There are no "goats" allowed...No critizism against the sheep, it is our thread to exchange and share fellowship in communion of the word of God, Jesus and other writers in a positive atmosphere of peace.
If one attack is posted, I will report to MD!
So come on in through the "Sheeps Gate" and let's flock together wade by the peaceful waters to bring much knowledge, questions and wonderful topics.

Good idea Angel - I go to an Orthodox Shul - not extreme and rigid. The Rabbi is a young guy - also a Dr of Psychology - very cool man. Today he had a friend of his - a Muslim man, moderate of course, as his guest. Before evening services the Rabbi has a "tish" which is an informal discussion that he will lead and his friend will be there. Most do not know that approx 20% of Israelis are Muslim. SO I will go this evening because I know that Rabbi Neuman will have some reason for inviting his guest to spend Sabbath with him! He is one of the few Religious men that I find to be spiritually fit - he has helped me find a home in Judaism!

I found this great site on "Priestly Garmets"; how they are made from the wool being spun and dyed. The O.T. (Torah) is interesting on the garmets they wore and the meaning of the features to the garmets.

Orthodox Shul Hey iam what is that? I am sorry but I don't know anything about this. Could you fill me in?
Angel I want to play too. Glad to have one spot away from the fray.
May God ever be praised and may He receive all the glory that is due Him. From His people and from His son Jesus.

I hate to use the term, but it applies here. I have ignorance to whether the Torah and the OT are exactly the same thing. Are they? And if not, what are the differences?

That is a very good question kjac, I know "Iam" is more an expert on the Torah scroll. I only know that the similaries are the first 5 books (the Law), are the Torah and written in only Hebrew. Some of the books in the Torah are combined as one single book, such as Samuel, Kings and Chronicles. The Jewish still 'til this day write replacement Torah's like they did way back when; line for line, perfectly.
The O.T. contains the 5 books of Moses, like the Torah, but are not written on scrolls and was translated from Hebrew into Greek and onto other worldy languages. The O.T. also contains the other books that the Torah does not like the lesser prophets. Samuel, Kings and Chronicles are individual books in the O.T.

kjac - the OT is a loosly translated version of the Torah = the Torah also includes other volumes. Even the Psalms are loosely translated as Non Jews read them.

Thanks iam, Angel. I'm trying to do some other research right now (NBA draft ), but would love to find out more about the Torah. It doesn't sound like something that would be available in the local bookstore though. Any suggestions?

In this safe place I will share some of my religion. I thought you all may enjoy the service that I just returned from.
On Saturday night as the sun goes down Jews do the Havdalah (separation) service - to signify the end of the Sabbath - the Holy Day and the beginning of the week! THe Sabbath is not only a day of Rest - it is a Day to be one with God - PS - Jews believe that the day begins at sunset! It is my favorite ceremony of all!!!
The Havdalah service consists of the lighting of a twisted candle - The lighted candle symbolizes the light of Shabbat and the strands of the braid have been interpreted as the many types of Jews in the world, all of whom are part of one unified people.
The drinking of a cup of wine - The wine is, as always, a symbol of joy. We take one last sip of the joy of Shabbat as we bid the sabbath goodbye for another week. There is a special blessing for the wine at Havdalah - Behold, God is my unfailing help; I will trust in God and will not be afraid. The Lord is my strength and song; God is my Deliverer. With joy shall you draw water out of the wells of salvation. The Lord alone is our help; May God bless our people. The Lord of the universe is with us; The God of Jacob is our protection. (Those present respond) There was light and joy, gladness and honor for the Jewish people. So may we be blessed. (Leader repeats and then continues. Lift the kiddish cup here.) I will lift the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of the Lord.
And the burning of spices - the sweet-smelling spices symbolize the sweetness of Shabbat, whose pleasant aroma we breath in one last time that it might last us through the week to come until we can welcome Shabbat again.
And the Blessing for Havdalah!! Blessed are You, Lord our God, ruler of the world, who separates the holy from the mundane, light from darkness, Israel from the other peoples, the seventh day of rest from the six days of work. Blesed are You, Lord, who separates the holy from the mundane.

How about the temples, like the first temple of Solomon. There were many gates. I heard of the Sheep Gate, and the Fish Gate, there are others, but can't remember them.
