Yash, but I can't hear the words "To thine own self be true" without thinking of that episode of Gilligan's Island when the castaways made a musical of Hamlet.
Don't feel bad.I was just thinking of a Star Trek character,Zefram Cochrane,inventor of warp drive who's big quote was,"Don't worry about being a great man,just be a man and let history makes it's own judgement."

How about a nice poem?
Invictus OUT of the night that covers me, Black as the Pit from pole to pole, I thank whatever gods may be For my unconquerable soul. In the fell clutch of circumstance I have not winced nor cried aloud. Under the bludgeonings of chance My head is bloody, but unbowed. Beyond this place of wrath and tears Looms but the Horror of the shade, And yet the menace of the years Finds, and shall find, me unafraid. It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul.
---William Ernest Henley

Thanks mom! I have one too that I wrote years ago:
~ Thousand Eyes ~
They all became a dagger
Forcing me to the cutting edge;
Those piercing thousand eyes
Searching eagerly & quickly;
Gentle vision came to rescue
Then I became a thousand two- ~ Angel ~

To Thine Own Self Be True
Yet here, Laertes! Aboard, aboard for shame! The wind sits in the shoulder of your sail, And you are stay'd for. There ... my blessing with thee! And these few precepts in thy memory Look thou character. Give thy thoughts no tongue, Nor any unproportion'd thought his act. Be thou familiar, but by no means vulgar. Those friends thou hast, and their adoption tried, Grapple them to thy soul with hoops of steel; But do not dull thy palm with entertainment Of each new-hatch'd, unfledg’d comrade. Beware Of entrance to a quarrel but, being in, Bear't that th' opposed may beware of thee. Give every man thy ear, but few thy voice; Take each man's censure, but reserve thy judgement. Costly thy habit as thy purse can buy, But not express'd in fancy; rich, not gaudy; For the apparel oft proclaims the man; And they in France of the best rank and station Are of a most select and generous chief in that. Neither a borrower, nor a lender be; For loan oft loses both itself and friend, And borrowing dulls the edge of husbandry. This above all: to thine own self be true, And it must follow, as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man. Farewell; my blessing season this in thee!

From Hamlet...who in order to be true to himself, had to be false to every man...feigning madness to bring revenge on his father's murderer.

There are unfortunate folks who have little or no insight into themselves and so they have a distorted self image. Thats similar to using a broken cracked mirror or the mirrors in a crazy house. They have no real way to see themselves other than to rely on some external source likely another individual who may also be damaged. Dysfunctional relationships are like this. Relationships between the hyper-religious are worse since their view on reality is very distorted.

There are unfortunate folks who have little or no insight into themselves and so they have a distorted self image. You shouldn't talk about things that you don't understand. It makes you look foolish. And is what you say can have any authenticity then again you need a mirror and you will see exactly what you describe.

And thats a demonstration of such an individual who inspired me to write this:
There once was a troll who would post. His mind was nothing but toast.
He came out of nowhere, went just to fart. Only to break wind, and have us depart.

Don't we all need to accept as the first premise: "If you do not get it from self, where ever will you find it? Ultimately we get all from our internal selves. We use our senses and trained minds to judge, process and react to all sensory input. A mind is only a reflection of external reality and so it must be still and quiet like the reflection of the moon on a still pond. Any disturbance to the pond will distort the image just as a disturbed mind distorts reality.
