THE Pope has issued a dire warning about the state of religion in Australia, saying mainstream Christianity is dying more quickly here than in any other country.

In remarks to priests in Italy, Pope Benedict spoke of a crisis for the main Christian churches as people in the Western world felt self-sufficient, with less need for Christ and Christianity.

"Certainly this is a suffering linked to the present historical moment in which generally one sees that the so-called mainstream churches appear moribund," he said. "This is so in Australia above all and also in Europe but not so much in the United States." He said the Catholic Church was not as badly off as the mainstream Protestant churches, which were in a "profound crisis" because of sects.

Many people felt Christianity was antiquated, he said.

In a nutshell, that assertion is toss. Christianity is declining rather than rising, while 'new age' beliefs are massively on the rise.

In the UK Between 1979 and 2005, half of all Christians stopped going to church on a Sunday...and all indicators show a continued secularisation of British society in line with other European countries such as France.

"The proportion of the [American] population that can be classified as Christian has declined from 86% in 1990 to 77% in 2001."
76.5% (159 million) of Americans identify themselves as Christian. This is a major slide from 86.2% in 1990. Identification with Christianity has suffered a loss of 9.7 percentage points in 11 years -- about 0.9 percentage points per year. This decline is identical to that observed in Canada between 1981 and 2001. If this trend is continued, then:
-at the present time (2007-MAY), only 71% of American adults consider themselves Christians
-The percentage will dip below 70% in 2008
-By about the year 2042, non-Christians will outnumber the Christians in the U.S.

While it is true that christianity is on the rise in developing nations, in the West it is dying. What do you think about that?

Census shows Christianity on decline
Dec 25, 2006 9:51 PM

The latest census figures show the number of people who say they have no religion is significantly growing in New Zealand.

If the current trend continues, New Zealand could officially become a majority non-christian nation by the next census.

The latest census figures show that over a quarter of a million more Kiwis now consider themselves to have no religion than did in the previous census, which equates to one in three New Zealanders.

However for many, Christmas too has less religion.

"I was really amused to hear from one of our cathedral regulars that they were on a bus and overheard a couple of people talking about and really complaining about the church interferring in Christmas," said Peter Beck of the Anglican Cathedral.

Census figures from 2006 show 32% of New Zealanders now consider themselves to have no religion. The number of christians dropped 5% to 2.1 million.

lois,

you may wish to consider the statistics for the USA. If so many people are christians and allegally attend church, then there would be a church on every street in the USA.

Also, you may wish to consider, ALL 1st world countries are declining on Christianity whereas christianity is gaining strength by feeding off third world countries.

Lois, yes, Christian organizations really do try to pull the wool over the sheeples eyes.

According to their statistics we have a church on every corner street crowded with Christians.

louis: What an ignorant statement.

... Ignorance and wishful thinking does not make the thread title a fact, but to the contrary of "absolute truth", it is a lie and representative of the OP's ideology, his claim to fame of knowing the truth.

Christian Population Growth Rate Higher than World; Less than Muslims, Hindus

Major Religions of the World Ranked by Number of Adherents

Largest Religious Groups in the United States of America

...In actuality, during the first 1400 years or so from conception, the Christian populous actually remained rather stable, but has grown ever since. Even if the percentage by world populous had no growth at all, by the population growth itself, Christianity would still increase.

Hammertime: Jesus did also speak of men to do their own castrations.

...As most of Jesus's teachings, it was a parable, a metaphor and not an actual happening, but in relevance to abstention from marriage, from fornication and married to God, such as the personal commitment by priests and Nuns.

...How does one conclude this, rather than to read as an abstract meaning? Because almost all if his teachings were parables and the translation from Hebrew to English will sometimes lose the meaning in perfect sense by the English language.

...Simply ask a Hebrew speaking Jew to translate any misunderstandings from the original writings, as although they do not conclude Jesus as a Messiah, they still believe him to be a prophet, as do the Muslims.

Here is an example for you, from your own profile...

Hammertime's profile: 'm also extensively trained in marital arts and taught for over 20 years.

...Now, are you a trained expert in the art of marriage, or in the art of self defense without modern weapons? Now, I understand English quite well and I know what you are talking about, but someone that does not speak English is going to presume you are a marriage counselor.

So provide some truth for us

SG:
Christian Population Growth Rate Higher than World; Less than Muslims, Hindus

Quoted from a Christian source so what would you expect (The world Christian population continues to grow, but at a slower rate than Hinduism and Islam, according to statistics from a U.K.-based research institute. By Jennifer Riley {email address removed} )

Major Religions of the World Ranked by Number of Adherents

Doesnt show anything but stats

Largest Religious Groups in the United States of America

Again, only stats that does not show any proofs of attendance over time.

...In actuality, during the first 1400 years or so from conception, the Christian populous actually remained rather stable, but has grown ever since. Even if the percentage by world populous had no growth at all, by the population growth itself, Christianity would still increase.

Proofs????

Your contribution... nada, zip, zilch!

Knots: Again, only stats that does not show any proofs of attendance over time.

...Actually Steve, you made the statement that "Christianity has no choice but to fade out," so you provide the proof, the facts to back it up, or are there Buddhist hypocrites as well? ... Oh yea, there are.

...Here is another little clue for you... If you were so positive that Buddhism was the "right religion," you would have no need to put other religions down in the attempt to make your ideology, your perception appear to be better. Doing so, shows a little lack of personal confidence...

...Besides, come on man, who in their right mind prostrates to some fat fcuk bronzed statue, that most of us use as a door stop, and concludes the resemblance as some supreme entity?

I think it's mostly a Zen thing...but SG, when you genuflect in church, are you bowing to the statue or what it represents?

(I was studying tai chi, and normally bowed on entering the dojo, to my teacher, and to the flag...it's more about being mindful of what is valuable than it is worship)

Of course I'm extensively trained in the marital arts. Thats why I'm single and happy.. If I was married I'd have to be trained in martial arts.

As for Jesus castrating men metaphorically. Its not only him that speaks in parables but the whole bible is a collection of books written allegorically and metaphorically where any fantasy and be found and any horror justified. As for Jesus raising the dead, that too is a metaphor. Coming back from the dead is another metaphor. His very existence a myth. If Christians are willing to delude themselves believing into fables, allegories and metaphor as literal fact then being castrated is the least of their problems. Well, not the least, thats a serious problem but its the metaphorical lobotomy that they should be worrying about.

..."Genuflect?" Geez Sis, where is the dictionary for that one?

...Alright, the one knee deal for "genuflect" is practiced by mostly Catholics, but I don't know of any Protestants that do.
