The Cookie Thief by Valerie Cox
A woman was waiting at an airport one night, With several long hours before her flight. She hunted for a book in the airport shops. Bought a bag of cookies and found a place to drop.
She was engrossed in her book but happened to see, That the man sitting beside her, as bold as could be. Grabbed a cookie or two from the bag in between, Which she tried to ignore to avoid a scene.
So she munched the cookies and watched the clock, As the gutsy cookie thief diminished her stock. She was getting more irritated as the minutes ticked by, Thinking, "If I wasn't so nice, I would blacken his eye."
With each cookie she took, he took one too, When only one was left, she wondered what he would do. With a smile on his face, and a nervous laugh, He took the last cookie and broke it in half.
He offered her half, as he ate the other, She snatched it from him and thought... oooh, brother. This guy has some nerve and he's also rude, Why he didn't even show any gratitude!
She had never known when she had been so galled, And sighed with relief when her flight was called. She gathered her belongings and headed to the gate, Refusing to look back at the thieving ingrate.
She boarded the plane, and sank in her seat, Then she sought her book, which was almost complete. As she reached in her baggage, she gasped with surprise, There was her bag of cookies, in front of her eyes.
If mine are here, she moaned in despair, The others were his, and he tried to share. Too late to apologize, she realized with grief, That she was the rude one, the ingrate, the thief.
How many times in our lives, have we absolutely known that something was a certain way, only to discover later that what we believed to be true ... was not? I believe this poem delivers a very strong message about how we can be absolute sure that we know the truth, yet can be utterly wrong. I'm sure that during our life time all of us have had similar experiences.
This was the message that Jesus was giving when he warned us about judging others, in this case the woman was actually judging herself without even realizing it.
The man however did not judge but placed himself in her place and decided to share instead of judging her actions as being wrong.
Take a look within yourselves and truthfully determine which of these people would reflect your reactions if you were in a similar situation.
I would have to admit that I have found myself in similar situations, and it seems that my mood at the time caused my reactions to vary. Now I try to think of this poem anytime I find myself in situations where I feel that I absolutely know that I am right (making a judgement), and take time to communicate instead of making a rash judgement.
What are your thoughts on this?
Peace

I probably would have slapped his hand out of my cookies or moved the bag to the other side of me, but yes, I get the point of the story.
I have many times over made assumptions about a person or situation, thinking I was correct. All I really succeeded in was being arrogant and I've even lost a dear friend at one time over it. Not an easy way to learn the lesson, but it has definitely been learned. Judgement won't get you anywhere. Judge not!

It turns out the man who was being blamed was the person who had the most charity. He could have yelled at her and been right but the lady would have believed he was not only stealing but being a liar too. That is the foundation of religious wars. But something happened to the woman to make her realize she was wrong. How often does that happen? Sometimes never. So the religious righteous go on their merry ways for their whole lives without ever knowing the truth.
The problem with some religious systems is that they do not turn inward to learn the nature of self, themselves. They turn outward externally abandoning their true natures and even condemning it. They allow their egos to drive their perceptions, feeling full when being empty. Real hell is when you think you're in heaven because you've gotten used to it..It reminds me of a joke...
There was the guy who died and found himself in this big giant pool of ....ehhh feces. Tons of it filling whole pool and he was in it with his just his head above it all. It stinks like hell. He is in hell. He says to the guy next to him, "Buddy, its not so bad. I can get used to this. Its kind of warm and soft and you do get used to the smell after a while". About 10 minutes later the devil walks in and tells everyone, "OK, break's over. Back on your heads".

"Who stole the cookie from the cookie jar? (Culprit) stole the cookie from the cookie jar. Who me? Yes, you! Couldn't be! Then who?"

I had a cooked thief in my home once. Not sure which one did it but come the day of vacuuming, I'd lift up the chair cushion and behold! Kebler Elfwich chocolate cookies! The thief never fessed up!

What are your thoughts on this? Many times we have situations in life that we blame on others when it is actually our own fault.
Some people go through their entire lives like this. "It's not my fault".

Great story.
It is an excellent message there for the insuffrerably self-righteous who make a habit of denouncing other people.
