Don't you even read the things I post Sail_Dancer?
After I posted Matthew 6:6, Jesus speaking,
"Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you."
If you had read that particular verse, spoken by Jesus; I am not able to understand how in your following post you could write,
"Prayer is putting yourself in a state where you are at one with god. Not to ask favors but to be awakened to things you currently are ignorant about."
I completely agree with you in that getting things for ourselves is not the central purpose of prayer.
But prayer is the means through which we communicate with our heavenly Father in a more structured manner.
We agree that He knows what we need even before we ask,
But God takes delight in prayer. Proverbs 15:8--
"The Lord detests the sacrifice of the wicked, but the prayer of the upright pleases Him."

He enjoys hearing from us when we are filled with praise + thanksgiving.

Beginning in 1Thessalonians 5:16--
"Be joyful always; 17--pray continually; 18--give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus."

SOC,

Reread my posts. I have already answered your questions.

I tried my best to explain why christians misuse prayer. In doing so I asked you a number of questions which you have yet to answer.

Peace

"Pray for those who persecute you".
(From Matt. 5:44.)
I believe this is of similar meaning to Proverbs 25, beginning in verse 21--
"If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat; if he is thirsty, give him water to drink. 22--In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head, and the Lord will reward you."
And again this is used in Romans 13. Beginning in verse 9,
"Love must be sincere: Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. 10--Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honour one another above yourselves. 11--Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. 12--Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. 13--Share with God's people who are in need. Practice hospitality. 14--Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. 15--Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. 16--Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited. 17--Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody. 18--If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. 19--Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: 'It is mine to avenge; I will repay', (Deut. 32:35) says the Lord. 20--On the contrary: 'If your enemy is hungry, feed him: if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.' (Proverbs 25:21, 22) 21--Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good."

So I believe that the verse you quoted advises us to overcome evil with good. This is often an extremely difficult thing to do. The walk of a spirit-filled, obedient Christian is not a simple one. (As some would have you believe.)

SOC,

"If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat; if he is thirsty, give him water to drink. 22--In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head, and the Lord will reward you."
I'm sure all your nonchristian friends appreciate the fact that everytime you treat them as friends, you are heaping burning coals on their heads and by doing so you are receiving rewards from your God.

With friends like you, who needs enemies!

I can't stop laughing!

Peace

Sail_Dancer, why do you laugh like a silly man? Evidently you do not understand what you are laughing about?

I'm not the one trying to show you up here.

A person who is an un-Believer is not my enemy. I have many un-Believing friends.

I believe that here we are being told that when we are kind to people who are not nice to us, we cause them to feel extremely uncomfortable. Primarily because they feel pretty bad about being treated nicely by someone they haven't been nice to.

Actually hammer, the fiery coals goes back to the origins of the tabernacle. The coals were set on the altar before the Holy of Holies as the guilt offering for the repenance of the people from their sins. There's much more I could expand, but have to go to work.

Can you expand on the part where the coals get thrown on their heads? I'm guessing this was an inspiration to Inquisition torture. Coals were used a lot.

Sorry hammer...I didn't view your post until now. The fiery coals on the head is just a metaphor; it's the meaning of the metaphor that brings the understanding. In this particular scripture where it was used, the meaning represents the burning of the mind to it's purest form of goodness from it's corrupted form of sin or bad doings if you will.

The metaphor justifies the action of unrighteousness and therefore guilt becomes the burning fire of the mind, thus the healing processing is kindling. Like I mentioned previously about the fiery coals on the altar before the veil of the holy of holies in the tabernacle that the high Levi priest offers to God for the guilty in remission of sins of the Hebrew Israelites.
