All the great Masters taught that the causes of happiness and the causes of suffering are within ourselves.
Yet, so many peoples forget this and in their bad times ask questions like... "why is it happening to me?" In their good times they forget or thank God for their happiness.
In truth, no matter who you are or what you believe we are the cause of our own happiness and our own suffering.
May it be karma, "as you sow so shall ye reap" and I dare say other belief systems have their own statements.
What are you thoughts on this "truth?"

I have come to discover that the source of all that I experience truly does lie within me.
It has been when I have relied on others for happiness or tried to blame my sorrow on others, that I have lived my darkest hours.
We are in control.

We are responsible for ourselves but are aren't responsible for what others do. We can only respond to others but we can't control them so there are limits to the causes in motion around us. Perhaps we can influence in a good way.
We can be happy within ourselves but personally I can not feel completely happy knowing others are suffering. Just knowing there are others feeling pain makes me unhappy. I think the best we can do is have moments we can enjoy and to make ourselves comfortable. If I can do something, anything to ease suffering of another, I would feel a little more happy but there is little we can to to ease someone's suffering if that is what they choose for themselves.
I think balance is the key. We can't walk around in every moment being happy. Only a psychopath can do that. Our emotions are fluid and change with our thoughts and with our interactions. We should eliminate unnecessary negative thoughts but we can't eliminate all negative thoughts until the world itself becomes a utopia. But we can be balanced and that is the single most thing that will influence all other things. How do we do that? By eliminating, not adding, what is unnecessary, useless, and toxic. We have everything we need already. We just need to set it free.

We are responsible for ourselves Hammer But others......... Controlled by their fears. It is where religiosity has control.
Relieve their suffering is often a very difficult thing to do.
If I can do something, anything to ease suffering of another, I would feel a little more happy but there is little we can to to ease someone's suffering if that is what they choose for themselves.
Sometimes they need a swift awakening call.... How else will they know? Unless it comes to them over a vast period of time.

We are responsible for our choices. The Greatest choice of all is do I honor my lord and Savior or not.

All the great Masters taught that the causes of happiness and the causes of suffering are within ourselves. Jesus never talked about happiness. He spoke of joy, the joy of the salvation of God. That would supersede any happiness ever conceived by any man.

Causes of happiness and the causes of suffering have nothing what-so-ever to do with any God, Gods, or Jesus.
Jesus never taught happiness and look at the results....
But tell me something, please: Why do so many Christians struggle to find that joy? Where is their peace? Why are they so discouraged? Why are they so sad?
How do I know that many Christians are sad? Here is one way that you can see the problem for yourself. Fire up your search engine and search for "sad discouraged depressed Christians." What do you find? As I write this I find 576,000 sites.[1 ] Sure, not all of those sites are relevant, but most of the top sites are. They are written by Christians to help sad, depressed Christians. Why are all of these people trying to help discouraged Christians? It seems that there is a problem. There must be many thousands of sad, depressed Christians out there.

It's it a wonder so many anti-depressants are being sold every day. And scientists keep coming up with new ones.

When I read the OP the word 'perspective' came to mind Then I remembered the analogy of the 'higher self' or more precisely perhaps ? the 'Rigpa' which is like an astronaut looking down on the earth Rhe earth could be used to represent our 'conditioned selves' or perhaps the term 'sem' could be used since ,,,,,,if we are indeed all 'entangled into a 'Oneness' then the word 'self' might be misleading
I personally know of this common sense concept re 'perception' and how it colors our reality But if I don't expose myself to reminders I forget
Thanx Knots for the reminder
