The Jerusalem Syndrome

Dr Pesach Lichtenberg, an Israeli psychiatrist living in Jerusalem explain this mental illness and its prevalence in religious fanatics who visit Jerusalem. I first heard about this on NPR while driving. I laughed so hard I could have gotten into a car crash. I just barely contained myself. When I got home I found the link to the interview.

Here is his audio interview with NPR.
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=17563868
Sometimes the sights and sounds of Jerusalem can overwhelm believers and trigger psychotic episodes. Israeli psychiatrist Pesach Lichtenberg says that he has seen visitors and residents overcome with the belief they have a messianic mission.
From Wiki
During a period of 13 years (1980-1993) for which admissions to the Kfar Shaul Mental Health Centre in Jerusalem were analysed, it was reported that 1,200 tourists with severe, Jerusalem-themed mental problems were referred to this clinic. Of these, 470 were admitted to hospital. On average, 100 such tourists have been seen annually, 40 of them requiring admission to hospital.

So for you Christian fanatic lunatics having hallucinations at home. Perhaps you might want to plan a trip to Jerusalem and have a psychotic episode in the holy land.

Just thinking if Dr Lichtenberg might want to visit the Bible Belt in the US and determine how the levels of psychosis compare to Israel. When he's done he might want to stop off for a visit in Canada too.

Absolutely. Resurrection is a common motif in almost all cultures. Its all the cycles in the day, the year and the seasons. Unfortunately when people die, they stay dead, unless you got some of that Jerusalem Syndrome going on and fantasize about some religious mission with the dead rising up from their graves.....

Jerusalem Syndrome is not a hoax. Its a real mental disease that affects religious nutters.

Those of the "Beatle Mania" era would say the same thing.

Is that because John Lennon once said the Beatles were more popular than Jesus? Is that why a born again Christian murdered him?

Hammer,

What is the difference between "Medically Documented Religious Mental Illness" and "Medically Documented Miracles"?

Hope the MOD doesn't mistakenly delete this thread as a duplicate subject thread.

Peace

Well I believe the people affected by the syndrome described in this thread would be contributors of unsubstantiated bogus claims in the later.

Thank God your not a physician!

Dr. Yair Bar-El at Kfar Shaul Hospital in Jerusalem says it is a temporary disorder, not a DISEASE! And he never said they were religous nutters! Geez hammer your imagination runs amuck! Read your own orignal thread and then do adaquate research!

Not all tourists are religious

Right.... Like God is Evil and should be banned from humanity.

Personal insults on God arent insults. They are a true observation of the facts.

Religiosity is toxic and degrades society.
