Is the Bible Gods Word?
It is a good question. One of the best.

Is the bible the infallible absolute word of God?

That is an inflamatory subject.

I know it is cheesy, and I hat it when people do it to me, but I want to answer the question with a question.

Which is: who wrote the bible?

I know, I know, "divinely inspired", yada, yada, yada, that is not the question.

Who actually put pen to paper and formed the worlds and sentences?

Men, Regular ole men. Not Yeashua, not God, but regular, plain ole men, that sin, lie, and make mistakes.

Well they didn't make mistakes when doing the bible right? Well, if you are openminded I can prove that, God-man-bible-man is an imperfect chain of communication.

Have you ever heard the bible story about the guy who survived in the desert on honey and locusts?

Honey sounds pretty good, but what about the locusts? Yick, right? That is because most people think it is talking about the bug. It is not. Over there, the "locust" is a fruit much like a pear.

One of my olod preacher's came back from a visit to the holy land and announced it in church. Side note: kudos to him for having the integrity to admit that he (like most over here) was incorrect. Many arrogant bible thumpers would try to tell you they knew all along because they are so afraid of showing any sort of weakness (I did not mention any h-words). People who can never show a weakness do not gain respect, they lose it because other folk figure out pretty fast that they are full of it. Am I wrong?

OK, back on point

God-man-bible-man is an imperfect chain of communication. Now comes the "Well, the bible authors didn't make the mistake, you made the mistake when you read it" Totally irrelevant. Both of the believers on each end of the bible are flawed humans. If one can make a mistake (and obviuosly they can) so can the the other.

Having said all that, I think the New Testament, written about Yeashua, some 60-80 years is some of the best that we have got as far as figuring out what God wants/expects from us.

That is what I try to follow.

One of the things, anyhow.

Others are my own reasoning. Hands down, God is a God of riddles and clues. He gives you a brain to figure it out. Another resource, I use, is going to close friends who I think are on the right track.

To my mind, that is how you find God.

Lance, I am neither theist or atheist. I dont see the Bible other than a nice set of past times stories.

I see no value in the bible whatsoever except to disprove those who make statements from the bible making wild and inaccurate claims.

Yes, I have read the bible, studied the bible for many years to the point I was going to go into the priesthood in my madness many many years ago. Those were the days when all religions seemed open in truth. However, the Buddhists had me.

The Bible is one mess of contradictions. It is a very unreliable source for truth. Having spent 30+ years into various religions, philosophies I have realized the truth resides within us and that the quickest pathway available for anyone to that truth is Buddhism. It is a living truth and demonstrates its truths. This thread isnt about Buddhism I know but my point is that what ever truth maybe held by the Bible it can certainly be found else way far more simply, truthfully and directly by ones own living experiences.

In the end it is we who have to find the truth and no reliance on deities, gods, super beings and such like. No one placed on this planet for them.

Well, anyone who won't admit the bible has contradictions, doesn't know it well.

Anyone who disagrees, ought to take the WHBQ

World's hardest bible quiz

Most of them are sort of vague and/or OT, but some are cut and dried and are NT.

How did Judas die again?

I do think, however, that much of the NT (and some of the OT) is accurate and divinely inspired.

If every bible on the planet suddenly vanished, and I was charged with recreating it from memory, I could probably recount many of the stories, and get the gist of the message across, but as a flawed person, I would, of course, make mistakes.

The thing is. God could have sent Yeashua to any time period. Wouldn't it be great to have a full DVD set of all Yeashua's sermons?

But God likes his riddles/mysteries. It is his way. We are left with trying piece as much of it together as we can.

The bible is an introduction to learning God for you.How you use it or if you use it at all is up to your individual self. Thats why many churches like my own have bible study groups.A place where everyone can read and interpret what it says to each other.
Personally I dont see the bible as Gods word entirely but the words of his children, they repeated for me.

On another thread you mentioned blind faith and I think,I may well be wrong ,you mentioned something about how it cant be proven that faith accomplished anything.
If it was you that mentioned that, what you have to remember about faith is that its a private thing.Just like God,its proven time and time again to those of us that have a great deal of it,that it does provide for us.
Us...as individuals.

I brought that up because the God I pray to is the same God that all we Christains pray to,but all we Christains arent me and how I interpret what men long ago wrote in scripture works just fine in my friendship with him.
Church fellowship is for sharing Gods word with each other using the Bible.
Personal fellowship with God makes God believable to me,not what the Bible says or anyone else for that matter.

Lance good thread

Just a helpful note for you; there are some bible contradiction threads already that have gone in deep discussions. Hope you find them interesting and maybe even answers to many of your questions:

What questions? I was making a point.

You are free to agree or disagree, but please don't position yourself as "He is this confused little person tryig to sort it all out, and it is up to people like me with a greater understanding to help him figure it out"

That is very condescending.

Lance,

I believe that ancient philosophers expessed their theories through fables and myths. These myths were eventually written down to assure that their messages would not be lost to future generations of man.

The myths were never meant to be considered truth. Their importance was in their message.

You posted:
Having said all that, I think the New Testament, written about Yeashua, some 60-80 years is some of the best that we have got as far as figuring out what God wants/expects from us.

I don't necessarily agree with you but will not judge your theory since no one has enough information to prove or disprove theories like this.

I cannot believe that god would purposely hide facts that he exists. He may provide riddles and clues that based on the evolution of our minds and our growing wisdom would reveal mysteries to us when we are ready to benefit from them.

Since the OT & NT both fail to substantiate god's existence, I question that the scripture has any connection to a god as Abrahamic religions picture him.

My opinion is that philosophers purposely wrote their myths in such a way as to deliver their message while clearly designing the stories in a way that readers would never mistake the story as truth. They were designed to teach morality, not to be taken as absolute truth. They were designed so that a person can learn from them, but the matured mind would know that in truth the stories were myths.

This concept is used all the time. Take the Santa Claus myth. It was designed to teach children by giving them a reason to be good. As the child grows, they may still believe in the myth, but they start to give family members presents. They learn that it is better to give that receive. But once the message is learned, it becomes obvious that Santa is just a myth to teach and give joy to mankind.

The bible is nothing more than that. Could Jesus have existed? Sure he could have. But the myths composed by his followers to spread his message, were design just as the Santa Claus myth was. When the true message is learned, the student's wisdom reveals the myth, the message and its purpose.

Jesus' followers were given the task of delivering his message, not starting a religion. Jesus and his followers realized that believing myths to be true could only inhibit mankind's understanding of the message. That is why all the bible stories were presented as they were. When the message becomes clear, the myth also becomes clear allowing for further growth. Belief in the myth causes stagnation. Realizing that the myth was just a story designed to teach a philosophy causes the student to continue their pursuit to find additional truths.

Those believing in the myth will never expand their knowlegde base. They will stagnate in the delusion created by the myth.

Peace

I pretty much rejected the bible as being the infallible word of God about 5 decades ago. I believe it was as divinely inspired as any of us are; I believe we're born with an innate ethic (what my old pal Greystone called the Primethic) that pretty much boils down to the Golden Rule - do unto others as you would want done to you - if you want mercy, be merciful; if you want love, be loving; if you want respect, be respectful. I've tried (and am still trying, not always successfully) to live my life that way, and to be grateful for all that I've been given, and not take it for granted. Taking it for granted would mean not being mindful of all that's around me, whether I like it or not, then choose what I want to be a part of me and reject the rest. I think our creator gave us what we need to live by, that primethic, and after that we're on our own. If there's life beyond this, or reincarnation, is pretty much beside the point...I don't think anything's promised to us and I also think if there are more experiences beyond the life we're living, the point would still be to fully experience each stage as much as possible...just me being logical. If I have the ability to think, to feel, to love, to question, even to hate and feel anger - I need to do these things, to understand them and either accept or reject them.

I don't think I need a bible, or even any particular structure for this - it just makes sense to me, intellectually and at a deeper, more visceral (i.e. gut instinct) level. I've spent most of my life solving logic problems, and I've always found that when it 'feels right' it IS right...and this feels right to me. I also believe that my 'right' answer may not fit someone else...we all interpret based on both nature and nurture. Various men produced what we read in the bible based on their interpretation - some I agree with, some I reject totally. Those were different times with different customs - it may have been true then but I don't think we're about to start stoning adulterers, or even rebellious children, to death these days.

The fellowship provided by a church of synagogue is great, but I can find it elsewhere too - for me, it's work; after I retire I'll look somewhere else, but it would probably be something like Universal Unitarianism.

Angel honest answers are not always welcome here. I have never found A receptive ear to anything worth talking about from the poster. I pretty much have washed my hands of even trying to have a conversation with him with all the personal attacks that have been thrown my way from him. Truth stands for all to see if they only will put their pride aside. God bless you sis.

THE BIBLE IS GODS WORD. BELIEVE IT OR DONT BELIEVE IT. THE CHOICE IS YOURS ALONG WITH PRICES AND REWARDS.

WE ARE TOLD NOT TO ADD TO IT OR TAKE AWAY FROM IT LEST WE BE MADE TO LOOK A FOOL.

Hunt, so you're saying the Bible belongs in Ripley's museum.... I think every carnival freak show should have one too. You never know when an Elmer Gantry side show is going to be needed.

While people are search for bible contradictions they often miss the biggest item it contradicts --- REALITY....

No problem. Some of the "always on the attack" sort made have me a little defensive.

Speak of the devil.....

Not true. A lot of people disagree with me, but mostly, I have been treated fairly respectfully. You can't make a habit of disrespcting others, then whine if they don't show you any. Well, you can (and do) but no one will take you seriously.

What sarcasm?

I have never beat around a bush.

You are about as pretentious and phony as they come. You have behaved llike a total arrogant jerk ever since I have been on here.

Is that clear and non-sarcastic enough for you?

Have you ever wondered why no one on here likes you? Here's a clue for you. It isn't because you are a "poor persecuted little lamb of God" as you would like to think.

It is because of the way you treat people.

No one is going to like you as long as you continue to act like a jerk all the time.

Your Jesus is dead. Crucified. But only if he actually existed. Meanwhile your blind faith is just another form of entertainment for me. Unfortunately for others, your rants are upsetting. My advice to them is to just:
