Do Mediums have a genuine gift?

If not, then how can it be explained that so many know information about passed relatives/friends etc?
I accompanied my mother to see a medium a few years ago, I gave only my first name on the telephone when I made the booking, no address nothing. This was the mediums wish as she did not want to be accused of researching.
I had an open mind, but went along because my mother had always wanted to have a session with one, and I made sure I chose a renowned medium that we had to wait months to see because of her populrity and expertice.
The medium named my past relatives first time, no 2 or three until she got the right one, her dates of events were astoundingly accurate and she described my relatives so accurately. She even described my Grandfathers condition when he died, which was an unusual one and not a common occurrance.
She told my Mother that her father had been one of 3, my mother told her no, he was only of 2, but the lady was adamant and didnt back down insisting that my Grandfather also had a younger brother.
She also told me that I would have 2 girls, the first I would name Mary, which was odd, because I didnt particularly like the name, she also said that the 12th of the 12th was significant.
When we got home, my mother checked her old birth certificates she had of the family in an old box she kept hidden away that had belonged to my Grandfather, there in the bottom was the birth and death certificates of my grandfathers brother. He died as a child, which explained why my mother did not know of his existance.
When I could not have my own children, I adopted. I adopted 2 girls,
The eldest was Mary, and she was born on the 12th of December.
This was 2 years after the visit with the medium.
I did not choose Mary, she was proposed to us through the social services.
Was she genuine? or a clever fake?

If you need to ask then she was a cleaver fake else you'd know beyond a shadow of a doubt. Obviously you have doubts which is why you're asking....
How she did it only you would know. They are very good at finding out information using services and feeling you out. Often they send out shills to fish for information.

Thank you. Ive never heard of that before.
My Mother and I were the only other 2 in the room exept the medium, and I still wonder if she did all this through research.. HOW as she only ever had my first name.
Its not that I am a believer or a disbeliever, I am still at the... "How on earth did she do that?" stage.. I am still very open for a final decision.. hence my initial post.

I can understand how some kinds of people can "read" others, but when "facts" are thrown in, it's just plain eerie -- or maybe one of those "just IS" thangs.

You did call her, didn't you? She probably had Caller-ID. Once they have the phone number, the rest is easy especially if she had months to have her people do the research.
That doesn't account for Mary however!

I would say they do CHARLIgurl1,at least some are gifted while some are good con-artists.Look how people are gifted in memory that can recall what happened to them at any given time in any given year or those that can perform complex mathematical problems faster than a calculator.
I think everyone is gifted in something,not necessarily what your asking about here,but even a good con-artist has a gift.

Yes I agree knotts,
But, what I can say is.. the idea of getting my information via my number was not possible, I always have caller ID witheld.
She knew a great deal about my Grandfathers death, and it was an usual one, his surname was not my married name obviously, so even if she got my surname from somewhere this would not have helped her.
The cost of such research for the small fee she charged would not have been worth it.
The local Spriritualist church are Christian based, they sing hyms as normal as any other, but then a guest speaker/medium comes in, once again some of the accuracy is amazing.
They are either very talented frauds or they really do have this gift,
I think, like religeon, people will always demand proof before they believe enough to convert or accept..
