Isaiah 53:3-5 He was despised and rejected by men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that made us whole, and with his stripes we are healed.

Okay, here is one to discuss. Jesus took thirty-nine lashes on his back, so we could be healed. Now, I have heard that there are thirty nine broad categories of diseases or illnesses that man suffers. Thoughts?

By His Stripes

One night as I lay sleeping

I drifted far away,

To another time, another place

An entirely different day.

I looked up at this Jesus

As He hung upon the cross,

As to why all this was happening

I was surely at a loss.

What was God’s divine purpose,

For His suffering and His pain,

I questioned those around me

But no one could explain.

He had clearly done no wrong

Yet still He stood accused,

His body had been beaten

He was wounded, He was bruised.

As I looked up at the cross

A tear flowed from His eye,

He looked at me so lovingly

That I too began to cry.

“Do not weep for me dear child”

I heard my saviour say,

“This is not a time for sadness,

The hosts of heaven rejoice this day”.

“Because my father loves you so,

I give my life for you,

You really are so special

And my love for you so true"

"For your sin and your transgressions

The blood flows out from me,

Mine is the precious blood of life,

By which you are set free".

"When I rise from the tomb

My fathers plan for you is sealed,

For then you truly know,

That by my stripes, you are now healed".

"Yes by my stripes you are now healed,

Your healing is my grace revealed.

Your sin and your transgressions

Die with me upon the cross

No more the need to suffer death,

Nor pain, nor grief, nor loss".

"Accept my sacrifice dear one

And to my spirit yield

Then you will surely know my child,

By my stripes, you are healed".

I fell at the feet of my saviour,

His words burned deep within,

He allowed himself to suffer,

To cleanse me from my sin.

The king of glory, had been broken

That I could be made whole,

He had paid this dreadful price,

To save this sinners soul.

When I awoke next morning

I finally understood,

The cross my saviour died on,

Was made of grace, and not of wood.

There is no N.T. scripture told as to how many stripes Jesus received. Paul told about the stripes he received which 40 minus one:

2 Cor. 11:
24 Of the Jews five times received I forty stripes save one.

25 Thrice was I beaten with rods, once was I stoned, thrice I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day I have been in the deep.

In the O.T. laws of judgement, it tells no more than 40 stripes were to be given:

Deut. 25:
1 If there be a controversy between men, and they come unto judgment, that the judges may judge them; then they shall justify the righteous, and condemn the wicked.

2 And it shall be, if the wicked man be worthy to be beaten, that the judge shall cause him to lie down, and to be beaten before his face, according to his fault, by a certain number.

3 Forty stripes he may give him, and not exceed: lest, if he should exceed, and beat him above these with many stripes, then thy brother should seem vile unto thee.

The phrase "Forty Stripes Save One" was implemented in case of a miscount.

Scourging/Flogging was part of the crucifixtion execution process by the Romans. The Romans did not use flogging on their own citizens which this is written in the Lex Sempronia of 195 B.C.E. They used this practice on their slaves and humiliores.

Angel,

I think that the 39 lashes are also linked to Jesus' 39 recorded parables. That would be one lash for each of his teachings.

Peace

Sail,

39 years of age was the oldest a male could be if he was going to father a child that would be heir to a patriarchal family. The earliest he would be would be 36 years old, for then if he fathered a daughter, the waiting period required was three years until he tried again.

What have these to do with anything...40 years was the age of the patriarchal generations.

See a clue about the 40 years wandering in the desert?

There are thirty nine books in the Christian Old Testament.

Not in mine, not in the the Old Testament of Greek, Russian or Coptic Orthodox, nor the Anglicans which added back the Apochrypha. Indeed the original Protestant bible translations divided Kings into two books and Ezra and Nehemiah were considered two books.

The number of books in the Bible has been a great debate since the advent of Christendom. From Wiki:

The canonical Christian Bible was formally established by Bishop Cyril of Jerusalem in 350 and confirmed by the Council of Laodicea in 363, and later established by Athanasius of Alexandria in 367. The Council of Laodicea restricted readings in church to only the canonical books of the Old and New Testaments. The books listed were the 22 books of the Hebrew Bible plus the Book of Baruch and the Epistle of Jeremy, together with the New Testament containing 26 books, omitting the Book of Revelation.

The Council of Carthage, called the third by Denzinger,[12] on 28 August 397 issued a canon of the Bible restricted to: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, Josue, Judges, Ruth, 4 books of Kingdoms, 2 books of Paralipomenon, Job, Psalter of David, 5 books of Solomon, 12 books of Prophets, Isaias, Jeremias, Daniel, Ezechiel, Tobias, Judith, Esther, 2 books of Esdras, 2 books of Machabees, and in the New Testament: 4 books of Gospels, 1 book of Acts of the Apostles, 13 letters of the Apostle Paul, 1 of him to the Hebrews, 2 of Peter, 3 of John, 1 of James, 1 of Judas, and the Apocalypse of John.

There were changes after that including the elimination of the Apochrypha from some, but not all Protestant biles.

I like the apochrypha, east, but what you say is true, east. I read that, too before I made the post. Irregardless of that, we still wound up with thirty nine.

First and foremost, irregardless is not an actual word.

And who is we? It is not the broader we.

East,

I'd disregard anything to do with math when reading a post by Angel.

Protestant OT = 39

Douay/Catholic = 47

Greek Orthodox = 54

The Coptic and Ethiopian Orthodox have a few more than the Greek.

Only when it comes to calculating in BCE I guess.

Are you still standing on your original post concerning Moses and the papyrus?

Are you going to respond to my posts about your erroneous statement.
