Yes, I do enjoy learning about mental illnesses because so much of our culture is affected by it. Psychology, Abnormal Psychology were favorite courses among many in college. Those who suffer such illnesses can feel like they're in hell. I have personal friends who chose to become doctors and have known schizophrenics. Its nothing to joke about. As the years went on I began to realize that religion itself was a humongous source of mental illness. There are many accounts of psychosis, delusions and hallucinations. Read Acts and read Paul's road to Damascus, Revelations for examples. Christianity is rife with such examples. Religion, especially Christianity is a first amendment protected mental illness.

If someone was to say they spoke to Peter Rabbit you would think they are crazy but if they said Jesus spoke to them, you might think they were blessed. Thats why religion is one of the most interesting places to find mentally ill people who pretend nothing is wrong with them. That is also why Christians will not help other Christians suffering this disease. The key thing to is not that one has hallucinations and delusions, its a matter of having the right hallucinations and delusions.

Continued.....

There is a new branch of brain science called neurotheology that is a specific study about how the brain processes religious experiences, alien abduction experiences, etc.
The temporal lobes are clearly important in religious and spiritual experiences. The amygdala and hippocampus have been shown to be particularly involved in the experience of visions, profound experiences, memory, and meditation. However, we feel that the temporal lobe must interact with many other parts of the brain to provide the full range of religious and spiritual experiences.
This is purely an experience within the brain with physically measured readings seen on brain scans. The personal relationship with Jesus, the loud thoughts, the voices are all in the head manufactured by strong desire to have them. Using magnetic fields to the head the same experience can be reproduced in a lab.

Temporal Lobe Epilepsy, Neurotheology and Paranormal Experience

The first researcher to note and catalog the abnormal experiences associated with TLE was neurologist Norman Geschwind, who noted a constellation of symptoms, including hypergraphia, hyperreligiosity, fainting spells, mutism and pedantism, often collectively ascribed to a condition known as Geschwind syndrome.[1] Vilayanur S. Ramachandran explored the neural basis of the hyperreligiosity seen in TLE using galvanic skin response, which measures emotional arousal, to determine whether the hyperreligiosity seen in TLE was due to an overall enhanced emotional response, or if the enhancement was specfic to religious stimuli (Ramachandran and Blakeslee, 1998). By presenting subjects with neutral, sexually arousing and religious words while measuring GSR, Ramachandran was able to show that patients with TLE showed enhanced emotional responses to the religious words, diminished responses to the sexually charged words, and normal responses to the neutral words. These results suggest that the medial temporal lobe is specifcally involved in generating some of the emotional reactions associated with religious words, images and symbols.

UFO Researcher Albert Budden and cognitive neuroscience researcher Michael Persinger assert that increases in local electromagnetism, triggering the temporal lobe can stimulate TLE and trigger hallucinations of apparent paranormal phenomena, for example ghosts and UFO's. Persinger has even gone as far as to create a "God helmet" to apparently demonstrate how stimulation of the parietal and temporal lobe can evoke altered states of consciousness. Quite possibly, as neurotheologians have speculated, then, individuals with temporal lobe epilepsy, who have a natural aptitude for "religious" states of consciousness (such as euphoria or samadhi) have functioned in human history as religious figures or as shamans. Persinger's theories, however, remain controversial.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here is an interesting article called Imaging God? in Radiology Today to shed further light on this issue.

http://www.radiologytoday.net/archive/rt_042604p17.shtml

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

While the following study focuses mainly on those who claim alien abduction the experiences of being filled with the Holy Spirit are similar. All one has to do is replace the alien being with Jesus and then you get a full blown He is Risen personal relationship with Jesus experience.

There is a very interesting discussion the kinds of people predisposed to these kinds of experiences and about abnormal activity in the temporal lobes.

http://instruct1.cit.cornell.edu/Courses/psych113/Holden&French.pdf

Experiences were induced by applying magnetic fields directly to subject's heads. Also, many have claimed to have used magnets and crystals for their religious experiences. Others have used fasting and some have drug induced states. It should be noted that the military has also done experiments of this nature for mind control purposes.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The brain is the key focus on any discussion about religious experience and all experiences for that matter. These metaphors of "opening your heart to Jesus" is really all about manipulating your brain and modifying your brainwaves for the "religious experience".

There are many in these forums who claimed to have had "experiences" such as "talking in tongues", "loud thoughts" or "voices" or "conversations", "Holy Spirit", "He is real" and other such language, etc,etc... These people cause themselves addictive aberrations in brain activity resulting in grandiose delusions, auditory and sometimes visual hallucinations. Mental illness brought on by extreme religiosity.

Hammer-
even if some think certain Christians are nutso, there is only so much you can do over the computer.
Do I care that they (or anybody) are sick? Yes. I can speak my mind, and if that doesn't get across...it's time to move on to something I CAN do....

Well nutso is putting it mildly and I agree there isn't much we can do over the computer but there is a lot that can be done. There have been quite a few people who expressed things online they never would to friends or family. For some, its a cry for help. For others, its a way to express grandiose delusions without fear of embarrassment or reprisal because their identity is hidden. Sometimes people can reach out and save a life.

You are so full of internet junk, hammer, and if a medical thing comes up, suddenly you are a medical expert, whatever the situation calls for you can be.

If you can't refute or explain, you simply resort to lies and insults. By the way, you have to run psychological tests on people to determine mental illness.

I also know very few on here who hide their identity, YOU are one of them. I see no pictures of you on here, are you afraid? Sail has a fake picture, too. Knotts has no picture, either.

I have my full name and my picture on here. Most people at least have a picture.

I think the talking mule one suits you best, though.

Bama, you hit the nail on the head, though. HE is the one who needs help. At best he has a personality disorder.

I've posted some of the research above from your favorite doctor.,Andrew Newberg. Do you no longer like him? Was it something he's recently said?

Where did I post that said I was a medical expert? Didn't you go around telling lies about yourself, to yourself and telling everyone that you were a licensed psychologist when you haven't got even a freshmen level of knowledge in an area of your fantasy? This makes you a laughing stock and you don't seem to have the self respect to own up to it. You don't have the knowledge or experience of what entails what a real education.

You have posted here your religious delusions and hallucinations many times over. I'll post them again shortly. The bridge story, the hands pushing you, the voices and many other things. Your psychotic episodes might be explained by Temporal Epilepsy or perhaps a version of the Jerusalem Syndrome. There are many causes for these experiences my posts above explain.

Seriously, get to a psychiatrist and get on medication before you drive and kill someone. Its one that to have a freak show in your own home and church, its another to have those brain aberrations when you're driving.

I think the talking mule one suits you best, though.
Well, your a religious nut. You believe a mule actually spoke don't you? Its written in the Bible so it must be true. A man's ass spoke to him. In fact, he had a conversation with his ass. Don't you believe that? You must also believe there are unicorns too. You might want to talk to Jankia. He said unicorns were fictional but they are in Job 39:9, Psalm 92:10, Psalm 29:6, Numbers 24:8 to name a few.

Hammer, I never said that I was licensed by any but a Christian organization. For me that works the best of all. You can take that for what it is, or just drop it. You mkae so many false allegations that if you spoke the truth, no one would believe you.

Three Accounts of Delusions and Hallucinations

Please read carefully. These are actual accounts.
///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
I've written before of how, many years ago, in 1986, I experienced communion with God. The conversation took place on 3 consecutive nights while I lay in bed. These conversations took place in and around a prayer.
I was feeling desperate and very alone + filled with fear, as I lay in my bed in a bedroom on the ground floor of a drapeless 2-bedroom apartment. It was my first night alone in a body then unable to effectively deal with most interactions usually-necessary for a single adult in this society. I knew the basics of prayer. I just hadn't been the author of one in 10-15 years. I asked God to help me. And I asked Him to protect me. Those first 2 nights here, the prayer was really short. Then on the 3rd night, I began the prayer the usual way, but then something changed a little. I'm unable to accurately describe it, but something like the voice-of-conscience each of us has, sounded inside my head.
It was something else again. A little more intense. This Voice repeated my requests back to me. Then in a tone I could not ignore, I was assured of the granting of my requests.
-----------
To this day, I'm positive the discussion went something like this...
The voice, So you want healing....what are you willing to sacrifice to Me?
A quick check of my personal inventory revealed no livestock. Not much of anything really.
But my thoughts went to those things I most enjoyed in life.
It was a no-brainer: SEX.

=========================================================================

I had an OBE when I was 16. I was recovering from a bad case of flu when I suffered from Reyes Syndrome. It was early in the first widespread outbreak, so even doctors did not know much about it.I had a fever of 105.6 and it kept rising higher and higher.
A pretty detailed and feverish conversation with god to save the world while under the spell of a high fever.
During the OBE I stood before God, who did appear as a being of light. I was scared beyond belief. I said "God, I'm only sixteen. I am still young and there are so many things I want to do in my life. I want to get married, have children and grow old. If you will put me back in my body, I will do anything you say." He said, "Are you sure you mean anything?" I said, "Yes, God. I mean anything." He said, "You will save the world from evil." (I was Catholic at the time, so I was expecting Him to say something more like, "say 800 rosaries, or 1200 Hail Mary's" or something. I was also expecting to see St. Peter at the Pearly Gates. There was neither one present.) "I said what do you mean?" He said, "You will save the world from the Evil One, Satan." Before I could object, I was back in my body. Forty-five minutes had elapsed from the time I was pronounced dead until I opened my eyes and spoke. No, I was not dreaming or hallucinating. I was not only dead, but dead long enough for my body to go from raging with fever to already turning cold! In another fifteen minutes or so I would have started turning stiff!

=========================================================================

This morning I was thinking about the date I was planning for this week end, he was driving a great distance here and was going to stay in town. I was getting ready to pour my coffee and suddenly, it was like I was physically pushed backwards and I heard, "BACK OFF."

Lol, I love it, guess who was telling me that that one wasn't going to happen either to just back off.
Now, I know you guys will think I am hearing voices, am crazy, but I am not, and voices don't push you backwards, not enough to make me think I would fall, but enough to know that I was thinking about meeting the wrong man.

Hallucination while driving.
My daughter used to drive that bridge everyday, she will tell you that it was a miracle. Two lanes going opposite directions, no shoulder on the road, narrow, just enough room for two cars to pass. A big old boat car on one side going the other direction, me in my station wagon and a pickup pulling a boat going in between us.

Hmm, hammer, again, you only post PART of what was in that thread, read on.

Posts: 9,510 Sail, go read that. I have worked with the court systems in Texas, judges have sent juveniles to me for counseling.

I have been approached by the state prison system to work for them in a counseling postion.

I am liscensed to practice ANYWHERE in the whole country, not just Texas, I am not bound by state laws, I work in the capacity of a Christian counselor, but also am a liscensed clinical psychologist. I am also a liscensed pastoral counselor.

Now where in there do you see that I said I am licensed by the state? Come on, YOU are the Liar.

By the way, hammer, all, that is the end of that discussion, I am not going there again, and your posts to that will be ignored. Whether any credentials I might hold suit you or not, is of no concern to me. I am retired and not retained nor likely to be retained as YOUR counselor. So, it is of no importance.
