Anyone have any experience of Feng Shui?
I was looking into this last night, some of the methods seem pretty logical yet others need more thinking about. There is that area of commercialism too.

Commercialism supreme, at its finest. At least that is my take on it. Go green.

It is living in harmony with your environment. It really means wind and water. It really means to surround yourself with beauty, sympathy, kindess, music, life, nature, etc.
Now modern decorators, and I DO watch the home and garden channel, carry it just a little to exptremes, but then what do you expect.
Personally, I believe that harmony comes from INSIDE. Everyone wants to surround themselves with things that are pleasing to them, not necessarily water fountains in the house, but the trickling of those can be very relaxing. I have some small ones.

Actually I think it's more about letting life energy (chi) flow freely rather than blocking it. Can't say that I've ever tried applying it though but it might be worth a shot, if only to see if anything changes.

I also feel it was a money maker for some. I haven't read TOO much on it, as I found it simple in theory.
I enjoyed moving my sofa to the south wall, as it makes my living room bigger. If you aren't a morning person, and don't have to be...you may want to stay away from your bedroom windows facing east. Or get darkening blinds. I have moved my bed 3 times...where it is now gives the most walking space...I have 2 other choices, but they would mean partially blocking windows...that's common sense.
I just think it FEELS GOOD to make changes now and then!

With repect, I get the impression people dont really know what Feng Shui is and isnt.
Maybe because people are only seeing the "adverts" instead of the ideology which is over 6,000 years old.

It is living in harmony with your environment. It really means wind and water. It really means to surround yourself with beauty, sympathy, kindess, music, life, nature, etc. Isn't that the basic goal in creating a "home" (not just a "house")? ...as well as life.

I've read a few books and dabbled on this subject.
Basically, Feng Shui, simply said is the practice of placing or arranging objects and furniture within a space so that they create a friendly, peaceful and productive environment for the owner. The architecture and interior design is carefully considered by its structure, function and visual impact. Traditional Chinese thinking believe that all things living and non-living have "Chi" (it's pronounced chee). It's the life force in all matter - the cosmic breath - or energy. Feng Shui principals state that all "Chi" flows and has movement like water.
Keeping this in mind, the Chi around and within a structure will be affected by it's arrangement. The Chi itself is said to have five moods or "Elements" that help or hinder it's flow. They are EARTH, WOOD, FIRE, METAL and WATER. There are many objects and structures that fall under the five elements. In Feng Shui these elements are arranged carefully within rooms, as some mix well together, while others do not.
Most Feng Shui books have a section on the "Ba-Gua". This is a basic grid that looks like a blue print that is easily place over the floor plan of your own home. Each part of the Ba-Gua has a designated area for areas in your life which are career, knowledge, family, wealth, fame/reputation, marriage/commitment, children/creativity/future, helpful people, travel and lastly health.
To me Feng Shui is really a subtle psychology. For instance, you don't want to walk into your home/living room and have your couch's facing you as you walk in. It subliminally throws off an uninviting environment. The "Wall of Fame" location should be the wall that you see when you first walk into your home. Does it have your awards or degrees on it, or your favorite painting you painted, or the picture of you winning that pie contest?
Feng Shui has a lot of dynamics too many to list here. I think the best book to pick up on this subject that I've read so far is, "Move Your Stuff, Change Your Life". The author's first name is Karen but I can't seem to find it in my personal library right now. Try Amazon.com. (It get's loaned out a lot). It's a great book because it simplifies Feng Shui to the point where you can find/fix a problem in the area of your life by the grid and room. It's very step by step.
Which reminds me, I just moved into this place and should find that book.
Hope that sheds some light on this subject....Peace out .... :-p Meadowlark

ooops, I had a typo....on the couch section...Couches should always be "Facing the person" who walks into the room....not away from them.... But it makes sense, doesn't it?....So much more pleasing and inviting.

At the cemetery where I work, we have a large Chinese clientele. All, even those who are Christian, purchase their graves with an eye to Feng Shui.

Your welcome Knots, and to everyone else. Never a problem to share knowledge here in the forums.
The Author of "Move Your Stuff, Change Your Life" is Karen Rauch Carter. GREAT book if you want a problem/resolution book on areas of your life linked to Feng Shui. The book provides sample/typical home problems, how it slows or speeds up specific areas in your life (i.e. Romance, Career, Health..etc.) and their "Cures".
Some of it makes great psychological sense. For example, it would be smart to get rid of that "Black Leather Chair" that was from your ex-spouse or negative mother-in-law. Subliminally, it would continue to sabotage your psychological "Chi" energy.
Or another example, it would be unwise to place your bed under a window, or in the pathway of the bedroom door. These positions would be detrimental because you would lose "Chi" energy and not rest well. Also, never place your bed directly under your ceiling fan where the "Chi" is being disturbed. It results in restless sleep. Another example is, never purchase a house on a downward slope. The subliminal affects is a sinking feeling and most households experience a form of financial decrease upon moving in (if not corrected) with other Feng Shui methods. The best home should be purchased in front of a mountain, hill or on top of one. It's a powerful image of the mountain holding the back of the house in place behind it. When you really think about it, it's all subliminal psychology...human reactions to one's surroundings. But perhaps also the Chi energy too as the Chinese believe....
Interesting topic isn't it?..... ;-}

Not Bad meadow but as a Zen Tao Chia'st try the following. What is Feng Shui? This is a simple question that can be difficult to answer. Feng Shui is an ancient art and science developed over 3,000 years ago in China. It is a complex body of knowledge that reveals how to balance the energies of any given space to assure the health and good fortune for people inhabiting it.
"Feng" means "wind" and "shui" means "water" (pronounced fung-shway). In Chinese culture gentle wind and clear water have always been associated with good harvest and good health, thus "good feng shui" came to mean good livelihood and fortune, while "bad feng shui" came to mean hardship and misfortune.
Feng Shui is based on the Taoist vision and understanding of nature, particularly on the idea that the land is alive and filled with Chi, or energy. The ancient Chinese believed that the land's energy could either make or break the kingdom, so to speak. The theories of yin and yang, as well as the five feng shui elements, are some of the basic aspects of a feng shui analysis that come from Taoism.
The main tools used in a feng shui analysis are the Compass and the Ba-Gua. The Ba-Gua is an octagonal grid containing the symbols of the I Ching, the ancient oracle on which Feng Shui is based. Knowing the Bagua of your home will help you understand the connection of specific feng shui areas of your home to specific areas of your life.
The feng shui compass, also called lo-pan, is used to access deeper information about a site or a building. It consists of bands of concentric rings arranged around the magnetic needle. "Lo" means "everything" and "pan" means "bowl", which can be interpreted as the key to the mysteries of the universe.
It is important to understand that there are several different schools of feng shui, as well as a strong culturally specific symbolic aspect of feng shui that you have to use intelligently. Once you master the basic level of feng shui, you will start seeing powerful results, and will understand why feng shui is extensively used in both home and business environments all over the world.
Feng Shui offers a variety of feng shui cures to improve your life. From the feng shui use of aquariums to attract prosperity to the feng shui use of crystals and fountains, from the right feng shui use of colors to the feng shui use of clocks, there are many ways you can improve the energy in your home with feng shui.

Imagine your house divided into nine squares, equally. Three by three by three. Much like a tic tac toe board.
The front middle square represents employment & success. The color for the entrance is red, the element is water.
Just to the left of the entry, is the area for skills and knowledge. This color is blue.
To the right of the entry, represents travel and helpful people. This color is represented by silver/reflective silver.
Moving to the next three squares...on the middle left is family. Represented by green. In the middle square, personal finance and the number 8. Colors are reds and yellows...this is also the health center of the home. And the middle far right, the children center. Represented by white circles. The element there should be child friendly, ie...not a fireplace, though if this is the case, there are "fixes" for that.
In the back left of the home, are material things in terms of wealth. This section is represented by jewel colors.
To the back middle of the house is fame and reputation. Represented by fire. Things in threes.
And back right...is romance. The color red and things in twos.
Of course, this is simplified. But it's it..in a nutshell.
