Same principle but without the board.
You pretend or believe the fantasy that the thoughts in your head are being guided and directed by an external force. On the other hand, people with schizoaffactive or bipolar or some other psychosis will hear voices and to them they will believe is the Holy Spirit. You can also have combination of the above.
You can believe if you get an idea that someone else inserted that idea into your head i.e. holy spirit or a demon or some disembodied spirit. You can call that idea divine inspiration. You can believe thoughts were put into your own head by some external force. That is as delusional as nuts who wear tin foil hats because they believe the CIA is trying to control their minds.
The religious are not very much in control over their own minds. They are inherently irrational. They are not mentally disciplined. They are brainwashed. They are superstitious. They are gullible. They are often stupid. They are often mentally ill.
It makes no difference if its crystal balls, pendulums, tarot cards, or palm reading. The gullible and stupid buy into all this garbage because they feel no control over their lives. The religions compete for control and offer their own delusions such as the Holy Spirit, saviors and heaven. There is no difference between any of those objects but dogma.

When a person does not have anything in life to cling to so they embrace life after death as the primary reason for being they are simply lying to themselves because what they really fear is living.

Religion is in the business of producing fear and guilt and its minsters are snake oil salesman. There is nothing good about a system of beliefs that causes dysfunction and distortions of reality.

You nailed it. My mom used to say if there was no hope in a hereafter, then life here is meaningless. I disageed with her.

I don't think it necessarily causes dysfunctions, but it certainly exacerbates already existing ones by misdiagnosing mental and physical problems as spiritual anomalies caused by external fantasy beings (demons and spirits).

I think it does cause dysfunctions because it plants seeds of irrationality in the mind. It causes a person to confabulate and interpolate reality which really amounts to making stuff up and saying its real.
If you view the world through a distorted lens, you'll never get it right. You'll always be building upon false impressions on top of false impressions like a dream. What happens to a person when their minds are so saturated with such crap? How can they live in a world and dream their lives away? They may function day to day, shopping for food, making a living at a job that doesn't require too much thinking or have a job that requires a lot of skill but anything outside that box is fantasy.

Honestly? My whole life I always viewed the Oija board as a game, nothing more. When I outgrew it, I never gave it another thought...

It's one thing to say hey, I'm a Christian, Buddhist, etc...then make it a big deal to do good, not name it. When we're bad-do we blame the same "force" we credited with the good?
