Here's a place to share the horrors and giggles that come from growing up Catholic.

A quote from my high school vice-principal:

"Wearing denim leads to the road of prostitution!"

Funniest thing is this wasn't addressed to a student(we, of course were all in plaid), but to our math teacher when she wore a long dungaree skirt

After I had grown up, my mom and I went out for a pizza with my fourth grade nun(who's a total hot shit) and a parish priest. When we were debating whether to order some wine with dinner, Father Finn settled it by saying, "just order some water. I'll change it into wine!"

C'mon Catholics, fallen-away Catholics, and ex-Catholics - I know you're out there!

Personally I think I'm a noun - contractions remind me of labor.

Catholic stuff - checking The Tablet banned movie list to set up our viewing schedule...

OMG, I forgot about that! In the multi-denominational chapels they had on Army posts, the list of movies and wicked books was posted on the bulletin board. I'd have never have read "Candy", "Lady Chatterly's Lover", and "Fanny Hill" if it hadn't been there...and available for reference for even we infidel li'l Protestant girls.

OMG we were NOT supposed to read or see"The Exorcist" so immediately my mom ran out and got a copy and I snuck and read it and went to see the movie as soon as I could get in the theatre oh heck I'm gonna burn I HAVE A COPY of "The Exorcist"...

As I have posted before the "females MUST cover their heads in church" thingy and so many of us made paper veils.. or tissue veils or wore our sweaters on our heads .. all for naught we no longer have to do this.. but how DARE we not back in the day...

Going to Catholic school of course meant that females could not do SO many things...like take drafting.. (oh Fr Boranaut had kiniptions at the mere thought) we could not play BASEball ..only SOFTball and I really don't remember seeing ANY male cheerleaders well except on spirit days when the jocks dressed up in the female cheerleader outfits I guess they was filled with the HOLY SPIRIT huh??

Ah yes heaven - those dances were QUITE educational. I learned that if you let your BFF drink too much Southern Comfort she'll pass out in a bathroom stall with her panties around her ankles and have to get her stomach pumped

And, let's face it - that damn list was how we all knew what flicks and books were worth the effort

It used to perplex me how the nuns would insist we didn't cross our legs(a smart crack to the upper thigh with a yardstick if ya did!). Given their feelings on sex, you'd think that's exactly what they'd want us to do

How about girls not being allowed to wear patten leather shoes when wearing a dress?

The rules were rediculous.

Peace

Because the boys could see up yer dress sail, and fill them with lust! Also why you never wore a white blouse without a sweater over it. Boys would see the outine of your training bra and go nutso

Catholic sex-ed. Gotta love it

I honestly loved a lot of it though. I'm old enough to remember when the Latin Mass was the only Mass - I loved the liturgy, the music, especially the chants, it was all so over the top beautiful. Sort of Cecil B. DeMille meets Franco Zeffirelli. And the nuns were great, at least to me - I was a soloist with the choir and used to spend weekends at their Blue Point Convent (really painful - beachside and beautiful)....singing Gregorian chants.

Muse,

You are bringing back some old memories. I grew up in Brooklyn. NY and there was a Catholic church called Saint Michael's that in the late 50's and early 60's gave dances every Saturday night (I think it was Saturday???). They were really good and had live performances by recording artists like Paul Anka. Lesley Gore, Johnny Mathis, Sam Cooke, The Four Tops, Bobby Vee, The Cupids, etc.

Murray the "K" would broadcast from the gymnasium on occasion and bring an assortment of artists with him.

Teenagers today no longer have the chance to experience this. The admission fee was cheap so you could afford to go every week if you wished. The recording business has grow too much and artists don't perform at local schools anymore.

Thanks for bringing back good times.

Peace

I remember going to the Catholic church with my Grandma.
I thought she was stopping inside the door to use an ashtray and rub ashes on herself...
I didn't know it was Holy water

I loved a lot of it as well Heaven. I look back on my Catholic youth mainly with fondness. If it hadn't been for that experience, I wouldn't be who I am today. A bitter ex-Catholic I am not. Just ex-Catholic

I'm glad I could help bring you to a happy place sail
