[edit] Proverbs 6:16–19 In Proverbs 6:16–19, it is stated that "(16) These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:" (quotes from King James Version (KJV) translation of the Bible). These are: (17) A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, (18) A heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, (19) A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren. More simply: lust), (gluttony), (greed), (sloth), (wrath), (envy), (pride).
Which is the worst, in your opinion? And we can discuss any of the lesser ones also!

I'll tell you. You really want to freak out. See the movie Seven with Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman and Keven Spacy. Its really a thriller and the ending is very shocking..

I'm sorry, I assumed everyone has seen it I won't put it on while the kids are in the room, I think it would give them horrible nightmares. I think its probably Kevin Spacey's finest performance.

The Five Poisons (Sanskrit: pañca-klesa; Tibetan: Japanese: go-sho), also known as the Five Disturbing Emotions are:
Passion ( desire, greed, lust, etc.) Aggression (anger, hatred, resentment etc.) Ignorance (bewilderment, confusion, apathy etc.) Pride (wounded pride, low-self esteem etc.) Jealousy ( envy, paranoia etc.) All Buddhist schools teach that through Tranquility (Samatha) meditation the kilesas are pacified, though not eradicated, and through Insight (Vipassana) the true nature of the kilesas and the mind itself is understood. When the empty nature of the Self and the Mind is fully understood, there is no longer a root for the disturbing emotions to be attached to, and the disturbing emotions lose their power to distract the mind.
Six Defilements of Vasubandhu Vasubandhu articulates an array of Six Kilesha rendered in English as the 'Six Basic Defilements' or 'Six Primary Afflictions' within the Abhidharma-kosa. The Six Kilesa are:
greed (Sanskrit: raga),
hatred (Sanskrit: pratigha),
ignorance (Sanskrit: avidya),
arrogance (Sanskrit: mana),
doubt (Sanskrit: vicikitsa), and
false views or opinionatedness (Sanskrit: d???i).[15] In the context of the Yogacara school of Buddhism, Muller (2004: p.207) states that the Six Klesa arise due to the "...reification of an 'imagined self' (Sanskrit: satkaya-d???i)."[

I would consider "greed" as being the worst "deadly sin", since it is the root that all the rest blossom from.
Peace

Thanks for the added info, Knots!
I have seen "Seven"....very good movie, very very sad ending. I can see what you mean, Cyn. Yes, I agree that greed could cause the rest. Envy could also cause a few.

Ignorance is the worst that there is and all arises from ignorance. I agree with you, but ignorance was not one of the "seven deadly sins". Of those, "greed" would be the worst.
Peace

Sloth and gluttony are the worst sins in my opinion. Not that any of them are good.

A Sin to one is another's hope! If you believe in Original Sin then there is no reason to number sins because original Sin is a trump card.....

The Satanic Bible refers to them as inborn desries programmed into people for the sake of evolution and progress. Anton Lavey wrote, for example, about pride being necessary for any self improvement. Gluttony, he said was simply eating more than is necessary to sustaiun you, and if you have eaten enough for obesity to set in, then the sin of pride will cause you to do what is necessary (diet, exercise) to lose weight and gain self respect.

Just because someone defines something as a Sin does not make it so unless you also buy into their dogma.

Just because someone defines something as a Sin does not make it so unless you also buy into their dogma. Lets examine: Pride- Without it, how else do you motivate accomplishment?
Greed- Can greed also be used to motivate. A salesperson's greed for commision motivates him to outsell his competitors, thus making more money for his company and economic growth for his community.
Envy- Can also motivate people to better themselves. A person desirous of having the nice things his nieghbor has can be motivated to get a better education, better job, better position so that they can have those things.
Lust- Also a motivation for love. A guy or gal may start out lusting after a nice looking potential mate and end up experiencing the love of their life.
Anger- Motivates people to defend themselves, discipline their children and right wrongs.
Gluttony- simply means eating more than it takes for survival, without gluttony, the culinary arts would be limited to seeds, berries and vitamin pills.
Sloth- Hard to find a justification on this one, but at the right time, it can simply be a reaction to over work or extreme stress.
None of these things are in reality good or bad, imo, it's their application and amount of use they see. It's all about moderation.
