To paraphrase........
Democracy demands that religion translate its concerns into the universal, not the religion specific values. Their proposals must be subject to argument and amenable to reason.
Politics depends on our ability to persuade on common aims based on a common realty. Involves compromise, the art of what's possible. Religion doesn't doesn't allow for compromise, its the art of the impossible.
I really enjoyed his using the Binding of Issac as an example.
Also, go visit an really fun site. http://yoism.org

Sail Great minds think alike.
Whatever one thinks of Obama as a politician is open to debate in the political forums but I considered his treatment of religion to be very rational because he understands the need for the "common" good in how religious thinking gets translated into public policy. He knows religion can be a source for good but also a source for bigotry too. He seems to understand the secular concerns of the Founding Fathers.

I reserve any judgment on Obama we have all heard his rhetoric yet none of us have experienced him with any direct experience. He is a mystery to everyone.

as for me and "rhetoric", i judge men (in this case) by their actions and not their words. i have yet to encounter one politician who has kept his word except when the word WAR is within the rhetoric. LOL perhaps the only logical rebuttal was Carter. i have no doubt that he endured as little rhetoric as he possibly could. but then again, there are few that will argue that he was not a christian. selah. we be jammin

Here is a copy of the mailer that Barry sent out during the Primary proclaiming his Christian beliefs and how he will make decisions with guidance of his prayer. Kinda like W did.

jerry - W caught hell for saying the same things about his religious beliefs that Barry now claims. Read the brochure. It sounds exactly like what W said.
This idea that he is secular is insane. Read the brochure

Surprisingly, like yash, I am reserving judgement on Obama.
While I feel his Christian thinking may be flawed and maybe lukewarm. We will have to wait and see what kind of president he makes.
I have heard many who think he is the antichrist, hmmm, will reserve judgement on that, too. I am not too worried, it is prophesied that the antichrist will come. I am not going to worship any president, though, so that would just mean the end of time is near and the return of the Lord is much nearer.

Well to me the issue here is the following so I'll address myself entirely to this:
Democracy demands that religion translate its concerns into the universal, not the religion specific values. Their proposals must be subject to argument and amenable to reason I find this... In the tradition of modern Western thought, philosophy and civilisation. Since about... 1700?
We already discussed the Enlightenment, Locke, Washington and other Deists. And we found that the United States and the English-speaking world were (eventually) constituted in the image of Deism and democratic freedom.
And you don't need to thank God for that (in a democracy, that interpretation is entirely optional).
