The Jerusalem Syndrome is a documented mental disorder. Psychiatrists and Israeli Intelligence officers keep a close eye on the numerous nutters walking the streets in Jerusalem as they are a potential threat to stability in the region which could cause repercussions in the world. They are mostly from America but a few nuts also exist in Canada.

There are many people who are walking psychotic time bombs as a result of their fanatical religiosity and delusional dogma. They may appear "normal" on the surface but are set off by certain psychotic experiences or just showing up in Jerusalem as a tourist. This video makes it clear such people are a possible threat to themselves, to others and the world.

This 20 minute video is produced by ABC Australia

Also, there is an NPR interview of Dr Pesach Lichtenberg, an Israeli psychiatrist living in Jerusalem explain this mental illness and its prevalence in religious fanatics who visit Jerusalem.

He says
Sometimes the sights and sounds of Jerusalem can overwhelm believers and trigger psychotic episodes. Israeli psychiatrist Pesach Lichtenberg says that he has seen visitors and residents overcome with the belief they have a messianic mission.

My take on this is that many people of a religious persuasion go to Jerusalem as a pilgrimage seeking the holy grail. What they find is the Disney Land of Religion filled with many tourist spots that make claims with statement like. "It is thought that this" place is where [what ever] they wish to claim.

None of these tourist spots have ever been verified as true.

There is some video floating around of David Koresh playing guitar in a hotle room in Jerusalem. Not long after that tape was made, it was reported that Koresh began to audibly hear the voice of God and recieve special visions regarding the coming Apocalypse. Shame he didn't stick with the guitar, he was actually pretty good with that.

Its your poorly educated mind against actual psychiatrists whom you should probably get yourself into therapy with.

Your lack of knowledge in psychology and cognitive science has already been confirmed. What is actually stupid is showing how much you lack the ability to respond to what the documentary shows us about religious fanatics. Its about sick people, people you relate to, who have an obsessive and compulsive religiosity. They are feeding the tourism business in Israel but most importantly many become psychotic and become potential threats as shown in the documentary. The Jerusalem Syndrome is a documented mental illness. Seems you are in denial of this but maybe you have first hand experience with it.

Could we say that about Charles Manson too? Ever hear his song Garbage Dump?

Actually a couple of Charlie's songs did get recorded. "Cease to Exist" was redone by the Beach Boys as "Never Learn not to Love" and one of hs songs was actually done by Guns and Roses, profits from it were donated to the victims' families.

Thats nice but the victims were already wealthy. Profits should have been donated to scientific research to find ways to inoculate humanity from brainwashing and indoctrination. Manson was just another example of how a maniac can deranged gullible people to follow him. When he said he was Jesus and Satan and whatever you wanted him to be, he wasn't lying. He gave away the secret to how he and so many other megalomaniacs, religious and secular, manipulated minds. One must note that secular megalomaniacs used techniques that were religious based ideologies. Stalin was trained in a seminary. Imperial leaders were expected to be treated as gods of the state and miracles were also proposed. In this sense, its all religiosity where blind faith, obedience, submission is required.

-----------

Notice no Christian could respond to the OP because whats in it are examples of themselves. You can't count SL's response as rational because she would see herself in that documentary. Such minds struggle with their dissonance.

Not all of them were. The original Tate/LaBianca victims' families were well off, but there was a list of other victims the Manson family were responsible, Shorty Shea, I believe, they found his body about 10 years after the crimes.

Manson was just another example of how a maniac can deranged gullible people to follow him.

It should be noted that most of the people in Manson's entourage came from religious backgrounds. Susan Atkins sang in a church choir and Leslie Van Houten taught sunday school. While people may argue that may have had nothing to do with their brainwashing, the fact that their minds were open to magical thinking along with a desire to belong , made them particularly ripe for someone like Manson to put his brainwash MoJo on them.

I agree. Religious people by virtue of their religiosity are magical thinkers. Many seek to avoid critical thinking, logic and reason altogether. They are gullible and fall for anyone's magical solutions to their problems. To folks like that, the more "out there" a leader is, the more believable they are. Manson grew up on the streets and street people can be the biggest bullshiters around. Him being a little guy learned quickly how to bullshit really well. He had to learn to learn to talk his way out of fights. Its all about survival. Manson learn the hard way how to be an evangelist.

Getting back to the The Jerusalem Syndrome, the documentary shows us how many today are mentally disturbed and victimized by dogma and delusion. Many of the Christians in these forums are just like those in the video.

Maybe we should have a special thread for "the closed, intransigent mind..." Which actually isn't a mind at all, it's a soul.

As ten CC once wrote, some have balls and brains, others have balls and chains...

Some have a soul and a mind, some have a mind, and some just have a soul...

Blessed Souls... are blank sheets upon which religiosity, the world and its history can be re-written - through the eyes of divine glory and piety.... the soul syndrome.

Thanks, iam, that was a good video and I learned a lot about this Jerusalem Syndrome.

I suppose that it can happen anywhere, as I have seen christians in my own town acting in a Jerusalem Sydrome manner. About 5 years ago a man in my town decided Jesus told him to hold up a sign on a busy sidewalk stating Jesus saves. I talked to the man and he said Jesus told him how big his sign should be and what type of paint to use for his lettering. He also knew when someone was saved as they drove by in a car.

I also noticed that the "prophecy" teacher quoted Rev.14:20 And the winepress was trodden without the city; and blood came out of the winepress, even unto the horses bridles, by the space of a thousand and six hundred furlongs.

600 furolongs =180 miles. Therefore1,600 furlongs=400 or so miles, I guess. Anyway, how many people and animals have to die in order to shed enough blood to come up to a horses bridle? This verse always seemed literally impossible to me because all the blood of the people and animals being slaughtered would have to be shed at the same time and much of the blood would be absorbed into the ground. Also, I thought how much blood does a horse produce? Anyway, the whole verse seems ridiculous if taken literally. Yet, this "prophecy" teacher is quoting this verse and all the Christians are agreeing with his interpretation. One women in the video repeated it and I thought to myself, lady, did you think about how impossible it would be to shed that much blood at one time?

Another thing that always bothers me is the Christians who want to be crucifed. In the Phillipines the crucifed one has actual nails put in his hands. Ouch, who would do this willingly? These people really are crazy.

Glad you enjoyed the documentary. I could watch it again and still be astounded from it. Sometimes I even think people just aren't this insane, that its all a put on, some practical joke they're playing but no, they're real. Did you notice in the video an Israeli agent explains why they need to keep tabs on these nutters just in case they try to start a war with the Arabs? Last thing we need is worldwide repercussions from religious fanatics all over the world because of one nut job hearing God talk instructing him to blow up the temple. We have a few in these forums who have hallucinations too.

Under the Bush administration some of these nutters used to frequent the White House being given a sympathetic ear. I hope Obama is a little more judicious about who they let in.

Does anyone notice no Christian was able to cope with the OP posted documentary? Its a documentary about them and about a documented mental illness. The Jerusalem Syndrome is a real mental illness.

Christians have shown themselves to be such feeble minded folks ready to prove they are mentally ill. They openly display their weakness of mind, lack of knowledge, willingness to believe in fantasy and to devote their lives to a delusion.

(chuckle) Occasionally I read one of your posts. This time, I read the last one on this thread.

Let me suggest a distinct possibility for you, Iam.

It's possible that I'm not the only one who is not reading your posts. lol. Cute huh?

Anyway, this is why no Christian is responding, imo. They didn't watch your stupid video, as I didn't, and they didn't respond to your thread because it's the usual nonsense that you always tend to post.

Sorry. Try a new tack, Iam. We're bored with your usual idiocy. See?

DEB,

On your post above on Rev 14:20, relating to the winepress and the blood to the bridles for 1600 furlongs.

I can find two correlations for these symbols. Pilgrims walking the wilderness from Mount of Olives to Mird-Hyrcania tranversed 16 stadia. Celibates living in the monasteries had latrine rules specifying exact distances from living quarters to the latrine, so the building was called 1600.

The second is the link between a vineyard and a winepress. The winepress gives us the month of this event and the vineyard the location, which I put at Agrippa ll's house in Rome. The event was the result of another end-time prediction that didn't come true, and 1600 stadia here is the distance between Herod's house and a church named Domine Quo Vadis. This church had an entrance to the catacombs where the guilty could hide out, and being an unclean place because of dead bodies, it was on the level of a latrine. We can name the players and the events but that is not necessary for verse 14:20.

As you related in the response of the listeners, sometimes the imagination of the followers has been allowed to run unchecked by the clergy.

What is the book you're reading, Uncrazy, as it sounds interesting and I'd really like to understand Revelation better....at least all the symbolism and what it means.

Southernlass---I personally witnessed some of the bizarre behavior this woman exhibited in the movie. Anyone who has attended a charismatic or pentecostal church has probably seen similar behavior. I've seen people roll on the floor, howl like a wolf, run around the building shouting strange gibberish, speaking in tongues and other weird doings. So, it's not odd that going to Jerusalem would set someone off who already is on the edge of insanity. No, I don't believe all Christians are capable of this kind of behavior, but, there are many who are and have literally gone crazy because of their belief that the they are truly holy and spiritual if they exhibit flamboyant behavior.

Well, I'm not in the habit of judging my fellow Christian brothers and sisters, short of if they are doing something to harm themselves or another. And based upon Iam's glee in finding the exception to the rule of the religious, I think I can live without seeing the film.

If he had even the potential to crack open his mind even a hair's width, I would watch it and comment accordingly. There is no exchange of thought to be had with Iam, Deb. There is only being berated by him for being Christian.
