According to quantum physics, yes !
Schrödinger's Cat -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- On June 7 of 1935, Erwin Schrödinger wrote to Albert Einstein to congratulate him on what is now known as the EPR paper, a famous problem in the interpretation of Quantum Mechanics. Soon thereafter, he published what was to become one of the most celebrated paradoxes in quantum theory:
Schrödinger's Cat
A cat is placed in a box, together with a radioactive atom. If the atom decays, and the geiger-counter detects an alpha particle, the hammer hits a flask of prussic acid (HCN), killing the cat. The paradox lies in the clever coupling of quantum and classical domains. Before the observer opens the box, the cat's fate is tied to the wave function of the atom, which is itself in a superposition of decayed and undecayed states. Thus, said Schroedinger, the cat must itself be in a superposition of dead and alive states before the observer opens the box, ``observes'' the cat, and ``collapses'' it's wave function. In particle wave physics therefore, the atoms of the cat are decayed and undecayed at the same time, therefore "alive" and "dead" simultaneously. But opening the box reverses the state. So the cat is alive and normal again, after having being both "decayed" and "undecayed" simultaneously. It's been demonstrated in physics then that we can be both alive and dead at the same time.
This is a physical not a spiritual phenomenon. But it might mean another level of existence. Is scientific reality actually more miraculous and wondrous than anything men might ever have dreamed up in books? Are research findings in many ways more incredible than the things scientists set out to discover or prove?

Can a cat be alive and dead at the same time? I know there are many fundy Christians who can be physically alive and intellectually dead at the same time. To ask such Christians to think is like asking them to commit a mortal sin.
Quantum physics has proven phenomenon. Particles can exist and not exist at the same time. Quantum fluctuations do occur spontaneously.
Thus, said Schroedinger, the cat must itself be in a superposition of dead and alive states before the observer opens the box, ``observes'' the cat, and ``collapses'' it's wave function. According to Stuart Hammeroff, the collapse of the wave function from superposition is what creates consciousness in the brain. This takes place in the brain in microtubles that hold quantum states. Experiments have been done to support his hypothesis and shows there are backward effects of the brain responding before a stimuli.

So that conceivably, consciousness both exists and does not exist in the wave function, simultaneously... in a combined 'physical' and particle energy form...
(actually the 'appearance' of physical form is just an expression of same energy).
Thus there is also a superposition of both the 'physical' and the energy form which collapses into the present moment of consciousness...
So, can both exist in separation?

both? No, all. Superposition means possible all states but only one comes into reality in the waveform collapse. As with the cat, its either dead or alive. It doesn't take into account if its alive that its sleeping or awake but that too must be considered.

We perceive consciousness only in the present moment (memories are recordings of past states), so we (and existence) are changing their states continuously. Life is a form of constant altered states? Until the current form has altered so much by oxygenation aging or destruction that it no longer functions... end of state... but end of consciousness?

Wondering now if this is where Past lives and the feelings of deja vu come into play?? the Feeling of being both dead and alive ...the consciousness of both,, the reality of both??

I think it could be Becks...if time is only 'real' because it's how we perceive events, everything that's ever happened, or ever will happen, is happening right now. If that's so, everyone who's ever lived still lives, but not necessarily perceptible to us.
Great material for producing a headache, but still fascinating!

Overlapping states... maybe it's all been played out before and left traces...
It is like existence is just a continuous flow of moments into the past, but we are in physical control of our 'organism' so we affect things through our current decisions to think, feel, move and communicate. We all share the same moment of existence, no one is ahead or behind, not even slightly. So it is possible that previous existence is still here within the universal energy. Otherwise, why would the entire universe be present in the same moment, unless it is permanently in the present moment?

Is this any different than when a person floats above their own body, but then brought back to life?

The short answer is..................................................... no!
Maybe the universe wants to improve its consciousness and uses us as an energy form to do so...

Otherwise, why would the entire universe be present in the same moment, unless it is permanently in the present moment? Let's not forget the holographic universe theory - that suggests that an image of the entire universe exists within everything that exists within that universe - can be combined with the fact that everything that ever happened exists simultaneously. That suggests that anything that ever was or will be, and everyone who ever lived or will live, exists right now, and actually the image or record of that existence is part of each of us.
So, maybe we all ARE part Christ, part Hitler, part Buddha and part Mengele...? Good and evil intermixed within us, and it's our choice as to which path we take?

Or then again, maybe there's no choice - if the record of our lives already exists...

I was thinking about the energy of the holographic universe, Heaven.
I saw a science programme about the atom / nuclear energy this week. It's been demonstrated that organisms - us - generate more energy and heat per square inch than the sun does per square inch. We are little suns wandering around here... No wonder the planet is warming up with our efforts lol...

"The molecules of your body are the same molecules that make this station and the nebula outside, that burn inside the stars themselves. We are star-stuff. We are the Universe, made manifest, trying to figure itself out. And, as we have both learned, sometimes the Universe needs a change of perspective."

~~grin~~ We're doing a great job here then - today will be 107, tomorrow 113, with a heat alert posted for Friday so they're expecting that to be at least 115. Yep, it's all our fault.

Yes Napa we're all made of the same energy particles - they are truly universal. And we are an expression of its consciousness and its self-awareness - radiating across existence ...
Everything on earth can be found in the sun. Water and amino acids form from the same gases and minerals.
At first they thought the sun produced the inert gas helium, but the sun's not hot enough. They discovered the helium was produced everywhere throughout the universe by energy. It ends up here from everywhere.

"We are star stuff harvesting star light. Our lives, our past and our future are tied to the sun, the moon and the stars. [We are]...star stuff contemplating the stars, organized collections of ten billion, billion, billion atoms, contemplating the evolution of nature, tracing that long path by which it arrived at consciousness here on the planet earth, and perhaps throughout the cosmos." ~ Carl Sagan, "The Cosmos"
