Like Westboro, the Amazing Grace Baptist Church of Canton, NC has a tiny membership -- all of 14 people. It's amazing how much damage a small group can do.

Dubbed the Christian Taliban by neighboring church members, Amazing Grace Baptist Church is hosting a book burning for Halloween. And what is to be burned? The Story of O, Lady Chatterley's Lover, A Clockwork Orange perhaps?

Nope. The "congregants" of Amazing Grace (who I'm sure are one giant in-bred family like the Phelpses) will be burning non-KJV Bibles, the writings of Billy Graham, Mother Theresa and Rick Warren. Now those are three of the four horsemen of the Apocalypse!

A few contemporary Christian CDs are also slated for the pyre.

Fried chicken and all the sides will be served.

Yikes!!!!

...Update, is that Obama is on the VIP list... maybe it was the fried chicken and the Rev. Wright is frying.

East: It's amazing how much damage a small group can do.

...What damage? That appears to be a bit sensational.

...Radical fanatics exist everywhere and 14 people is not exactly a consideration in today's society, not exactly a comparison to the damage of what millions of far left, or far right radicals are methodically causing to all of this society.

...Imagine yourself surrounded by a few million radicals, where you either comply, or you die... and they are considered a normality in their social entity.

...Burning a few books is nothing... simply ignore them.

...Mainstream still exists in about 80% of those that live someplace in the middle, those that can come to an agreement of live and let live.

They are burning all bible versions except the King James...

It's called "Mock Book Burning"...the Cedar City Library did this in 2007.

...Back to that core fundamental right of "freedom of religion," where it is for all and not just the minority, nor just the majority, but for all.

...Sure, we think these 14 people are crazy, while the atheists think Christians are crazy, etc. Nevertheless, it is their right and we cannot pick and choose which we will allow and which we will not.

...We can only pick and choose what we, as an individual by conviction, will participate in... while I am going to stretch it a bit and say this is exactly why I don't participate in any Christian church/denomination that compromises for membership, such as the acceptance of homosexuality and sodomy.

...When you accept, you endorse and does personal compliance with my personal conviction make me a radical? Only when the social endorsement of anything by the majority, does that make the convictions of the minority as the perception as so.

...Live and let live, as long as not trespassing against your personal space, as in breaking constitutional law, or that derived by same as approved by the Supreme Court. That does not indicate we have to participate, accept and thus, condone by default. After all, if they can burn the American flag, who cares about a few books? Why sensationalize what is not there?

I sure do hope there's a Fire Hydrant near by in case it gets windy.

I would expect that a permit from the city and local Fire Department would have to be in order for this to take place.

I have read that this church has planned to make it an annual event.

Here's a Google Cache of their website, for that was locked or suspended...

Why stop there?

Since book burning is so applauded, I would like to inform all in attendance that the King James Bonfire will be held at 8:30 PM Saturday night outside my home in honor of the Amazing Grace Baptist Church. There will be campfire games and fun for the entire family. In lieu of admission fees, it is expected that those in attendance bring one copy per person of the king james bible.

After all, who cares about a few books?

...Back to that core fundamental right of "freedom of religion," where it is for all and not just the minority, nor just the majority, but for all.

And since when does one right -- freedom of religion -- supercede another -- freedom of speech? No where did I say they didn't have the right to only use a KJV Bible, but to engage in an act that stifles free speech -- and rest assured, the members of this church will not limit themselves to this one act -- is not right or proper.

And when I say that these members will not limit themselves to burning books in their church parking lot, I speak from experience. Their was a fundamentalist sect that moved into my hometown. They did not have a stand-alone church, but met in rented space in an industrial park. In addition to their book burning, they beseiged the local library as well as the libraries in local schools and teachers. So, I don't believe that this group's actions will end here.

It's called "Mock Book Burning"...the Cedar City Library did this in 2007.

No, the "mock" book burning in Cedar City, Utah was an educational program where damaged books were burned, rather than destroyed by other means, to demonstrate what a book burning really is. It was used in conjunction with a teaching program on Farenheit 451, Ray Bradbury's cautionary tale about a censorship. Individuals who requested bringing objectionable books to this mock book burning were denied.

What is happening in Canton, NC is not a mock burning. People are being invited to burn actual books, which they believe no one else should read. There is a big difference.

Here's a link to the mock book burning referenced by Angel.

I don't know...

I think there are bigger things to worry about than 14 christian whack jobs and their minions acting stupid. As long as this is as far as they go, who cares?? It's a good laugh.

Now if they start packing and taking "Onward christian Soldiers" literally.......

Alive, there isn't a much hell being raised here as there was for the Christians protesting military funerals. And there weren't many of them either.

You're right K...

The Phelps clan IS dangerous...and should be taken down if for no other reason than the one you cite...

These clowns just seem to have taken the "pomp & circumstance" ritualistic ceremonial hangups christians seem to have to a comedy extreme. Probably 14 folks don't do a lot for the offertory plate there, and they're looking for some $$ from the publicity. As long as it doesn't go beyond this it's not much more than a good laugh. Keep an eye on em, sure, like any loonies should be watched...but don't make more of it than the joke it is...for now anyway!!

JMHO...
