This is not surprising, since most religions have merely canonized a few products of ancient ignorance and derangement and passed them down to us as though they were primordial truths. This leaves billions of us believing what no sane person could believe on his own. In fact, it is difficult to imagine a set of beliefs more suggestive of mental illness than those that lie at the heart of many of our religious traditions. -- Sam Harris Many Christians and many fanatical religious people show frustration in their futile attempts to express justification for the absurdities they worship. They often take out their anger and frustration at people who have the audacity to expose the ludicrous nature of their absurd beliefs. Its like someone saying the emperor is wearing no clothes. The religious don't expect it or want to hear it. No one wants to appear stupid or delusional by admitting they don't see the clothing but its an unavoidable truth. Another unavoidable truth is quite a few actually see the clothing which is more suggestive of psychosis.
Imagine someone speaking a few French words over their bowl of cereal and insisting it turns into the body and blood of Napoleon. Imagine someone says they had a conversation in French with their poodle and it went something like this, "Monsieur, why are you so cruel to me?" (translated into English). Insane people really do say things like this. Now imagine hundreds of people at the same time praying over a bowl of Napoleon's body and blood. Imagine millions. That's a religion.
Such beliefs, by nature, are no different than Christian beliefs yet we would easily consider believing a bowl of Napoleon's body and blood to be ridiculous and the person believing it to be crazy. Religious people believe in the same kinds of things en masse. They insist its real and they want respect for it. They get insulted when you call them crazy and complain about it all over the place. Its a hilarious dope show to watch these people go through their motions. What they come up with is often just as ridiculous as their own beliefs. They might even tell you, you're crazy for not believing in these things because you'll suffer after you die. How can it get more funnier than that?
Lets take a quick look at this...
The first woman on earth is made from a man's bone. A man has a conversation with a talking donkey. A couple speak to a talking snake. A talking shrub that is also on fire speaks to a man with a beard. Jesus defies gravity by levitating to the clouds. Jesus defies Archimedes principle by walking on water. Blood flows down a river. A 90 year old women gets pregnant. A woman turns into a pile of salt simply by looking at something. A man lives in a fish's belly for 3 days underwater. A man turns water into wine instantly. Pi=3 Earth stops rotating for a day. Selected animals of the world parade together for a 40 day cruise.
If this wasn't a required set of beliefs for a religion it would easily be considered beliefs of the severely delusional, the psychotic, the mentally ill. How are Christians not embarrassed at this fact? Or maybe they are and just not telling us. How do they contort their own minds to insist to themselves and others the emperor is wearing clothing? Clearly, large groups of people believing in the same nonsense is a comfort.

Please don't try and push the Sam Harris nonsense off onto the forum without expecting you'll be called on it. Your radical, wacked out perspective is certainly not one to be referring to other perspectives as "mental illness."
Anyone, who actually takes the advice of an atheist nazi like Sam Harris seriously, who essentially turns atheism into aggressive, fundamentalist, anti-God preachings is someone I fear for sanity-wise.
The guy is a fruitcake and his followers are cult-like groupies. He is as radical as they come and so are you, because you evidently worship his tripe sold to the public as something actually based on reason. NOT.
He packages his hate speech in lies, calling for the end of faith, the end of religion, and a host of other insulting scenarios. He purports to dictate to others what their beliefs can and should be or they deserve to be mocked. He is bigoted, ignorant, and foolish, as are you -- you're clearly a good little follower of Sam Harris. I certainly wouldn't brag about it.

Notice SL's deflective and incoherent behavior to avoid confronting the issue of her own absurd beliefs. The face of Sam Harris makes her flip out. She wriggles and squirms by taking out her anger and frustration out at people who have the audacity to tell them what is so obvious.
What does she think of someone who insists a bowl of cereal is the body and blood of Napoleon? Does she respect their beliefs as true? Is there a psychological diagnosis or are they completely sane? How does that translate to the beliefs of a Hindu who believes in Vishnu and reincarnation? How does that translate to the Native American's belief in Gitchi Manitou? What about ancient Greeks who believed in Zeus and Apollo? She runs into the problem of turning the spotlight on herself. Is there a double standard here?
SL can not directly confront the real issue. To her a man's ass really did speak, the world really did stop rotating for a day and most definitely a man floated away into the sky.

Admitting you are mentally ill doesn't imply you know why or do you? Even the mentally ill can be intelligent and have lucid moments where they realize on a certain level their own irrationality but that would imply one had some level of knowledge to think with. Some Christians here have the ambition to deny themselves knowledge, logic and reasoning because blind faith is all they want. We know who they are. Religiosity depends on the narrow minded, ignorant and ultimately the ridiculous.
Do we know who said this?

If it wasn't for my mental illness, your mental illness would have nothing better to do...lol. Well, that is a rather brilliant statement, Katt. Sums everything up in this thread quite well, I think.
It's picture time again, kiddies. Iam's going to teach us something.

You're in the picture. The second comment. Forgot already? You taught us that stupidity is a virtue. To avoid thinking is stupidity. Willful ignorance is stupidity.
So did the donkey talk ?

Praying is part of the mental illness believing you can do magic. Why not pray for sanity? You'd get the same results.
So did Jesus float off the ground into the sky? You are forced to say yes. Did the earth stop rotating for a day? You are forced to say yes.

I'll state it again Many Christians and many fanatical religious people show frustration in their futile attempts to express justification for the absurdities they worship. They often take out their anger and frustration at people who have the audacity to expose the ludicrous nature of their absurd beliefs.
They do not seem to have the ability to show us why their beliefs are any more rational than someone who says they were taken aboard an alien space vessel or says Elvis is alive. Its obvious they are incapable of comparing their own beliefs with those who hold different irrational beliefs other than religious gibberh.
How would SL do a paper on such a topic in a class on abnormal psychology? Would she bring the bible to class and say this is why she is sane and the talking donkey really did speak? I'd give anything to sit in the front row.

Ehrrr, difficulty forming your own thoughts about this? I understand. Its a very scary topic. I guess you glossed over most of it. As soon as one reads a line that upsets them, they skim over the rest of it. Too traumatic.

Agreed Joshua...of course I question the sanity of even responding to this nonsense. Einstein's definition of insanity was doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results...why respond? It's same old same old.
Booooooooring.

Folks who can't reconcile their beliefs with rationality will usually get frustrated, upset and just lash out at anyone daring to state the obvious. If the emperor is wearing no clothes keep your mouth shut. Do not disturb. We're too busy fooling ourselves and if you say something stupid like "Look, he's naked" we might get upset. We don't want to see a naked man parading down the street. No, the reality is too painful and upsetting.
So if anyone has nothing else better to than to vent why not post some actual facts, things that exist in the real world like how anything in this really is true? I don't think its too much to ask. Actual facts? Is that unreasonable?

Religion is not a mental illness. It is normal for people to have faith in something. I admit, people can go so over board that it becomes a mental illness, but thats the person, not the religion.
