OTTAWA, Canada (Reuters) -- Canadian troops fighting Taliban militants in Afghanistan have stumbled across an unexpected and potent enemy -- almost impenetrable forests of marijuana plants 10 feet tall.
General Rick Hillier, chief of the Canadian defense staff, said Thursday that Taliban fighters were using the forests as cover. In response, the crew of at least one armored car had camouflaged their vehicle with marijuana.
"The challenge is that marijuana plants absorb energy, heat very readily. It's very difficult to penetrate with thermal devices. ... And as a result you really have to be careful that the Taliban don't dodge in and out of those marijuana forests," he said in a speech in Ottawa, Canada.
"We tried burning them with white phosphorous -- it didn't work. We tried burning them with diesel -- it didn't work. The plants are so full of water right now ... that we simply couldn't burn them," he said.
Even successful incineration had its drawbacks.
"A couple of brown plants on the edges of some of those [forests] did catch on fire. But a section of soldiers that was downwind from that had some ill effects and decided that was probably not the right course of action," Hiller said dryly.
One soldier told him later: "Sir, three years ago before I joined the army, I never thought I'd say 'That damn marijuana'."

Hmmm...this made me curious. Does the military (US/Canada/UK) do routine drug testing (and/or alcohol testing) like they do in a lot of other government and private industry jobs? What about for the National Guard and Reserves, especially the ones who've been activated? (people suddenly yanked out from their civilian lives)

I don't find the fact that Canadian soldiers might be killed because of this to be very funny.
Guess the next time some of YOUR American soldiers get blown to bits by the Taliban I should start a thread and make fun of it

I find the possibility of a Canadian soldier being killed by a Taliban UN-funny.
So let's change it and make it an American soldier who is going to get his ass blown up by the Taliban..

Or are dead soldiers coming home in coffins funny? Or is it because you're so used to war that it's not a big deal to you? You have been in a few for a few years water. Maybe thats it. Maybe you just dont get it anymore. Is that it?
I'm from Canada. We don't do war. At least we didn't used to. And now we do and that BOTHERS ME!!.. A lot.. I don't find DEAD kids FUNNY.
Do you not get it water? Or don't you just not care anymore that the people who come back from this war are DEAD?

OK, I have said it twice about the intent of the post and no one has taken it outside of that except you. You have really taken this WAY to far, again there was no insult, no wish for harm, nothing to do this CA/US it WAS THE PLANTS that is ALL. Man I have no idea what your problem is and I am trying to play nice, so get over your perceived HURT (this is directed at YOU not Canada) none was given.
I refuse to get into a us/them thing, you can enjoy it but I am good at physics, when i run into a wall i usually stop.

sunbabe, to answer your question, i stood in front of the batallion colonel prior to my "release" and he bluntly stated: jammin, i know every doper in the ambulance platoon and you aren't one of them. there is no way i'm gonna let you get away with this scam. oh, i had my traveling papers already! if they were to actually screen for queers and dopers they would lose approximately 25% of the soldiers. IMHO of course. of course there will never be an actual documented survey so, this is all B S
