Senator Bill Nelson's Son Arrested And Jailed During Father's Victory Party

Mary K. Brunskill - All Headline News Staff Writer Orlando, FL (AHN) - A few hours after Florida Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson won re-election, his son, Charles William Nelson, was arrested and jailed by Orlando police on charges of battery on a law officer, disorderly intoxication and resisting arrest without violence. Nelson, 30, was celebrating his father's victory over Katherine Harris before a fight broke out at around 2:45 am.
According to the Miami Herald and Officer William C. Becton's report of the incident the fight occurred at a party Sen. Nelson was holding at Embassy Suites Hotel in Orlando. Police arrived on the scene and saw the younger Nelson, who seemed to be drunk, with a woman who appeared to be passed out.
According to the officer, the woman, Kimberly Baxter, was slumped over on the corner of Pine Street and Magnolia Avenue and Nelson reeked of alcohol, was slurring his speech, and was unable to stand upright.
"It was apparent that the defendant was not capable of making an informed decision concerning Ms. Baxter's condition," Becton says.
The Orlando Sentinel reports that Nelson tried to drag Baxter to the hotel after Becton radioed headquarters for an ambulance and then dropped her when he was told to put her down.
Police say Nelson was told to leave the area and refused. The report shows he was forced to the ground and continued fighting while a crowd gathered to watch.
Becton's report states, "I called for emergency assistance. I then deployed a 2-3 second burst of pepper spray to his face. The defendant rolled over onto his stomach and I handcuffed him."
Nelson was released from jail after posting bail. The Sentinel could not report on Baxter's condition as of Wednesday morning.
Like I said, "new fish in the barrel".
