A former member of the Russian successor of the KGB, friend of the reporter and Putin critic murdered in her Moscow apartment last month, and a critic of Putin in his own right is under armed guard in a London hospital after he was poisoned. An interesting story. Here's the link:

I've seen the stories about the murder of Anna Politkovskaya here on TV. Dozens of journalists have been intimidated or killed in Russia for exposing corruption. I guess now they're targetting defectors residing in other countries.
To anyone that thinks our government is corrupt, you haven't studied Russian politics. They're in a whole other universe.

I wonder if the Russians did it or if they used the Bulgarians? If I remember correctly, the assassination of a Soviet dissident in London (very Cold War, he was poked with an umbrella) a few years back was the work of the Bulgarians. Also, let's not forget the attempt on the life of the current president of the Ukraine.

"Security sources said MI5 believes the Russian intelligence services assassinated Mr Litvinenko. Britain made a formal request to Moscow for help in the murder investigation. But Mr Putin left diplomats open-mouthed with claims that the former spy did not die ‘a violent death’. " Daily Mail
Sources at MI5 support the contention that this was a state-sponsored assassination and hold the Russians culpable.
There is also concern that given the properties of polonium 210, anyone who came into contact with this man, including his wife and child who gave him a final kiss, are at risk. Public health officials are debating whether they should conduct an autopsy, or if it would be too risky for the pathologist. Yikes.

It gets curiouser and curioser...A new story out of London...Investigators are looking more deeply into the relationship between the former KGB agent killed this week in London and the Russian journalist murdered in her apartment building this summer. Apparently, at the time of her murder, the Russian journalist was investigating rumors that the Breslan school hostage taking was a "false flag" operation -- an action by one group made to look as if it was commited by another.

An update. London's Times online is reporting that law enforcement now has a visual of the assassin.

The Guardian is running a story in today's paper about Putin's "disappearing" enemies...and it's not a cocktail party trick.
