Lawmaker Fears 'More Muslims' In Office Virginia Rep. Virgil Goode Issues Warning After First Muslim Elected To Congress
Rep. Virgil Goode, R-Va., is standing by a letter he wrote to constituents warning that "many more Muslims" will be elected to office if the U.S. doesn’t tighten immigration laws.
"... if American citizens don't wake up and adopt the Virgil Goode position on immigration, there will likely be many more Muslims elected to office and demanding the use of the Koran."
(AP) Responding to constituent e-mails about Rep.-elect Keith Ellison's decision to use the Quran at his ceremonial swearing-in, a Virginia congressman warned that "many more Muslims" will be elected and demanding to use the Quran unless immigration is tightened.
Rep. Virgil Goode, R-Va., made the comments in a letter sent to hundreds of constituents about Ellison, D-Minn., the first Muslim elected to Congress.
"The Muslim representative from Minnesota was elected by the voters of that district, and if American citizens don't wake up and adopt the Virgil Goode position on immigration there will likely be many more Muslims elected to office and demanding the use of the Koran," Goode wrote.
Goode said the U.S. needs to stop illegal immigration "totally" and reduce legal immigration.
Goode added: "I fear that in the next century we will have many more Muslims in the United States if we do not adopt the strict immigration policies that I believe are necessary to preserve the values and beliefs traditional to the United States of America and to prevent our resources from being swamped."
Ellison was born in Detroit and converted to Islam in college. He did not immediately return a telephone message left Wednesday.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations, a civil rights group, called on Goode to apologize for the letter.
"Representative Goode's Islamophobic remarks send a message of intolerance that is unworthy of anyone elected to public office," said CAIR National Legislative Director Corey Saylor. "There can be no reasonable defense for such bigotry."
Goode spokesman Linwood Duncan said no apology was forthcoming.
"The only statement the congressman has is that he stands by the letter," Duncan said. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/12/21/politics/main2288161.shtml Is this what America has become? if so..I am wondering if this needs to be changed.. The Statue of Liberty says, 'Send me your poor, your sick, your tired, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,'"
to..
'Send me your poor, your sick, your tired, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, unless you are Muslim ??
I am in favor of quota's on immigration but to deny anyone solely based on religion seems ...bigoted to me..
course I guess it is ok to elect a bigot to congress...right?

Virgil Goode is also under investigation for his connections to the same defense contractor who bribed former Congressman, now inmate, Duke Cunningham.

Virgil Goode is also under investigation Another falsehood. A group wanting an investigation of him is a far cry from being under investigation. Bob Menendez is under investigation.
As far as the letter is concerned I think both men need to get over themselves.

Untrue, Sponge. Mitchell Wade, the defense contractor convicted of bribing Duke Cunningham indicated he had also bribed Goode and Katherine Harris of Florida -- providing this information was part of his plea agreement. Following this admission, prosecutors began investigating Goode early last year. Their investigation is still pending.

Goode said the U.S. needs to stop illegal immigration "totally" and reduce legal immigration. ...That was part was great.
Taking the oath on a Bible and not the Koran would be a great start to acceptance!

The first lie he'd tell in office would be swearing on the Bible.

Goode tied his illegal immigration comments to Ellison whose is a US citizen and whose family, many of whom are not Muslim, have been in this country for over 100 years.

demanding to use the Quran Right up there with expecting us all to speak Spanish...but I guess if you don't believe in the bible it would just be a farce to use one in the first place. But, considering how many politicians just do it for show already...
Goode said the U.S. needs to stop illegal immigration "totally" and reduce legal immigration. Have to completely agree with that, although not necessarily for the same reason.
He did not immediately return a telephone message left Wednesday. LOL, ok so he is already a typical politician, hiding.
"There can be no reasonable defense for such bigotry." While I do not agree with the generalizations, I do agree that these days it could be cause for concern, and a lot of people will be totally freaked out by this, BECAUSE WE STILL HAVE NO WAY OF KNOWING WHICH ONES ARE SECRETLY TERRORISTS. If we had a definitive way to tell, I believe that having muslims in an advisory capacity would be very beneficial in understanding the best way to fight these terrorists.
The Statue of Liberty says, 'Send me your poor, your sick, your tired, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,'" Even if you read through the whole thing, you won’t see anywhere that it invites anyone to come here, commit crimes, spread hate, and kill people. And what about those who are already here? What happened to them being able to breathe free etc? Me? I screen strangers before I let them near my kids.
to deny anyone solely based on religion seems ...bigoted to me.. When he addressed immigration, he didn’t specify only muslims. More like you twisted it a bit to come up with…
'Send me your poor, your sick, your tired, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, unless you are Muslim ??
Goode tied his illegal immigration comments to Ellison whose is a US citizen and whose family, many of whom are not Muslim, have been in this country for over 100 years. Which I believe is a big part of where he screwed up. Picked on the wrong/inappropriate person. For all he knows, this person may be the key to finishing the war. Even knowing which key words to use/not use could help in negotiations, etc. Maybe the maid forgot to dust his crystal ball LOL

Let's review what our homegrown terrorists look like -- Timothy McVeigh, Olympic Bomber Eric Rudolph, and numerous abortion clinic bombers. Not a homegrown Muslim in the group.

In fact, each one of them except for McVeigh is a God fearing, bible reading Christian.
McVeigh, in a Time interview simply said he "believed in God" and didn't qualify that statement. His father is a devout Roman Catholic.

Why do I suspect those who are outraged at Goode's comments would cheer if his comments were anti semitic?

Do you think I would I cheer if his comments were anti-semitic? Do you think Eastham would cheer?

I'm just guessing here but that could be in reference to the Council on American-Islamic Relations.Thats the way I saw it.

Why do I suspect those who are outraged at Goode's comments would cheer if his comments were anti semitic? I think you'd find that most of the people who are tolerant of one religion they don't necessarily agree with are equally tolerant of others.
And why should swearing on the bible have any particular meaning to anyone who doesn't believe it to be the word of God, such as myself? I've had to do it in a court of law, but given a choice I'd have asked that they just accept my oath. That's what they're doing anyway.

Omar Ahmad Co-Founder of the Council on American-Islamic Relations
"Those who stay in America should be open to society without melting, keeping Mosques open so anyone can come and learn about Islam. If you choose to live here, you have a responsibility to deliver the message of Islam ... Islam isn't in America to be equal to any other faiths, but to become dominant. The Koran, the Muslim book of scripture, should be the highest authority in America, and Islam the only accepted religion on Earth." I'm not saying this Ellison guy keeps that belief but it is something that he should be asked to comment on.

OK....I give...there is NO answer. First we (the US) try to be respectful of all diversities, cultures, and religions. Then we are confronted with a statement like the one posted above by Sponge.

Not all that different from what I was taught as a child growing up in the Roman Catholic faith...that those who weren't Catholics would burn in hell. As long as the Constitution is upheld, and church and state really are kept separate, it's still just rhetoric.

Why do I suspect those who are outraged at Goode's comments would cheer if his comments were anti semitic? I wouldn't cheer if his comments were anti-Christian, either. I'd pretty much only cheer if they were anti-pedophile.

By the way, Members of Congress are not sworn in on the House floor with a Bible. That is a myth. The President is, but not MOC. Often freshmen legislators request a separate, private swearing in ceremony in their offices with their family and constitutents and for a picture in their local newspaper. In those cases, the legislator may or may not use a Bible for the ceremony.

With all the focus on Goode's comments and the election of the first Muslim to Congress, we have all overlooked the election of two Buddhists -- also a first. Here's the link.
