AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (Reuters) -- A Dutch journalist asked an Amsterdam court on Friday to convict him for eating chocolate, saying by doing so he was benefiting from child slavery on cocoa farms in Ivory Coast.
Teun van de Keuken, 35, is seeking a jail sentence to raise consumer awareness and force the cocoa and chocolate industry to take tougher measures to stamp out child labor.
a world boycott of chocolate is being called for....

Bear...please read the women and the Taliban post in the Jokes and Humor thread. Do not mess with our chocolate. You may however, just point us in the direction of the slavers, then stand clear.

Eat your Cadbury's and Hershey bars. This is strictly a boycott of Nestle, not only its chocolate, but baby formula as well.

What an interesting thing to bring up at a Valentines date dinner......
Hey that box of chocolates I gave you today came at the price of a child losing their thumb in a piece of machinery at a sweat factory and another soiling their underwear at the cocoa plantation because they weren't allowed a potty break, so it's really an extraordinary and special gift if you really think about it.

Oh how romantic

Enjoy chocolate with a clear conscience by buying Fair Trade Chocloate .. costs a little more but its for a good cause
http://www.lwr.org/chocolate/
The farmers pool their crops to sell directly to international buyers without relying on middlemen. When the cooperative sells its crop to fair trade buyers, the farmers receive a fair price. Also, the cooperative receives a fair trade premium that is invested in the farming communities—to build wells, fund schools, and provide mobile medical clinics and other benefits.

Under other circumstances I would be outraged by a report like this. However we are talking about chocolate... does a little slavery really hurt that much???
I know straight to hell... that is where I am going.

Along with the rest of us double-standard chocoholics. Well, you'll at least be in good company.

I'm not sure what this journalist meant by "slavery". Why would someone let his child work for no pay? Most likely he refered to low salaries the kids get . No doubt , from civilized point of view the mere fact of employing underaged kids sounds unacceptable. But before boycotting the product, shouldn't we consider the consequences? ( No, not for our frustrated cravings . I'm talking about the children in question.) Remember - they might be the only breadwinners for their families.( It's not unusual for the third world countries . Corporations are hiring children exactly for the reason they can pay them next to nothing , while leaving their parents unemployed. reminds me situation with illegal immigrants in USA.. ) So, all we are going to achieve by our "noble sacrifice" is - more hungry children . Something to think about, isn't it?...
