This week, the House of Representatives passed, by an overwhelming, bipartisan margin of 400-3, a bill to expand federal support for research into biofuels.
Here's the link: http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070208/pl_nm/energy_congress_biofuels_dc
The bill authorizes funding for the Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency.

I am starting to see more commercial driven trucks on the freeway with labels claiming that they are using Biofuel, also recycled oil products.

The UPS fleet has been using natural gas for years. When I worked in DC, there was a gas station on the Hill with a NG pump.

Seems like authorities finally stopped wasting taxpayers' money and focused on worthy matters for change. It is , indeed, frustrating to see the greatest democracy of the world being an oil hostage for some third-world countries ... Seems like a good time to load up on soybeans options...

I am a bit amazed at the low responses on this thread, you would think this would be great news. First of all a congress that cares about what the public wants, and also realizing a need to decrease our "addication", to oil.

Hm, so, is it easy to buy? The fuel that is. How much does it cost to either buy a new vehicle that uses this kind of fuel? Or how much will it cost to switch your vehicle you have now to the new fuel? This is fine and dandy untill the cost of all of it hits you in the butt.

I think its a great thing they've done, as long as they don't just concentrate on one or two approaches, as there are quite a number of alternatives. I myself and quite a few friends run our vehicles and machinery on filtered used vegetable oil and biodiesel we make. Ethanol is not that good a substitute as it takes a lot of energy to make ethanol and it also uses up food crops. But tis easy to grown oil seeds in good quantities and NG is an exceelent thing to use as it produces very little pollution

I would agree, no one approach should win over all others. As far as alternative sources go, I wouldn't want to see any one industry gain control as oil controls the current market.
Biodiesel is quite the burgeoning industry in the US. Engineers are also working on hybrid biodiesel cars.

All the government has to do to accomplish this is to stop SUPPRESSING the alternate fuel choices we already have.

At one time, the government provided much of the funding for the start-up research -- it was the same partnership between government, academia and industry that propelled us to be world leaders in biomedical research. Those basic steps have been thwarted domestically and have flourished abroad. The Swedes are now the world's leaders in wind production, the Japanese lead the Europeans in photovoltaics and the list goes on.
