The Delta Zeta Sorority, the "dizzy DZs we called them at UConn, has DePauw University in an uproar. Apparently, the sorority headquarters, looking at dwindling enrollment, decided to throw out any girl who was insufficiently dedicated to the sorority, so out went anyone overweight and non-white. Of the 12 remaining members of the sorority, half quit in protest.

Rather hard to say that this hasn't always been typical of sororities. One of the reason many choose not to join any of them. They are all little cliques where their own opinions are the only ones that matter. Instead of griping about it, these girls should just make their own, and then invite anyone to join.

When I was in college, the Greek system was starting to make inroads onto campus after a 20 year ban. Why were they banned -- because they were racist, not simply by thought but by action. Some were overtly racist, while others were thrown out of their national organizations for admitting black members. It doesn't seem like too much has changed afterall. Very sad.

Gypsydreamer, er...juzhey...there you go again.
Yes, all fraternities and sororities were forced to leave their houses on campus. No one was allowed to move back until the 1980's. In theory, they could and some did purchase houses off campus -- the university had no control over that. Rush activities were nearly non-existant. Walking around campus you might see someone doing something wierd and know they were doing some pledge ritual, but those sitings were few and far between.
