For the most part, Mother Nature, when left to her own devices, produces nearly equal numbers of male and female births. When this natural balance is disrupted either by accident or design, there are consequences -- increases in violent crime, war and disease. The American Revolution, the French Revolution, the student riots in Paris in the late 1960's are but three world events triggered, in part, by a disperate numbers of men to women.
The situations in both India and China are approaching the breaking point. Both countries have bred a surplus of boys, who as men will struggle to find sexual partners (in countries where marriage is nearly universal) and will find themselves marginalized in society. In 2004, professors at MIT published a study the phenomenom of the "bare branches." In China, the one-child policy "married" centuries old preferences for male children. The result is that there are 23 million (20%) more Chinese men of marriageable age than women. In India, which has a somewhat more liberal two child policy, most major cities are seeing a demographic of 800 girls born for every 1,000 boys.
China and India, economic powerhouses both in possession of nuclear weapons, are already seeing dramatic rises in violent crime.

So pent up frustrations lead to revolutions? That makes sense to me. Hopefully the Chinese will rise up and overthrow the communist party its about time. BTW did you know there are like two to one men over women on this web site (at least there is in my area) ?

It won't be long before Japan gets a wiff of this and starts doing the same thing. They have a negative population growth. Maybe the USA? Europe?
Pretty gross stuff in that article regarding abortion techniques

The situation may be grim, but it is not entirely hopeless. There are alternatives, although some may be detrimental to women. Polyandry--in which a woman is simultaneously married to two or more men--was common in some Asian cultures in the past and the custom could be revived. I suppose that it is possible that Chinese men could begin importing mail order brides although I think that is unlikely given the xenophobic nature of Chinese culture. It is more likely that Chinese men will seek jobs in other countries in hope of meeting women. It is also likely that prostitution--and the attendant STDs--will increase dramatically. It is also likely that the Chinese will take harsh measures to reduce the surplus male population. Male criminals may be subject to execution for even minor crimes, for example, while female criminals will spared and punished by being forced to provide sexual services. I don't know how India will react, but I certainly agree that the potential for strife is quite serious.

RareQuestor, while your comments make sense on paper, we're not seeing in the concrete. In the Girajj area of India the practice is that one girl is married off to a family of brothers. As India has modernized, this particular tribe has had to resort to kidnapping girls from other villages. This area has one of the lowest marriage rates.

I didn't. In the areas of India and China tracked in the "bare branches" and other studies have shown marked increases in violent crime.

Hmm that is exactly what I was thinking. How does this relate historically to the events of the last 10,000 or so years?

Well, if we stick to just India and China, here are but two examples.
Female infanticide has been practiced throughout Indian history. There have been previous periods when femal infanticide was practiced to such an extent that there were very few females present at all. The surplus of men in those periods resulted in inter-tribal, inter-caste, inter-ethnic rivalries.
In China, female infanticide has run through its history. This is from the Book of Songs, dated 1000 BC:
When a son is born Let him sleep on the bed, Clothe him with fine clothes. And give him jade to play with. ...
When a daughter is born, Let her sleep on the ground, Wrap her in common wrappings, And give her broken tiles for playthings.
In the 1850s in China, the region of Hwi Pai, which had 129 men for every 100 women, was a hotbed of violent crime. The men of Hwi Pai, many of whom had received military training and were unable to find jobs, began to engage in banditry. The bandits of Hwi Pai did not keep to themselves. They confederated with other criminal groups and eventually controlled a large portion of the country.
Let's go elsewhere:
In the 1990's, the government of Singapore noticed a troubling demographic. More men than women with a surplus of men in lower income positions. The demographic change was accompanied by an increase in violent crime. The government's solution was to engage in a huge advertising campaign to encourage middleclass women to "marry down."

Not gonna happen in Singapore. They cane you for spitting on the sidewalk. Besides, what the government is promoting there are stable families, which they believe is the "cure" for the increased crime associated with lower-income unmarried men.

The book that came out in 2004 (just about China) is called Bare Branches. The most recent piece about India was a paper presented at a scientific meeting, subsequently published in a specialty journal. I'd try to get my hands on a copy of the book first.
