Saw the ads for teachers on the subway last night. On the bottom of the posters it said:
NYC Department of Education, an affirmative action/equal opportunity employer.
How can it be both?

How can it be both? It can't. Fortunately voters in this state have done away with it.

From the web site of the Department of labor
The Department of Labor's Employment Standards Administration's Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) enforces the Executive Order 11246, as amended; Section 503 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended and the affirmative action provisions (Section 4212) of the Vietnam Era Veterans' Readjustment Assistance Act, as amended. Taken together, these laws ban discrimination and require Federal contractors and subcontractors to take affirmative action to ensure that all individuals have an equal opportunity for employment, without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability or status as a Vietnam era or special disabled veteran. http://www.dol.gov/esa/regs/compliance/ofccp/aa.htm And from the EEOC web site
Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (Title VII), which prohibits employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin; t he Equal Pay Act of 1963 (EPA), which protects men and women who perform substantially equal work in the same establishment from sex-based wage discrimination;
the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 (ADEA), which protects individuals who are 40 years of age or older;
Title I and Title V of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA), which prohibit employment discrimination against qualified individuals with disabilities in the private sector, and in state and local governments;
Sections 501 and 505 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, which prohibit discrimination against qualified individuals with disabilities who work in the federal government; and . http://www.eeoc.gov/facts/qanda.html Looks like they have a lot more in common

And how is it "equal opportunity" when minorities get all the advantages just for being minorities? I don't see any equality there.

If I ever need brain surgery, I want the surgeon who got into med school based on his own abilities rather than the surgeon who got in based on a quota.

And how is it "equal opportunity" when minorities get all the advantages just for being minorities? I don't see any equality there. Not sure about where you live but when I drive past the unemployment offices I see an equal distribution of races, but you know what, I will agree Affirmative action doesn't benefit everyone. But how else would the scales have been leveled. America has a long history of racism, and maybe this is a way to settle things. Speaking for myself, I think the person that is qualified to do the job should get the job, but we all know there have been many cases where that has not been true.
Look at the military during World War Two, many blacks wanted to fight for their country, there was no color concerned, they felt it their duty as Americans yet, many of them were not allowed to fight in battle, instead dig trenches. Canada had the right idea, they saw beyond those color lines and allowed black to integrate into their army and navy.. So maybe the idea isn't on the right course, but it is a start, hopefully one day we won't need either Affirmative or EEOC laws, anyone disagree with that?

After watching my sister struggle to raise 5 kids on almost no money I thought an income based affirmative action would be acceptable but my niece proved that income isn't a barrier by winning a scholarship to Western Michigan university.
The costs are still high but she did get in and she did it on her own merit.

That is the topic
affirmative action/equal opportunity =Discrimination
Affirmative Action applies and is directed to racial minorities. (there's no point to beating around the bush).
Equal Opportunity generally applies to both racial minorities and women.
I don't believe that women are a minority because they make up over 50% of the population (talk about an Oxymoron)
Ahh, there. There's your oxymoron....women being work place minorities.
Anyway is the topic about oxymoron comparisons
(deleted my secondary comment based on inaccuracy) Apologies to the OP for the deleted remarks.

Anyway is the topic about oxymoron comparisons or once again about the thing which you are perceived to like taking about most. The topic is clearly displayed in the first post. I trust it is short enough for you to read.
As far as to what I like to talk about the most, you tell me what it is. Wait! I know! Must be racism because I started this one thread about affirmative action and about 10 other ones about different subjects.
Must be racism because I posted in 2 threads about racial issues and in about 100 other threads about various other issues.
Furthermore, I must be a goddamn good racist as I didn't even know KKK had a website until your colleague pointed me towards it.
It's hilarious how when I said that a white person is completely forbidden from exercising the same First Amendment (that all the minorities like to exploit to hell and back) when it comes to racial issues or have a label of racist attached immediately. Those who were freakin' outraged by that comment were the first to, oh yeah, cry racism.
I think you are quite pathetic. People like you or midnightthunder who have nothing better to do but carry racial microspcopes around I have no sympathy for. You can call me what you want, I really don't care. I mean, it would be like wondering what a mosquito on the wall thinks of me.

I know the presidents' chief advisor, we were at MIT together. And, at this point in time, you really don't want to take advice from a man who got a C minus in astrophysics. The presidents' advisors are wrong. I am right. Affirmative Action does have it's bright side for an otherwise rascist system. General Colin Powell got his comission and first star from it and he is a damn fine man and was and awesome war time leader back in the Gulf War.
EEOC is good but doesn't cover small companies so didn't do me squat when I got canned for using my companies insurance back in '04.
Mary's right, though. Affirmative Action is bogus PC horse manure.
