LOL go figure. I know tommy can and will work well with the democrats in office. He had to in wisconsin, it always made me giggle, reblican gov, everything else the other side, and that just the way we kept it.More important then having balance i think is having a balance willing to work together....

I just read tommy thompson's bio on his web site. There is more research that I want to do, but he looks good so far, unfortunately, he might be too good for the rest of his party to allow to close to the whitehouse

I thought this was about Fred Thompson of Tennessee (originally).. Now starring on Law & Order.

If he does indeed decide to run, I'd suggest he has a VERY good chance. Repubs are very excited about the possibilities. He pretty much overshadows anybody in the field. Tommy Thompson, I don't know for sure about his chances. Seems he did pretty well as the Sec'ty of HHS when I was hanging out up DC way, at one point..

As for the Dems I think their best bet might be John Edwards and possibly General Wesley Clark as a running mate. I can't really see Hillary or Obama enduring the long-term fire-storm. But at some point Edwards needs to merge more into the public eye. Although it's quite early yet.

I would have to disagree about Fred Thompson's chances. Much has been written about the decline in power of the religious right to win and election; however the professional pollsters of all political stripes do believe that the Christian Right does have a good deal of power to block a nomination, especially in key southern states. Many of the Christian Right, including Dobson, who put out voter guides and work hard on GOTV efforst have come out against Thompson, who isn't even an official candidate.

My guess is that Fred Thompson will not run.

As to Tommy Thompson, he had a very mixed tenure as HHS Secretary. Many decisions at FDA were politicized when they didn't need to be, including stem cell research and women's health; the Medicare drug benefit has been a fiasco; and he spent a good part of his first few months at HHS complaining he wanted Transportation. Other than ego, I can't see why Tommy Thompson thinks he has a chance.

I hope Fred Thompson doesn't run. If he does TNT and NBC will have to pull Law & Order to compy with the FEC.

Pull Law and Order????

Say it ain't so!

I don't think Fred Thompson will run, and Dobson seems to have made it his personal goal in life to sink Fred's ship. But then who does the religious right like in the current field? Thompson could probably pull a lot of fast interest and even some dollars, but I just don't think he could sustain it. In any event, he spent almost twenty years as a washington lobbyist--I'm not sure that's the mindset we need any more of right now.

Wes Clark is a decent guy, but he's never pulled above 4% in the polls this year. He's not even mentioned in most of them. He's playing coy with the press right now as to whether or not he'll run, but if he waits much longer ( more than a month or two) he'll be so disadvantaged with money, with the big Super Primary days coming up, that what's the point? But I bet he's thinking he'd make an attractive Veep choice because of his military history.

Right now, I'm waiting to see Obama's first quarter donation numbers...

Other than ego, I can't see why Tommy Thompson thinks he has a chance.

Trust me, Cheryl-having had to endure ten of his 14 years as governor of a state that proudly produced the greatness of Bob LaFollette, Frank Zeidler, Golda Meir, and Gaylord Nelson-Tommy "Stick it to 'em" Thompson needs nothing other than his ego to convince himself that he can get elected president...actually, if he would have ran prior to 2000, I would have voted for him-JUST TO GET HIM THE HELL OUT OF WISCONSIN!! But since he's now a private citizen, I have no such ethical dilemmas.

I wonder how the right will spin it if/when he shows up at a public function slurring drunk, such as he did in front of almost 20,000 people at Lambeau Field for "Return to Titletown II," after the Packers lost Super Bowl XXXII? I was there, and I'll never forget the inherent leadership in his demeanor as he proudly proclaimed, "...an' nexsh year, we're goin' all thaa way to Miaaaammi!"

And Shorti, you must not have lived in Milwaukee-'cause it was bad!

I think the Fred Thompson wave, if it ever were to get started, could very easily roll over Washington and knock aside all the obstacles. His charisma, though difficult to identify exactly, is unmatched by anyone else the right has. The problem being of course he has yet to decide he wants to run, at least officially. His history as a Watergate prosecutor is still quite present in a lot of people's minds though. However a lot of people are saying that it is really too early for him to commit anyway, and they may be right.

Obama and HIllary having gotten into the fray very early will very likely be their demise. I doubt if either of those two will end up with the nomination. As for the Repubs I don't see too much out there other than Romney, and something about him kinda give one the willies. I don't think McCain has any chance left at all. And I don't feel he should have either. He'd likely be an awful president and he's far too much of a Bush clone. Now some are starting to talk about Jeb Bush.. Yetch!! If another Bush EVER gets in there I'm moving to Australia!!.

Funny how they drafted Condi for that role, and now she's not even in the running. Thankfully!! And neither is Gingrich, thankfully!

Steve--

And for the short time I was still in DC when Thompson was HHS secretary, he had already developed quite a reputation as having a good case of Potomac Fever, what can be discreetly called a bit of a zipper problem.
