I watched a documentary on the Westboro Baptists. (had never heard of them before ) Louis is the filmaker ..
They call themselves the most hated family in the US and they picket funerals of soldiers killed in Iraq. So what did Louis Theroux make of the Phelpses after three weeks?
The Phelps family pickets mourners across the country, to mark what it describes as God's revenge on the US for tolerating homosexuality.
Their actions are in the name of the Westboro Baptist Church, which numbers 71 and is headed by "Gramps", preacher Fred Phelps. The church, which is based in Topeka, Kansas, mostly comprises his extended family.
Louis Theroux, himself no stranger to people with unconventional views, says the Phelpses are the most extreme people he has ever met. Louis Theroux: They're well known because of these pickets which they've been doing for at least 15 years now. The pickets weren't always of soldiers' funerals, but it got more extreme as it went on. Originally it started as pickets of places where gay people congregated - a local park becoming a cruising area which they objected to, and then when Aids came along they said it was punishment for homosexuality and they began picketing Gay Pride parades and marches and also then the funerals of people who died of Aids. I respect other people beliefs but they seemed to behave in a way which I could not comprehend ... they said 9/11 was a cleansing .... celebrate tsunami .... called Princess Diana a fag enabler .... etc etc they celebrate when people die of cancer and are in accidents

What else do you tackle in the film?
What we're trying to do in the documentary is look at an activity that is so antisocial, so strange, so futile and at its worst, so cruel, and we're saying "Why? Why do that?", especially when you seem to be, for the most part, kind and sensitive people. We're exploring what is cruelty, trying to explain how something that really does very often just amount to cruelty could be perpetuated and passed down in a family. Why would nice people do such horrible things?

Yes, I think we do. I think that the pastor is not a very nice person. I think he's an angry person who's twisted the Bible and picked and chosen verses that support his anger, that sort of justify his anger, and he's instilled that in his children and they've passed it on to their children. Although the second and third generation are by and large quite nice people from what I saw, they still live under the influence of their Gramps.

the amazing thing is someone somewhere is subsidizing these people, they fly all over the country, how can their families afford it? a church with 79 members doesn't have the resources for the legal battles they have launched across the country...
someone somewhere with deep pockets is footing the bills

Geez...when will these idiots leave gay people alone!!!!  Gays have been through enough in their lives! I had a cousin who was gay, died of AIDS, and he DID NOT deserve to die!

Dig a little deeper on the net Grumble. Westboro Baptist Church is part of a bigger scam. The Phelps family has a law firm, it's called Phelps Law Chartered. The scam they run is that the "church" does something outragous, like picket a funeral, in hopes of being arrested or run out of town by the local authorities. If they are succesful at being arrested, the family law firm then sues in federal court claiming their 1st amendment rights of free speech were denied and attempts to get a big cash settlement from whatever local govt is involved. They had several suits going against the city of Topeka (where the supposed church is located ) last time I looked.
BTW they showed up here in Minden NV to protest a funeral, and the local people wouldn't let them within a half a mile of the funeral, so they tried to get the Douglas County Sheriff to give them an escort through the crowd. Of course they were too busy for that.

I saw one of the daughters of Fred Phelps on TV, I've never seen such a rabid person on tv before, but someone someplace is subsidizing them beyond just their law firm...
there are private foundations that do donate to these hatemongers

I just checked, Westboro Baptist does not accept any contributions from outsiders, all of their money comes from the family law firm. You can read about it here....

I think most of their money comes from lawsuits that result from getting themselves arrested. After the Southern Poverty law center made a stink about them working for the Gore campaign, Gore wisely dumped them. I think they sued and lost that one.

Generations of hate mongering that espouses hating everyone different than them. ~shiver~ Indocrination from cradle, spoonfed venom, personal interpretation of doctrin, hmmm, sounds like radical fundamentalism being utilized in other parts of the world. These are the kind of people that prove that fanatics respect no boundary. I wonder if they qualify under the antiterrorist guidlines?

They were in Michigan awhile back, my idea was to schedule a date, have them fly in, and post pone the funeral for a couple of days...........only to find the funeral was the day before they arrived.......do that a couple of times. Oh yeah, and run them over with a truck, don't kill em, just enough to watch them squirm ......................a.....lot....and Oh by the way, protest around them so the medics can't get near them..................you know............to express our free speech.

they should not even come close to putting themselves in the ranks of christians. ANYONE who teaches hate in the name of jesus is no christian.
Ours job as christians is not to hate others but to teach and allow God to lay judgement.

So means the majority of the world is going to hell  as they are either a fag or an enabler ...
they seemed all quite normal .... but once they talked about religion they were almost .... obsessed
