Yes I have been following it and it is a great tragedy for both the University and for this country. My prayers are extended to all those affected by this outrage.

I don't understand how this guy could have done that. Did he have military training? Over thirty dead and over twenty wounded--it's darn hard to shoot 50+ people within a few minutes. And he was apparently found with two pistols? Very unusual...and incredibly tragic.

The massacre took place at opposite sides of the 2,600-acre campus, beginning at about 7:15 a.m. at West Ambler Johnston, a coed dormitory that houses 895 people, and continuing at least two hours later at Norris Hall, an engineering building about a half-mile away, authorities said.
From what I've read so far, there was no lockdown and no information spread to students about what was going on in those two hours...it sounds like it ended up being a lot more tragic than it needed to be, but that's just the early information.

Also there's the fact that he killed at least one person almost two hours earlier yet managed to come back and kill so many more.

I do not mean to sound flip or to downplay this tragedy at all but have you never heard the expression "like shooting ducks in a barrel". He walked into a classroom crowed with students and opened fire with 2 semi automatic weapons. I would almost have to say it would be hard to miss at close range and remember he was standing in the door so there was no way out.

In two hours could they not have 'locked down' the campus so the second round didn't happen?

Unicersity security and the local police were on the scene at the dormitory and felt that there was no reason to lock down the campus since they believed the gunman had left the campus which he may very well have. Remember the other event was over 2 hours later on the other side of the campus and in classrooms rather than a dormitory. I have heard all the talk about why the campus was not locked down after the first shooting and IMHO the police on the scene took appropriate actions. Time will of course reveal exactly what happened and who is right and I have always thought it was very easy for others to second guess people who are up close and personally involved.

I just saw on our news service, that the local cops decided the first shooting was just a local singular event. So the cops decided to do nothing and didn't stop classes, or warn the students of what had happened. Seems like a few brain dead cops and school officials in that place. I really think your country should try to find out why these school shootings are becoming so prevalent. It must get to the stage where the young will feel very scared about going to school, which will really effect their academic life and future.
Such a terrible waste of life.

It must get to the stage where the young will feel very scared about going to school, which will really effect their academic life and future. But they aren't becoming so prevalent. There are absolutely too many (i.e., more than 0) taking place, but school shootings are statistically rare in our nation of 300,000,000 people. The problem is with the media, overdramatizing these tragedies and spreading fear. We usually see an increase in school shootings, a/k/a copycat effect, for some time after the media latches onto a tragedy like this.

First of all we don't have all the facts. Second of all, 2 hours may seem like a long time, but locking down a campus also takes time. It takes time for the cops to arrive. It takes time for the cops to figure out what happened. On a campus that big, the shooter may have very well walked over with guns hidden under his jacket without anyone noticing him. By the time they figured out the first shooting, the second started.
It's always so easy to blame the police. We take lessons in that daily from Sharpton and the like. I'm very sorry to inform you that cops are only human and can do only what is humanly possible.
So howzabout for ONCE putting the blame where it belongs -- with the fkn shooter and leaving the police alone until the facts are in?

The problem is with the media, overdramatizing these tragedies and spreading fear. Few things are local anymore. Things were a lot different in the days when all national and international news came from a half hour of Conkrite. These days we have 24/7 coverage with nothing for them to talk about so we get California car chases until something like this comes up.
These things have always been a sad reality but it's a simple fact. In 1927 Andrew Kehoe blew up a school in Bath Michigan killing mostly children. It probably made national news but there were no hours of interviews with victims families or analysts.

Yeah, I'm waiting for them to identify the shooter and start in on his difficult childhood and then start pounding on the police for "not doing their jobs".
Welcome to liberal media...
