Anyone surprised? The only surprise to me is how long they managed to cover it up.

BJ..please don't get too excited by this developement..as...
... part of the deal under negotiation, Chevron, which now owns Texaco, is not expected to admit to violating the U.N. sanctions. But Chevron is expected to acknowledge that it should have been aware that illegal kickbacks were being paid to Iraq on the oil, the investigators said.
The fine is connected to the payment of about $20 million in surcharges on tens of millions of barrels of Iraqi oil bought by Chevron from 2000 to 2002, investigators said.
These payments were made by small oil traders that sold oil to Chevron. But records found by United Nations, American and Italian officials showed that they were financed by Chevron.
The negotiations, which might take several weeks to conclude, follow an agreement reached in February by El Paso, the largest operator of American natural gas pipelines, to pay the United States government $7.73 million to settle allegations that it was involved in illegal payments under the oil-for-food program. fines only mean one thing..(IMHO) money to the government to use in a slush fund as it is new money that they now have access to spend.. ..I want jail time for corporate heads and no fines..
.further..how do you think these multi national corps get the money to pay these fines... yes..from you and me at the pumps...just the cost of doing business...

Yep, these guys will only think of it as the cost of doing business unless they are prosecuted.

My thinking when I read this was how the U.N. was crucified over the corruption there, regarding the program. Wonder how many will crucifiy the oil companies? Or the CEO's that helped them do it (including the ones in high government positions)?

And if I remember correctly, George Galloway and several other members of the British Parliament and some charity organizations were also accused of profitting from the oil for food program. Turned out to be false accusations (if I remember correctly the accusations were made by Norm Coleman of MN).

In Australia, our monopoly privately controlled wheat board paid hundreds of millions to Iraq as kick backs for buying our wheat, below world prices. There was a big fuss, but when it began to get close to the politicians and senior bureaucrats, it was stopped even though they have found other corrupt practises in other areas as well. But like the USA, these companies provide funds for politicians, so that's who they represent, not the people.

Stupid. We should just be taking the oil. They owe it to us by now.

Funny how the people who didn't want to talk about it when I posted about the corruption in the oil for food scandal months ago, find an interest in it now.
Once again proving that you don't want change, just power.

Once again proving that you don't want change, just power Funny how you want to talk about it yourself, only if it is about the people you want it to be about.

Anyone surprised? The only surprise to me is how long they managed to cover it up. Crime is equal opportunity. If these companies were involved, then heads should roll. I do detect a note of self-loathing of America in this though.
I do make the following observation; The folks at the U.N. who got away with criminal behavior and who skated without so much as a conviction over stealing ten billion or more dollars are still walking around free. While all the participants like U.S. companies and others should be prosecuted, the real criminals in the U.N. power elite should have been barbecued. Instead, they flaunted the law and ethical conduct.
What could be a better case for putting an end to the corrupt and self-serving U.N.? It serves no real purpose anymore and certainly is an embarrassment to itself.

I loath the lies and corruption.
I also loath the fact that some people try to turn this into another "anti american" situation.
You seem to feel like the crime is greater from the U.N. The crime is the same and they should ALL be punished.
