I don't cut my son much slack and I certainly don't bring him up as a sissy... But had this happened in his school, these same teachers would be facing a REAL gun. Mine.
Are these people completely out of their freakin' minds or what? Hope the parents sue them into oblivion.
Teachers stage fake gun attack on kids
Sun May 13, 5:28 PM ET
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Staff members of an elementary school staged a fictitious gun attack on students during a class trip, telling them it was not a drill as the children cried and hid under tables.
The mock attack Thursday night was intended as a learning experience and lasted five minutes during the weeklong trip to a state park, said Scales Elementary School Assistant Principal Don Bartch, who led the trip.
"We got together and discussed what we would have done in a real situation," he said.
But parents of the sixth-grade students were outraged.
"The children were in that room in the dark, begging for their lives, because they thought there was someone with a gun after them," said Brandy Cole, whose son went on the trip.
Some parents said they were upset by the staff's poor judgment in light of the April 16 shootings at Virginia Tech that left 33 students and professors dead, including the gunman.
During the last night of the trip, staff members convinced the 69 students that there was a gunman on the loose. They were told to lie on the floor or hide underneath tables and stay quiet. A teacher, disguised in a hooded sweat shirt, even pulled on locked door.
After the lights went out, about 20 kids started to cry, 11-year-old Shay Naylor said.
"I was like, 'Oh My God,' " she said. "At first I thought I was going to die. We flipped out."
Principal Catherine Stephens declined to say whether the staff members involved would face disciplinary action, but said the situation "involved poor judgment."

That is just plain wrong. I hope the parents do pursue a complaint to the nth degree. When Columbine happened, my boys were in high school. They had a threat called in-I got my kids, but they weren't scared, ticked off because they had to miss basketball practice. I do believe they would have been scared s***less if a drill would have been handled like that. And that's wrong. You can developement an emergency plan without the dramatics.

I'll bet the lawyers are already lining up to sue that school district, like sharks smelling blood in the water.

WOW, now that's very fascinating to read.
I wonder if it will become a national trend?

I guess someone thought it was an extension of the fire drill concept. Except that in a fire drill you take action to save your life. If this drill had involved unlocking the mini-armory in every class and handing out Ruger 10/22s to the kids (who had, of course, received training during PsyEd) then I can see some value to it. But all they learned was how to lie on the floor and wait to be killed. That doesn’t sound very helpful.
I agree that someone’s head should roll over this.

they should all be fired. You can't "prepare" someone that young for an experience like that. That was stupid.

Extremely bad form!!
You teach children what to do in a situation like this...you don't do it to them.
I'm not a sueing person, but in this case, the school would be putting my child through college...and beyond!

OMG!!! Sorry, but I just had to laugh out loud at the mental picture of the entire school board if they dared try crap like that here. I am a very involved and outspoken parent, and boy howdy do they know my name and face. Considering that in the past, I actually scared a head teacher into wetting herself with my response to her thinking she could even touch my kid (no, I never even touched the cow)...well, I can only imagine the terror these people would feel where I have more civilized laws to work with. Sure wouldn't be the first time a school employee found themselves on the wrong side of a courtroom because of me hehehehehehe
Oh man, perhaps would also be doing my research and making some phone calls, and then those involved might have a little "drill" of their own, late at night, in their own homes, ...

They were just trying to prepare kids for what they will face on the streets.
Back when I was a kid, we had a bloody chainsaw massacre freak running around summer camp every year. No one got sued.

I think an extra month of summer vacation will serve these teachers right!! Give them some time to think about how they've acted.

kjack - Private school maybe, but home-schooling is an unmonitored joke founded by irrational people who wish to pervert the truth in the name of religion and politics. Dayum your an idiot if you truly believe this. TRUTH is, that kids who are home schooled are generally a lot further ahead in their studies. The only thing that a public school give that home school doesn't is experience dealing with other kids, good or bad.
As far as private schools, no better or worse generally than public, but they do have a lot more "shady" occurrences because they work so hard to keep a good public image, so they can keep getting parents to bring their kids, and checkbooks, to them.
Tried all 3 ways with my youngest at one time or another. Homeschool she learned a heck of a lot more in far less time. Private schools she was mostly USED for promotional stuff (ok, yeah, she was a little "cover baby" ick and yuck) Public Schools, nothing but sick and disgusting having to deal with the skanky freaks she sits in class with. Constantly horrified by what goes on there "socially", and wonder how they ever learn anything, although it isn't really much, and next to nothing that will actually be used in day to day living. E.G. Last science project. If you put three bananas in the refrigerator, 3 on the counter wrapped in plastic wrap, and three left out without the wrap, how many bruises will each get in a week? (Is anyone else able to find any kind of valuable lesson in this for anything but a produce clerk?)
