You have two cars:

1. is a Toyota

2. is a G.M. product

Both are made from parts from all over the world.

Car #1 is assembled in a plant in the USA (Indiana, I think)

Car #2 is assembled in Mexico

Which car is more American?

My position is that the Toyota is more American, because it's built by American labor, in America.

My friends' position is that the GM car is more American, because GM is an American compny, and it doesn't matter where it was built or who built it.

What say you?

Toyota also has some of the most reliable cars according to consumer reports and for people who are struggling to get by, reliability is high on the list of things to look for in a car.

... I think they are the same... IMO to be called an american made car, it has to be produced and totally made in america.. from the begining to the end...

Both are made from parts from all over the world.

says it all....

You're not telling me anything I don't already know. I live along what used to be an industrial powerhouse known as the I-94 corridor in Michigan. We used to make just about every imaginable car part across the area. Today it's welfare, restaurants, and retail.

By your definition, there are no "real" American cars anymore. Nor are there any Japanese, Korean, German, etc. cars. Cars, trucks. and motorcycles are all world products now. That means that all that "buy American" hoopla means nothing, since that Harley-Davidson, for example, may have more parts from China than America in it.

since I'm american which ever car I'm sitting in I consider american. okay, bad attempt at humor.

In the whole nascar field many consider toyota as an outsider and can't stand the fact they are in the sport, but as in your example they are made in KY. so the parts might not be american made but the labor is.

I could care less personally, if I like the truck( since I don't care for cars) I buy it no matter who makes it.

Anything that can be manufactured, lately has been sent overseas to kill unionism and employee benefits as well as gaining end item purchase contracts from governments of the countries where the work is being offloaded to (favor exchange, you buy a percentage of our finished product and we will build you parts manufacturing facilities and grant you jobs to escalate your GNP and economies).

Trade Deficits?

Actually the GM would be the most American because it is owned by a united states company and built in a central American country. So it is American owned and American built. Mexicans are Americans too. BTW there are three Americas exactly which one are you referring to? And if it is north America aren't Canadians north Americans as well? Better to be a bit more specific and say United States of America. The US holds no patents on being American.

^ Good Point some of my Canadian friends think that it is arrogant to refer to the U.S. all the time as "Americans" and refer to Candians or even Mexicans for that matter as something other than American, even though we all live on the North American continent.
When he told me that, I decided from that point on (3 years ago) that I was going to refer to my country, the United States, by its name and not just plain ole America (it's pretty lame to generalize the U.S.A. in that way for that matter).
Yeah, yeah, yeah...there is also a South America.

The buy american movement is still relevant, maybe not so much when it comes to cars, but there are other products you can buy which are still made in the U.S. to support U.S. citizen workers and open up more jobs for them.

ok first on subject. I think toyota has as much right to be called american made because it is assembled by american workers which gives americans jobs not taking away from them.
second off topic we have been americans as long as anyone can remember, I don't remember canada being the canadian provinces of america, or mexico being the mexian states of america, we are the only north american country that has america in its name that makes us americans

Bryan, it's the dumb rednecks that confuse America (which happens to be a continent in the northern hemisphere), with The United States of America which is in fact a country. They use the term loosely and generically (let's just say....... in an uneducated manner).
Some of those imbeciles think that northern and southern United States should be separate countries. They also think that Africa is a country too.

One should choose their words wisely when they speak in public.... it reflects their educational status.

careful striving. first you use the term redneck like it was a bad thing. we must be using different definitions. But I won't get into that.
secondly your pretty much stating that the majority or Americans are wrong in calling themselves that and have been for oh 200 yrs. oh and that includes foreign countries also, I'm pretty sure if you go to for example germany and say american they are going to refer to a US citizen not a mexican or canadian or south american.
Now then back on topic, I still say that a vehicle built in the US by Americans is more of an American car than one assembled in a foreign country

LOL I win! Mine is more American. 1969 Chevelle!

But hey, thanks for the laugh mixing up Americans, North Americans and South Americans. Anyone knows which means what, but there sure are a lot who like to pretend otherwise. Just plain wrong to say something like "Mexicans are American". More properly, they are "South Americans". Yeah, overseas, and especially in South America, it is a big pet peeve of their's the way we "yanks" use the term American the way we do, excluding them from the reference. Oh well, kinda like our english isn't the same as it is in England, or even Canada for that matter eh? LOL

When you buy the Toyota the money ultimately ends up in Japan. It is time to realize that whether we like it or not, we live in a global economy.
The Victory motorcycle is percentage-wise, more American than the HD. There by setting standards rather chasing them.
