Obviously, America is fed up with the system in place as a whole. But they are also fed up with Bush's war in Iraq. That being said, would ending the war help their approval rating? That is, after all, the stance a lot of them got elected on. Or has America simply grown tired of both parties lying, cheating, and stealing from the American people?

kjac - if they do ANYTHING that they promised when elected it will help - the polls say the primary reason for the low ratings lack of unity and squabbling - GRIDLOCK!

How is this Bush's war? That is made from a purely contorted view of the facts, which is where so many people are these days. Yeah lets just call any war the name of who ever is the leader of said country at the time that this war is being waged. So I guess you know all about Nimrod's war too?

Clinton and Edwards and others voted to give Bush what he asked for. They weren't asking for it. It's Bush's war.
And I think ending the war would minimally improve Congess' approval rating, kjac. Right now, there has been so much mud slung on both sides, they people really are convinced there isn't an honest soul in Washington (and who can blame them?). I don't think this Congerss' approval rating or the next will get much above 40% at best, and I think that's wishful thinking.

We're there right now because Bush wants us there. 70% of America doesn't want the war, but he does. Who else's war would it be? No one else was whining desperately in Cleveland begging to give the war more time. That wasn't Clinton, it wasn't Edwards, it was Bush.
As for the actual topic of the thread, I think ending the war would help signifigantly, since a vast portion of America disapproves of this war. But I think there would still be some underlying resentment. I think America has grown tired of both parties looking out for only themselves. If ever there was a time for a legitimate third party candidate, that time would be now.

How is this Bush's war? For once, I agree with you.
This is not just Bush's war. It is the war of anyone who voted for it.
They can't tell me they didn't know the facts. They knew the WMD charge was a lie. They knew Iraq had nothing to do with 9-11. They knew the uranium charge was false. They had all that information.
With a lot of research, I had those facts. You can believe they ALL had them too! They certainly had a lot more information about them than I could get from the net and other places.
The American people have to take some responsibility here too, in my opinion. They cheered for it, they supported it and they called the ones of us who didn't, traitors and everything else. They did a good job of selling their lies. They even had the churches flying flags and putting up signs to support it.
The accountability for it though, needs to start at the TOP. Thats where the Buck stops...................
They are NOT going to stop the war, until the oil contracts are signed and solid and they have control of the oil and the country.

bj - you are a sensible liberal - My admiration - most take no responsibility for anything - You probably know that Billary voted against the Levin Amendment that would have forced Bush to wait for approval before attacking - Most liberals seem to brush that off like it did not happen - yet it is in the Congressional Record for all to see! That was AFTER she voted for the war!
It is nice talking to you here - and I agree - Bush is accountable now - You never hear him try to blame it on anyone else! He stands up like a man!
I really do think he will announce a phase out in September and snooker the Dems!

That is, after all, the stance a lot of them got elected on. Or has America simply grown tired of both parties lying, cheating, and stealing from the American people? Oh, no doubts at all! Although the latter is also true. Americans are getting tired of the squabbling and indecision that goes on there. But back to the original question, their ratings would soar if they found a way to do it, because that is indeed what they were elected to do in 2006. And they do need to step up to the plate.
As for who voted for the war, or who didn't, there was an enormous amount of coercion that went on back then. And while I don't think some that voted for it should have, they were being spoon-fed a great deal of false information and endured some very high-pressure tactics at the hands of this administration. So we cannot remove the responsibility for the war from those who started it and had every intention to do so. America as a whole felt largely that the war was justified at the time. We can't blame Congress for agreeing, all of course in retrospect.

Reid's New Strategy
Harry Reid will be keeping the Senate in session tonight until a vote is taken on the Reed-Levin amendment. Given the recent pronoucements by Voinivich and other Republicans that Bush is f*&cking up the war (Voinivich's words), then it will be time for them to put up or shut up.

Then hopefully this thread will be answered shortly. I don't hold out hope though. There would have to be quite a few republicans with morals to overturn a Bush veto.

eastham - this is a new zogby poll - article on the Drudge report -
Eighteen months before Bush leaves the White House, nearly two-thirds of Americans say the country is headed in the wrong direction and give the president negative marks for his job performance.
An even bigger majority, 83 percent, say the Democratic-controlled Congress is doing only a fair or poor job -- the worst mark for Congress in a Zogby poll.
But despite their dim views of government, majorities of Americans remain upbeat about their personal finances and security, and nearly two-thirds are very or fairly confident their children will have a better life than they do.

majorities of Americans remain upbeat about their personal finances and security, and nearly two-thirds are very or fairly confident their children will have a better life than they do I don't get this scenerio from anyone I know. Most of the people I know are having trouble paying their astronomical real estate taxes and house insurance here in Florida. They are also having a hard time with gasoline and groceries. Our electric bills are 3 times higher than they used to be.
I am really concerned about what kind of future my kids (grown) are going to have.

bj - not our fault that people are over extended! Our Country is the most prosperous in the history of mankind! Families have 2-3 cars - 4-5 televisions - computers - and home ownership is the highest ever - this includes minority home ownership - And of course personal debt is out of the roof - people make their own choices!
I have traveled throughout the world - no other country lives like Americans. Our housing projects are equal to the way most live elsewhere!

I have traveled throughout the world - no other country lives like Americans. I really wondered about that statement. I've done a fair amount of travelling myself, and I don't think I'd say that, truth be told. I googled quality of life, because I don't believe money's everything, and I have to admit I was surprised that we're not even number one in GDP per capita, Luxembourg is. In fact, we ranked 13th in overall quality of life (which factors in a bunch of different things, listed on the site below, as well as the index that I was looking at). I already knew about Italy and health care - they're so far out there, they not only have low cost, high quality care available, but their doctors make HOUSE CALLS! I usually get 'go visit the first care clinic' if I need a same day appointment.
Quality of life Index
Back on topic - Congress needs a lot more than ending the war in Iraq to raise their approval rating - poor overall security, digging deep into what's driving up health costs, cleaning house at FEMA (12.5 million bucks of melted ice?????? C'mon guys!)...there's plenty to do besides just talk and nobody seems to be doing a thing.

bj - not our fault that people are over extended! Sorry to burst your bubble, but what I was talking about has nothing to do with people being overextended.
Everything has gone up 100 to 300%. Groceries, gas, real estate, real estate taxes, house insurance, medical insurance and all other goods and services.
That has been a direct result of the governments policies my friend.
I have a lot less and it cost me a lot more. Maybe you can find an answer for that.
By the way, I don't see anything changing the approval ratings of either Bush or the congress right now. Even if they manage to end the war (which I doubt), look at the above statements and you will see why people are getting angrier and angrier. It has become impossible to make ends meet for millions of people.

The popularity of Congress is worse than the popularity of the President.
And when Hillary Pelosi gets wound up about some Liberal social-engineering Homosexual activism issue and steps WAY OUT OF LINE, the electorate is going to regurgitate first and then turn right.
Remember, the people on the left whose mantra it is that the USA had NO BUSINESS INVADING IRAQ are saying it was better to leave Saddam Hussein in power as the President of Iraq, with "Mr. WMD" Chemical Allie smiling at his side.
I wish you well my friends.
The "Utopia-American" viewpoint. Good night and good luck.

When I said the Congressional ratings would soar if the war was ended, I didn't mean they would be at all-times highs by any means. I believe they would soar from where they are now, which isn't the least bit impressive, because that would be a very astute accomplishment, unlikely though it is.
There still are many, many other things to be addressed and their job would not be over by a long shot. Many, as already addressed herein.
However, Mr Bush has been saying the last few days that in modern warfare, things like this take "a while", and that it won't be over soon. What he really means is years and years, as speculated upon by several news show panels. I don't think there is any chance at all that this war will be over before he is out of office, at least not if he and Cheney have anything to say about it.
