It came out in the Vet meeting today that one of the housing agencies is denying people access to the waiting list based on their religious beliefs. Apparently, what they are doing is engaging in specific religious 'talking points' in order to determine what the applicants postition is on such things as 'church and state', prayer in schools, church attendance, etc. If the applicant doesn't indicate an acceptance of these issue, they are told that the waiting list is closed. What going to happen next is there is going to be a meeting which will included local officials, pastors, and applicants that have been denied access to this housing. Hopefully, this issue can be resolved with a simple phone call.

This thread seems to be off in the wrong direction already. It started off as just a journal of my thoughts about the day. I was just thinking out loud a little. So I didn't include certain details as there are others to consider in this. I have to worry about naming names without first consulting with the people. I apologize if this makes things difficult for you all here in the forum whom would have preferred these details. Please work with me on this one. I'm trying really I am.

I edit my comments in order to correct spelling errors, which there are a lot, and for clarity. But unfortunately I can't edit the original post for some reason. However, in re-reading it I can see a lot of potential points of interest to use in a discussion.

It came out in the Vet groups that I attend there is a possible case of religious discrimination in a housing unit. Veteran's and others are being told that the waiting list is closed, seemingly, based on how they respond to specific talking points. More than one Veteran has stated that the manager of the complex is using these talking points to determine what the potential applicants religious beliefs are. If the applicant doesn't respond in kind using key code phrases that only people of a certain faith would know, they are being told that the waiting list is closed and denied the opportunity to fill out an application.

...Yes, we learn quickly the games that some people play with the "edit" button and from now on, should I respond, I will be posting your original statements to lower the confusion.
Edit for: O:
It came out in the Vet groups that I attend there is a possible case of religious discrimination in a housing unit. ...Finally, it is one manager of one rental unit that was discussed at one small group's meeting and not exactly worthy news for a policy change with the Veteran's Administration.
...I do believe the VA has discrimination addressed in their policy and if your complaint is in fact valid, I would take it up with them. Now, I could believe that the rental manager makes the attempt to locate like ideologies close to each other, as to make compatible neighbors, but even that is not legal.

The Veterans Administration does not have any jurisdiction over this apartment complex it is funded by a state, local, private, or federal source, I don't know which. It's not one rental unit. As far as I know there are no rentals presently available. However, there is a waiting list. Did ya get all that? [Edited on 7/24/2007 6:17 PM]

Housing discrimination based on your race, color, national origin, religion, sex, family status, or disability is illegal by federal law. If you have been trying to buy or rent a home or apartment and you believe your rights have been violated, you can file a fair housing complaint.
There are several ways to file a complaint.........: more info...
