With all of the negative vibes on these forums - I see 2007 as a very good year! So do 85% of our fellow Americans!

If you listen to the liberal media and the liberals here on MD one would think the sky is falling - typical paranoia!

I read about the BEE shortage here and 2 weeks later was stung by a swarm of bee's - so we certainly can't believe all we read here!

So if you are in the 15% that have a negative outlook - I will quote Donald Sutherland (Oddball) from Kelly's Heros - "Whats with all the negative waves?"

From Gallup - Read the entire Poll - very interesting breakdowns!

>>>>>>>>>>>> 85% HAVE GREAT PERSONAL OUTLOOK - DO YOU? <<<<<<<<<<<

PRINCETON, NJ -- As Americans look ahead to the new year and reflect on the year past, a recent Gallup Poll finds the public generally content with their own lives. Most Americans say they are generally happy, with a slim majority saying they are "very happy." More than 8 in 10 Americans say they are satisfied with their personal lives at this time, including a solid majority who say they are "very satisfied." This personal satisfaction level contrasts sharply with the low level of satisfaction Americans express with the way things are going "in the United States at this time." Republicans, married adults, those residing in higher income households, parents of young children, those attending church weekly, and whites are most likely to say they are satisfied and happy at this time.

Personal Satisfaction

According to the Dec. 6-9, 2007, poll, 84% of Americans say they are satisfied with the way things are going in their personal life at this time, while 14% are dissatisfied. These results have been fairly stable since Gallup first started tracking Americans' personal life satisfaction in 1979. The percentage of Americans who say they are satisfied with their personal life has averaged 82% over this period, with a low of 73% in July 1979 and a high of 88% in December 2004. (It is worth noting that in the same Dec. 6-9 survey only 27% of Americans said they were satisfied with the way things are going in the United States at this time, providing a vivid contrast between Americans' view of things "out there" across the country and their view of their own personal lives.)

The negative vibes in the forums most likely come from those accusing everyone who disagrees with them of being racists, child molesters, and rapists.

And as a side note, I agree about the liberal media. I recently read a liberal media story about the pope that was a complete fabrication.

You asked a question, I answered the question honestly. It's not my fault you don't like the answer. I'm pretty happy with my life. I'm not the one coming on here daily complaining about evil atheists, evil muslims, and the horridly evil democrats. If I were, then I might think I truly did have an unhappy life.

Well - I guess you are not capable of understanding the poll and commenting on the topic!

No problem!

Apparently you are the one not understanding your own OP iam. If you had actually read what you posted (that would be a nice change) you would have seen the answer to your question.

(It is worth noting that in the same Dec. 6-9 survey only 27% of Americans said they were satisfied with the way things are going in the United States at this time, providing a vivid contrast between Americans' view of things "out there" across the country and their view of their own personal lives.)

My first response answered the questions you posted in the OP. Answering the questions in an OP would seem to be very much on topic. It's a shame you don't understand that.

I have a great outlook!!

Except, when I run into the wackjobs and scumbags of the world...then I get to thinking why did the religious right-wing nutcases elect that "War Monger" in Chief?

I have found the answer...they are wackjobs and scumbags and religious right-wing nutcases!!

I confess "iam"...Angel hasn't peeked and read the poll link yet! But I have a question...Will I remain a Conservative after I read it? That would make my life very happy.

I agree about the liberal media. I recently read a liberal media story about the pope that was a complete fabrication.

The problem of the news media being liars has reached epidemic proportions. It is obvious that new laws should be enacted that place print and broadcast media at risk for substantial statutory tort damages accordingly.

I heard about this strange poll too, and the people reporting about it were just as stunned as I was. I'm not sure what the idea was, but don't believe it. It had to be loaded or misinterpreted, one way or another.

I don't find the general population happy at all. They are very stressed and very concerned about all manner of things happening, jobs, poverty, the war, healthcare, taxes, illegal immigration, inflation, deceit. They agonize endlessly, feel a sense of desperation, but usually for some very valid reasons, in large part based on all the screw-ups of the current administration.

They are turning out in record numbers to elect political replacements for change, as they did in 2006. That hardly means they are satisfied with the status quo.

At least they are nowhere near as happy as what they have been in decades past. Perhaps things are so dismal that Americans have forgotten what "Happy" or "Satisfied" actually are, or how to feel that way. So when asked, they don't really know how to respond.

Satisfied or Happy as compared to what? Last month? Well, possibly.

With Bush and Congress' approval ratings both at all time lows, someone's obviously not happy about something.

MM - your response is not unusual. If you do not like the facts - ignore them!

Haven't you ever taken a survey that asks you to respond to statements with?? It is a common method of polling. Why is this so hard for you to understand?

very satisfied
satisfied
not satisfied
very unsatisfied

I notice the report doesn't specify with a list of the questions and the responses, to demonstrate how the questions were phrased. For instance,

1. Did anyone die in your family this year from violence? Yes/No.

2. Did you or anyone in your family declare bankruptcy? Yes/No.

3. Did you divorce this year? Yes/No.

4. How satisfied are you with the way your PERSONAL life is going? (Thinking, "Well, I've got a girlfriend, I'm going to pay my car off in another year and it hasn't broken down yet, and I was left after layoffs were announced. Guess I'm pretty satisfied with my personal life.")
Very Satisfied, Satisfied, Dissatisfied, Very Dissatisfiied.

I have a friend who used to respond to "Hey, John, how ya doing?" with "Well, I ain't dead and I ain't in jail, so it must be a good day."

Of course I have.. But we are in times of some level of desperation, and a lot of stress and unrest..

And if a poll were widely circulated in the general population about current times, it would not come back as 'Satisfied' or 'Happy' with the current state of either world or national affairs. It would come back heavily weighted toward "Very Unsatisfied".

A lot depends on how a poll is presented, to whom, and what the implications are. Naturally how questions are worded too. And interpretation of the results is a matter of judgment.

That's why I suggest this poll (for whatever reason) is simply not a reflection of reality. And that's why it doesn't get by the smell test.

Hey NO - maybe you can do some consulting for the Gallup Group

Sounds like you know more about polling than Gallup does!

This may be your big chance! Then you too can become a talking head on CNN!

Save the snide comments. All I said was that the exemplar I posted could have been a way to skew poll results, and that we weren't made privy to the slate of questions or choices offered. Even the order in which questions are asked can lead one in certain directions.

I rarely look at raw numbers like that without questioning how the results were arrived at, and especially when, like MM, the results suggest something different than my personal experience would lead me to believe.
