I know there are some on here that wish to talk about "earmarks" or "pork barrell" spending and say it is wasteful. Well, I suppose it is to some and to others it is not. But, compared to the total expenditures of all spending what percentage do you believe it is?
you are about to get the surprise of your life

It all depends what side of the fence you're on-some posters to this site would argue that ANY $$ spent on public schools, mass transit, recycling, etc. would qualify as "pork;" while others would argue that tax susidies for rich people and corporations could be considered the same...based on the formula used in the article, that percentage sounds about right; but what is "pork" under that definition when one's party is in the minority becomes absolutely critical to the well being of our nation when one's party is suddenly in charge-then there's no circumventing of established budgetary procedures, just ramming down America's collective throats of what is absolutely known that we must have, by the "mandate" that was the election that put one's party in power in a given cycle, even if said "mandate" was a victory margin of, oh, say, about one percent...

I did notice that even the republicans took on Bush on the spending bill for infrastructure a while back. I'm sure that put a dent in his massive ego. But fortunately, necessity overtook politics in that one.

Our two leaders will walk away from these eight years as very rich men, and their Federal Pay in office is nowhere near that high.
Care to connect a few dots here and there?

I know there are some on here that wish to talk about "earmarks" or "pork barrell" spending and say it is wasteful. Well, I suppose it is to some and to others it is not. But, compared to the total expenditures of all spending what percentage do you believe it is? I would also agree it depends on which side of the fence you sit and how "pork" is defined. Some bills, like the transportation authorization bill lend themselves to "pork", while others do not. Some define pork as anything that allows for earmarks. Some would loosely define pork as that which occurs in someone else's district.
With regard to earmarks, there was a report done in the early 1990's out of the Oak Ridge energy laboratory of earmarks in DOE programs. What the report discovered was that the earmarking process was in a way more equalitarian, because the federal dollars were disseminated across a wider number of institutions of higher education. Newer state universities were able to obtain needed federal dollars that would have defaulted to the Ivies, Stanford, etc.
At the end of the day, discretionary spending and dollars spent on foreign aid are always a far smaller piece of overall federal spending than most people imagine.

Prior to January 2007 George never met a spending bill he did not like! Since the new Congress took over I have heard about "pork barrell and ear marks" from George almost on a continual basis!
Just like showing the hypocrisy of George Bush!

Just like showing the hypocrisy of George Bush! Not much challenge there. Since he has no heart, he wears his hypocrisy on his sleeve.
(Okay, okay. I'm sure he physiologically is possessed of a heart. It's HUMOR people.)
