These boats used by the Iranian Navy and Islamic Revolutionary Guards are small motorized vessels. Supposedly they got to within 200 yards of three of our war ships. Some of these little boats threw out boxes for whatever reason. And they used the same frequency our ships use in clear to tell them they were going to blow them up!
Remember back about 6 months ago when Bush started calling these Revolutionary Guards terrorists. More than that he declared them a terrorist organization!
That being the case these boats should have been sunk long before they got within 200 yards of these war ships! Why weren't they fired on and sunk out right by naval gunfire? Why hadn't orders been cut to allow our ships to defend themselves against these "terrorist" boats? What is going on?

Let's make an oil slick out of these Iranian Agents Provocateers.

para...They should have been blown out of the water!
This is what amazes me about this...after they blew the side out of one of our ships with a big loss of life it should be common knowledge if you get within so many thousand yards you will be made into Swiss Cheese courtesy of the United States Navy!
Yet, they got within 200 yards. Close enough to launch several shoulder launched missles into those ships! And they could have been "dirty" missles with some "Plutonium" in the war heads!
New Rules of Engagement are needed...right now!!

jeese..you guys are reactionaries...
they were no threat...and one boat almost was blown out of the water... and what is with wanting to blow up a whole country over a bunch of leaky skiffs?..
.....The commander of the Hopper, a guided-missile destroyer, was “very close to giving the order to fire,” said one of the officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak for attribution. “We were perilously close to an incident where we would have taken out at least one of the Iranian small boats.”
The Hopper had trained an M240 machine gun — which fires upward of 10 armor-piercing slugs per second — on one of the Iranian boats that had pulled to within 200 yards of the American vessel, well within the gun’s range, Pentagon officials said. But before the order to fire was issued, the Iranian boat suddenly steered away from the Hopper.
The United States has conducted major war games to prepare for just the kind of event that unfolded over the weekend, because Navy officers have expressed concerns that the weaker Iranian fleet might choose to confront American warships by “swarming” with larger numbers of smaller craft.
....Two of the Iranian boats also dropped boxes in the path of the final American ship in the maritime convoy. The boxes could have been mines or simply dummy boxes meant to test — and learn from — the reaction, officials said.
Defense Department officials said the five speedboats belonged to the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps. Traditionally, the Revolutionary Guards maritime forces have operated in a far more hostile manner than the regular Iranian Navy. In addition, the United States Government describes the Revolutionary Guards as being involved with unconventional weapons and its most elite organization, the Quds Force, as a supporter of terrorism. In Tehran on Monday, the news agency FARS, which is close to the Revolutionary Guards, wrote in an analysis that the accusations were baseless and aimed at depicting Iran as a threat ahead of Mr. Bush’s trip to the region..

Be nice if the 101st and 82nd Airborne were ready to be dropped in Tehran simultaneously to the destruction of some militarily meaningless small water craft, although I would like to see the effects of small craft vs. chain gun.
Sweet.

Gallows_Humor...It is just this we have had a ship severly damaged with a great loss of life from a speed boat ramming it with explosives on board! Since we are at war with terrorists I would consider the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf a War Zone! And all our ships should act accordingly!
It is just good sense to have warnings for all maritime traffic including these motor boats from Iran! If you are within so many thousand yards of an American War Ship we will blow you out of the water!
I would not take the chance of another ship being hit and men killed when I could stop it by letting these countries know I would not tolerate another terrorist act!
My men come first and my ship...not a terrorist or terrorist wannabe!
para.....after looking at some of the film footage from a few of those "Wart Hogs" it is easy to see a Russian Tank can't stand up to those 40mm chain-guns! They shoot those depleted uranium rounds..armor piercing!

In Tehran on Monday, the news agency FARS, which is close to the Revolutionary Guards, wrote in an analysis that the accusations were baseless and aimed at depicting Iran as a threat ahead of Mr. Bush’s trip to the region.. And here are the warmongers, all talking about not only taking out boats which later could be claimed to have been unarmed or no threat. No doubt there were cameras aboard the vessels that did not approach closely, just in case they had the opportunity to catch a US ship blowing up an Iranian boat.
Shoulder fired missles? The incident occured in the Strait of Hormuz, where it was only about 40-50 miles wide. If the policy of the Iranian government was to go ahead and attack one our ships, shore facilities could have easily launched missiles capable of taking out the cruiser.
Like Tom Cruise said of the Russian Mig in Top Gun.. "They're not going to do anything. They're just tryin' to piss us off."

Like Tom Cruise said of the Russian Mig in Top Gun.. "They're not going to do anything. They're just tryin' to piss us off." Stupid game, though, when the average American is already pissed-off to the max about the Iranians. A shot across their bow would turn the small craft away and make me feel better about having the US Navy caress that trigger assembly while thinking of the small boats that attacked the USS Cole, in order to "make a statement" with some firepower.

ummm.....think of what is at stake.
how many Iranian terrorists are in th US? (remember that we have only been looking of one sect of people since 911)
why have a major war on multiple fronts when not all your positions are fortified? ("The Art of War")
why not build the provocation to a climatic decision rather than explode over a child's tantrum? (only fools are bated)
how strong is your military when for years you have been saying that the enemy is no more, only to recant such words? (foolish were those who thought they were wise)
how do you get people to rally during election time for who YOU want in the white house? (chess moves....queen to ??????)
there is always more than meets the eyes going on. have you really been paying attention.......?

There's a lot to be said for keeping our cool and not jumping the gun.
The story was revised shortly thereafter by the Pentagon to say, "Well, maybe it wasn't 200 yards after all. Maybe it was more like 500 yards or so, and we really have no idea what they may have dropped into the water".
The Strait of Hormuz is already a tight, congested area to navigate, and Iran is nowhere near ready to declare all-out war against the United States.
By being patient and not losing composure, a major international incident was successfully averted, and the USA came out of it on top.
While it's true we shouldn't have a lot of patience for international harrassment, and we must demand reasonable respect, (although all the details are not yet available), I don't think this incident warranted blowing off chunks of the globe. At least not at that stage. We don't even know what the motivation may have been for sure. However it will be interesting to pursue it and find out.

The Soviets and United States played these kinds of games for years, and with much larger craft, with numerous close calls and even to the point where there were collisions, deliberate and miscalculated both.
From 1988, as reported by the New York Times:
Two Soviet Navy vessels deliberately bumped two United States warships in the Black Sea today as the American vessels sailed through waters claimed by the Soviet Union, the Pentagon said.
The unusual Soviet response to the passage by American ships 7 to 10 miles off the Crimean peninsula prompted a diplomatic protest from the Reagan Administration, which said the United States Navy had done nothing to provoke the Soviet Union. The cruiser skipper did a good job of maintaining vigilance, but recognizing that the threat was not immediate enough to require an armed response. Had the craft approached closely enough (and I'm not going to specifiy a distance, that's up to those with knowledge of weapons and tactics), he would have been within his rights to open fire. A warning shot across the bow at some pre-authorized distance sounds quite reasonable and would have demonstrated the craft was already targeted. At that distance, it would be hard to hide anything happening on the small vessel from view with binoculars from the cruiser. Anyone raising up enough to launch a shoulder-fired missle would have been visible to observers and the already-trained guns could have opened up before the missile could be accurately targeted and fired. Were caution and adrenaline running high? Certainly. It was a close encounter. Was it to the level of impending threat implied by news reports? I hardly think so.

when the average American is already pissed-off to the max about the Iranians. You make the average American look like a moron. Most aren't pissed off at all. They know they've been lied to about so many things MOST don't want anything to do with going down the same error ridden path that Bush took us with Iraq. MOST people want PEACE. You are another war monger who probably owns stock in Halliburton or KBR. Your days are numbered!

All a war with Iran would do is bump gasoline to $6 a gallon, petro to $200 a barrel, and make the snot rocketeers the Saudis richer than St. Peter.
Does the bull swat at the fly every time it tickles his ear? No! For fear he might knock over his feeding trough.
Dr. Ahmadinejad is trying to provoke a war with the U.S. because we have far more to lose economically than Iran does.
As crappy shape as the USN and USAF is in currently, the US can still secure air and naval supremecy over Iran within hours and bomb the entire country back to Alexander's sacking within days.
Is that really what is our best interests? We sure as hell can fight the Iranian army on the ground, unless we extend an invitation for it to join our parties in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Plus bombing Iran would piss off Iran for even further generations than are already pissed at us, not to mention peeve the Chinese, who depend on Iranian oil, and the Russians who are gearing up for Return of the Cold War.
The USN skippers were in the right. Reduce speed, go to battle stations, and hold fire until fired upon or collision is 100% likely.
And as an ex-Coastie, that's the last good thing I'll say about the USN for a while.

You are another war monger Card carrying member of the US Navy League and celebrated "Hawk" who can be relied upon to champion the legacy of Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and Ronald Reagan.
And while peace and prosperity are worthy goals, a better peace unfolds AFTER we rid the planet of dictators, tyrants, and regimes that subborn genocice, terrorism, criminal cartels, piracy, human rights violations including imposed state religions and the subjugation of women.
When we eliminate those evils thats when the golden age of peace is unfurled and planted worldwide on Planet Earth.
Until then, most Americans are offended at regimes that subborn genocice, terrorism, criminal cartels, piracy, human rights violations including imposed state religions and the subjugation of women and detest dictators and tyrants.
The USA has the most expensive military in the world. It is wrong to use it for empire building but that is not what I am advocated; remember how General Bolivar systematically defeated colonial Spain in all of South America, and did not try to rule the continent as its new Emperor. No, he liberated each country and then let them enjoy self rule. That is my goal as well, providing the new constitutions imbed human rights and universal voting of all adults that are not criminals or mentally ill.
I realize that a lot of Leftists feel intrinsic solidarity with leftist dictatorships but quite frankly, that means nothing to me when I consider the benefits of abolishing dictatorship and tyranny and in so doing, also liberating the planet of the monsters that regimes that subborn genocice, terrorism, criminal cartels, piracy, human rights violations including imposed state religions and the subjugation of women.

I saw the films. And have a good idea how far they were from the ships! If I had been in command they would have received a shot off their bow a long time before they got as close as they did! As close as I saw them in the film they would have been shot out of the water before then!
My men and my ship is everything to my country and its people! We are not discussing the Soviet Navy whom has scrapped the sides of several of our ships before! They were pushing their limits also!
These guys were just like the terrorists that blew the side out of another ship of the line we have. I don't care where they came from if you get within so many thousand yards of my ship you could kiss your a** good-bye! There are terrorists there and to be quite blunt....they all look alike! So, to me they are "all" suspect till they prove to me they are not!
Remember this....sometimes you have to "act" because if you take the time to "re-act" you are dead!

Actually, the boats were a tad closer than 200 yards if you view the videos. Put yourself in the position of the skipper on that US ship for a moment. A speedboat is roaring towards you and the speedboat radioes that he is going to blow you out of the water. What do you do? Sit idle and watch it happen?
That is precisely what the "sheeple" on this thread would want. They want OUR sailors to become martyrs. I say "UP YOURS". Unless another 9/11 is thrown in their face, they would all have us suck our thumbs and do nothing.
The Iranian Republican Guard is still stinging from the last arse-kicking they got during Operation Praying Mantis. Some of them might likely want a little payback and who knows what this independent terrorist force might try.
As was so skillfully pointed out before, those that react are dead. Better to act before when the lives of my brothers are put at further risk. Deep six them...
