America is fighting a war..a war on its disabled! A backlog of over 750,000 cases! A 150% increase since 2000! Many thousands have died waiting for care promised them by the Social Security Administration! Yet, never received it!
As you can see it is coming home to roost for republicans! They care more about tax cuts and corporate greed than about the people that make up this country!
This is a disgrace, folks!

Getting disability in some states is a nightmare. In Florida it takes 2 to 3 years. How are people supposed to live? When you are the least able to cope is when you have to try to figure out a way to just survive. You aren't eligible for other programs unless you have been declared disabled by social security, so you often cannot get medical care either.
It is a horrible experience for anyone who has to go through it.
Many people go through all their resources and still end up on the street. Especially if they have no relatives to help them out.
It is very sad and should not be allowed to continue.

I applied for SSDI in 2006 after losing multiple employment opportunities due to symptoms of my bipolar disorder - I tried to off myself on the clock repeatedly.
Of course I got denied. Crap, I could'v been a paraplegic and still gotten denied.
Anyhoo, after fifteen months of illness, I went back to work and have so far been working steadily for eight months.
Last month, I got word that my appeal to my denial will be held Feb 15: a full two years after the intial application.
I'm darn glad that I didn't actually need the funds during that time or had a source of free medical treatment.
If you don't think bipolar disorder is disabiling, try holding a job when you are either comatose with depression or a freight train is running through your head at 1000mph! Unmedicated bipolar patients tend to be harm to themselves and others.
You're right Duckie, SSDI is a shambles. But remember where are national priorities lay.

How is this issue now tied into taxes. The SSA is supposed to be funded by our "donations." We all know that the Feds have been pilfering the funds for years. No party is any more guilty than the other. Non the less - why now are we calling for taxes to fund it?
I wish it was abolished. The entire program is a sham. If anyone took the money they put into SSA and invested it in anything they would not be crying now. The SSA is a perfect example of why we cannot allow the government to socialize healthcare.
The SSA Administration has its headquarters in my town. They employ 30-40,000 people - this includes HCFA. I have many friends that work there. It is a joke. They will tell you it is a joke. No one does anything and then whenever there is a new White House - it takes a year for everyone to know what they are not supposed to do!

That statement made me feel sick. Think of the suffering, if people did not get disability!
It doesn't need to be abolished. It needs to be fixed.
If anyone took the money they put into SSA and invested it in anything they would not be crying now.
Wrong. Many people lost every dime they had in the stock market.

I concur.
I've heard that it takes almost an Act of Congress to get fired from a federal job.
If the fed was run like a corporation, the chaff would be winnowed out a long time ago leaving only good, wholesome wheat.
Since the fed doesn't have to make a profit, nor is accountable to stockholders, what is the motivation for civil servants to do there job?

uab - that is the least of the problems there. Whenever there is a new White House the place shuts down until all new appointments are made. So then any large programs or decisions are on hold. This could take 5 months after the election. Then everyone waits to see what the new appointees will do!
Thinks about this for a minute. The SSA has trillions of Dollars tied up in a computer system.
We all know that Illegal immigration is a major concern.
We all know that SSA has all people with SSA accounts in their system.
We all know that most illegals get fake ID as they cross the border - including fake SSA Cards.
The big issue now is - who is responsible for these illegal workers since we all know that the Feds have no idea what is going on.
SO - One would think that an employer could verify that a SS Number equals the name on the card. In this day and age of database technology this would be simple - RIGHT?
Wrong! The SSA cannot begin to offer this service to employers! SO if Juan Valdez has an SSA Number that equals Charlie Jones - the employer will pay into Charlies SSA account for years before they figure out what is going on! Yet if the employer gets raided they will be charged with employing an illegal alien! Go figure that one out!
VERY NICE!! And some want this same Gov't to run our health care???

Seems like your in favor of a national ID system, similar to U.S. passports.
I don't care who runs our health care system as long as it's fair and affortable to all Americans.
God damned BCBS of AL made me get rid of my therapist of THREE years because she wasn't as PhD. She happens to be the reason I'm able to even have BCBS and a job today. Her services are good enough for AL to pay for so why not BCBS of AL.

The VA system is the worst and best of socialized medicine in the U.S. I was a 'guest' of the VA in Atlanta until they kicked me out for not being "veteran enough". My Dx had changed dramatically while their guest, yet they booted me out with pills that made me unable to protect and take care of myself.
And we're expected to rebuild another nation's government when our own civil servants can't find their asses in a dark room with both hands and flashlight?

I work for them. If you aren't a butt-kissing liar, when you stick up for yourself, they come after you for tardies, absences, allege "failure to follow instruction", make people feel guilty about fmla use, hound you for every little thing.
The others? Can scream, yell, cuss, sit on their fannies, THROW things at people and get a swat on the hand.
It doesn't take an act of Congress...they have to follow proper procedure and afford employees "due process." As in a court of law, employees are given "their day in court."

steve - I could say the same for ANYONE that wants to perpetuate a program that has failed for years, continues to get worse, and is doomed. It is people like you that like to see people suffer - because they are suffering and you want to keep it going! This cannot be blamed on Bush.
There are NO politicians from either party that has the courage to do anything to fix it. There needs to be a drastic change or you are looking at what your retirement will be like right there in that article!

No, to be fair, they don't consider the suffering. They think, "I have plenty of money, I have rich relatives, I'm set. So why should I care about everyone else?"
Everyone else is just "surplus population." If they can't stay healthy, they should just disappear. (Not die, because in their worldview, no-one dies from neglect. They just sort of fade away...)

Many people with hemophilia have a variety of horrible side effects like huge joints that they constantly bleed into as well as abdominal bleeds. Babies with epidermolysis bullosa are born denuded of skin and spend every day of their painful lives covered in blisters similar to being those seen in third degree burns. The parents pop the blisters every day and the constant scarring mittens their fingers and toes making walking and playing unthinkable. While very different diseases, both communities, especially the children, have had a horrific time getting covered by SSDI.
During the Reagan Administration, the agency was ordered by the White House to disenroll children. Congress objected and they were put back on the rolls. It's a tragedy that this Administration has gone back to those dark days.
