Thanks, Nightowl. Martha Stout's book is part of my writer's library. I recommend it highly.

Isn't that mislabeled?
Shouldn't it be "A Bush/Cheney Joint Biography" instead???

This must be the "my guys lost twice and I'm going to whine for 8 years" thread?

Interestingly, Gallup did a poll in November 2007.
Republicans self-report better mental health
In part of the summation of findings:
Gallup also conducted a separate multivariate analysis that looked at the impact of a list of variables -- including party identification -- on self-reported mental health. This analysis showed that even when the impact of these other variables is controlled for statistically, there is an independent and highly significant impact of being a Republican on mental health. I believe that should have been stated as "a significant impact of self-identifying as a Republican on self-reporting of mental health state."
Having worked in mental health myself for a number of years, I automatically question self-reporting of mental state as most sociopathies involve a high degree of delusion and an inability to recognize that one is indeed ill. As in the classic example of a criminal who demonstrates no remorse for their crime, that criminal honestly does not see that there is anything wrong with them.
A study published by the American Psychological Foundation (A .pdf file requiring Adobe Acrobat to read: http://www.wam.umd.edu/~hannahk/bulletin.pdf) found in part:
We regard political conservatism as an ideological belief system that is significantly (but not completely) related to motivational concerns having to do with the psychological management of uncertainty and fear. Specifically, the avoidance of uncertainty (and the striving for certainty) may be particularly tied to one core dimension of conservative thought, resistance to change (Wilson, 1973c). Similarly, concerns with fear and threat may be linked to the second core dimension of conservatism, endorsement of inequality (Sidanius & Pratto, 1999). Although resistance to change and support for inequality are conceptually distinguishable, we have argued that they are psychologically interrelated, in part because motives pertaining to uncertainty and threat are interrelated (e.g., Dechesne et al., 2000; McGregor et al., 2001; van den Bos & Miedema, 2000).

Interesting thread and posts Nightowl. I read the article and the similarities to the "usual suspects" are eerie!

Thanks, Storm. I decided maybe I shouldn't be so quick to criticize some of these people and try to convince them their stance is incorrect in my view, but should instead try to help them find some mental health counseling and perhaps medications.

In some cases shock therapy (ECT) has been known to adjust ultra-conservative dopamine receptors, and to bring the subjects around to a somewhat broader, more-enlightened perspective. But unfortunately, it doesn't always last indefinitely..
And here I thought that first article was surely about a few of those in our Executive Branch.. Go figure!

They are most assuredly included, MM. But the scope was broader than just those!

Well, I suggest all Sociopathic personalities should be recognized and dealt with, at the earliest possible time.
Not only that, but it should be considered disqualifying criteria, for anyone running for significant Public Office, most notably, POTUS.
The same political limitations should apply to Borderline Personality Disorder as well.

How many people on this forum fit that profile? More than a few in my opinion.
