The CDC, Centers for Disease Control, our nations top public health agency. An agency made to look out for Americans! Has decided under the Bush Administration to look out for corporations and forget the people that fund its existance! Another look at the scams that permeate the republican controlled government!

This report is further proof you as an American are not important at all when it comes to corporate profits! Actually these people are criminals! Including George Bush!

Yes, the toxic trailer problem is what stopped me from requisitioning some for my fire department.

This is a problem way beyond just trailers.
This out-gasing of toxic formaldehyde is found in everything made of partical board.

CBS News has learned that the Centers for Disease Control, the nation's top public health agency, suppressed repeated warnings from one of its top scientists, raising questions about whether the CDC bowed to pressure from FEMA to conceal the long-term health risks of formaldehyde in the trailers it distributed to hurricane victims - health risks like cancer and birth defects,

I fail to see the relevance.. these trailers are not designed to be permanent housing...Fema was faced with an emergency..and emergency solutions were implemented...

my solution is... repossess all the trailers...and sell them on ebay....

You say these trailers were not designed for permanent housing! Then what were they designed for and sold for? To look at? To set on a street somewhere to admire?

You do know people buy these to use vacationing and to live in on a permanent basis! I do not understand your reasoning in this matter. Perhaps you could explain yourself a little further!

hi eastham...

from your link..

"FEMA did not suppress or inappropriately influence any report," said agency spokesman James McIntyre.

The lawmakers are questioning the integrity of research done by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, and said they don't trust FEMA to conduct an independent investigation into the toxicity of the formaldehyde in trailers.

The investigation, led by Rep. Brad Miller, D-North Carolina, found the health agency ignored research from one of its own experts, Christopher De Rosa.

Because the health opinion was completed without appropriate oversight, the results could be misleading, De Rosa wrote in a February 27, 2007, letter to a FEMA attorney that was obtained by the subcommittee.

"Any level of exposure to formaldehyde may pose a cancer risk, regardless of duration," De Rosa wrote. "Failure to communicate this issue is possibly misleading and a threat to public health."

In its initial round of testing, FEMA took samples from unoccupied trailers that had been aired out for days and compared them with federal standards for short-term exposure, according to the lawmakers. FEMA officials instructed scientists at the health agency to leave out details about long-term exposure in its consultation.

emphasis is mine...

my question is were these brand new trailers? as the off gassing is greatest for the first couple of weeks..after that the amount is less and less...

and these trailers were not designed to be permanent housing for these people .. (this is the dept of HUD's area) ..but short term emergency housing..

I repeat.. take the people out of the trailers..and put those same trailers on ebay.. I am betting that taxpayers would love to buy them at a discount...

not really.. the real story is... that these people should not still be living in fema trailers... the emergency is over..and the govermment has stalled in it's duties to these people..

the long term exposure here is a valid point ....

I think the main point that is being overlooked here is that ALL trailers, mobiles etc have this toxic effect on people.

Why is our government allowing this material to be used, even though it is a proven toxic substance?

Remember the wood that was treated with pesticides and preservatives (privacy fences, decks, childrens playgrounds etc)? Now this wood is considered so toxic they won't even accept it at dumps unless they have a liner. This is the same sort of situation. The corporations are allowed to poison people, even when the government has knowledge of the dangers of their products.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — While the Federal Emergency Management Agency rushes to move thousands of Gulf Coast storm victims out of government-issued trailers, scientists are tearing the units apart to learn why many have exposed occupants to dangerous levels of formaldehyde fumes.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is studying materials used by several companies that provided FEMA with tens of thousands of travel trailers after hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005.

Test results reported this week by the CDC showed formaldehyde levels in hundreds of FEMA trailers and mobile homes were, on average, about five times higher than what people are exposed to in most modern homes. Formaldehyde, a preservative commonly used in construction materials, can cause breathing problems and also is believed to cause cancer.

CDC director Dr. Julie Gerberding said scientists need time to determine how — and why — formaldehyde levels varied among different models of FEMA trailers. Scientists from the CDC and the University of California's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory also are looking at ways to reduce formaldehyde emissions in the trailers.

The study was limited to materials in unoccupied government trailers. Gerberding said other studies indicate formaldehyde levels in manufactured homes are steadily decreasing "in a fairly significant manner."

"Mainly because the manufacturers don't want this problem," she said, "so they're learning how to use new materials and changing their processing."

Kevin Broom, spokesman for the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association, said Friday the industry would adjust its manufacturing techniques if the government adopts stricter formaldehyde standards than those already set by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

"We in the RV industry are committed to following the science and making sure our products are safe," Broom said in a statement.

FEMA said its New Orleans office received nearly 70 phone calls from concerned residents after Thursday's announcement.

Sherry Gremillion, 45, a waitress still living in a St. Bernard Parish trailer park, said she can't afford an apartment large enough to accommodate her family or close enough to her job. FEMA expects to close the trailer park by March 15.

"I fell asleep crying last night," she said Friday. "I don't think I'm going to make it."

Hundreds of Gulf Coast trailer dwellers are suing manufacturers in federal court, accusing the companies of furnishing FEMA with shoddily constructed units that jeopardized their health. By law, FEMA can't be named as a defendant in the consolidated litigation until next month at the earliest, according to plaintiffs lawyers.

Critics claim FEMA should have reacted sooner to concerns that formaldehyde is to blame for a host of ailments reported by trailer occupants.

"They knew full well something was wrong. They were just hoping nothing would happen," said attorney Daniel Becnel Jr., who says he represents about 5,000 trailer occupants.

Another plaintiffs lawyer said trailer makers are the "real culprits."

"Obviously FEMA made lots of mistakes, but FEMA didn't manufacture these trailers," said Tony Buzbee, a lawyer for hundreds of current and former trailer occupants.

A lawyer for the companies sued in U.S. District Court in New Orleans didn't return a telephone call for comment Friday.

FEMA administrator R. David Paulison said Thursday the agency hoped to move all of the roughly 35,000 families out of trailers by summer, when hot weather increases formaldehyde emissions.

Louisiana has 25,162 occupied FEMA trailers and mobile homes, while Mississippi has 10,362, according to FEMA. The number of occupied FEMA trailers and mobile homes peaked at 144,000 following the hurricanes.

Paulison called the relocations a "stopgap measure."

"We're not booting people out. What we're doing to putting them into hotels and motels until we can find an apartment for them," he said. "It's just transition, to get them out of the travel trailer and into someplace where it's safer."

Many residents still in FEMA trailer parks are elderly or have disabilities, meaning they are on fixed incomes and can't easily find affordable housing, said Tracie Washington, president of the Louisiana Justice Institute, a nonprofit advocacy group for the poor.

"These are people that rented $200, $300 apartments before Hurricane Katrina, and those aren't available anymore," Washington said. "They're afraid that if they're moved into hotels they'll wind up homeless in a few months."

This very true. How many of you have went to where they sell Modular homes? Not just what you perceive as regular trailers?

If you have, did you see a paper on the outside that warned against thes toxins?

I remember going through some modular homes thinking I might want one instead of building from the ground up. By the time I was done, I could taste this stuff!

Of course, our carpets, and walls have this stuff in them too. Also a lot of furniture.

One of the things that kills people in a fire is the toxic fumes from the burning furniture and the carpets.

And these same trailers are being recycled to those made homeless in Oklahoma by the recent rash of tornadoes.

If the only choice anyone is given..is.. living in a fema trailer.. or camping in a canvas tent during the 4 seasons until you can afford to replace your home..which one would anybody choose?

my assumptions are...

... that the tornado damaged homes were covered by insurance? and the trailers are just temporary?

....and the tornado damaged moblile homes have the same issues as these trailers?

.. what will become of her?

remembering here that " the housing bubble" also caused rents to go up...have they come back down yet?

What about those that engage in Winter/early spring/late fall camping? These trailers were designed to be all-season usable, but if I'm on a cross-country skiing campout w/my family, I don't think leaving windows open in mid-January is exactly an option; at least not here in Wisconsin...

katts - you are correct - it is the same issue as there is with carpet and in new cars.

I have been in a FEMA trailer. They are nice. My friend lost his home to a hurricane and flood in MD 5 years ago and lived in it for 2 years.

The idea that this entire issue is being focused on FEMA is insane.

...

there are many different types of heaters..

A "space heater" which heats only the inside stale (contaminated ) air..

A "forced air heater" which heats either

.... inside contaminated air over and over and is more efficient

... or an inefficient one that pulls outside air in, heats it up, and blows it into the rooms.
This one would replace the stale contaminated air with new air from the outside.. especially if one opened a window on the far side of the heater vents a crack
