I can tell you the email that was circulated about Obama was a scam. A government employee was arrested for originating that email.
A good way to do research is to simply type in your question in your search box. Keep your questions as simple as possible. You soon learn which sites are legit and which ones aren't. A lot of sites speak for themselves, as you will recognize them. There are a lot of radical sites out there, both republican and democrat, but they are pretty easy to recognize.
Example:
In your search box type;
Does Obama salute the American flag?

You can do a little research like I just did to substantiate or refute anything you get, as the case may be. In this case it is substantiated that Obama didn't pledge at one particular event. And this is officially documented despite what some have said here. This is one new link, there are others.

This thread is a prime example of the problem. Slanted on one side, slanted on the other, with absolutely no unslanted source of facts. But eastham hit the nail on the head. Snopes is almost always your best bet.

Just like Fox says.. Tune your TV to FOX News and put a big piece of duct tape over the Channel Selector, cause there's no reason to go anywhere else!! Besides who would ever want to anyway? O'Reilly is on FOX!
And if you do go elsewhere, your brain will surely turn to mush.. And nobody wants that! So just don't do it..

I would check out the candidates websites first. Their platform is usually outlined on their site. THEN if you have heard any rumors about said candidate, check out snopes.com and about.com.

FactCheck
truth-o-meter
Just remember check sources....many sources....not just one or two! I have given you two links above to help you somewhat.
The more sources will give you access to the facts....the better informed you are....then the easier it is to make an intelligent and informed opinion! Opinions are like something else I know...everyone has one....but, the "facts" will speak for themselves!

I can tell you the email that was circulated about Obama was a scam. A government employee was arrested for originating that email. And the charge that was preferred was illegal dissemination of false rumors without benefit of a FCC broadcaster's license with intent to shuck and jive in the First Degree.
As if a government employee CAN BE ARRESTED for making a statement, regardless of its truth!
This is what Google had to say about the government employee being arrested:
Your search - I can tell you the email that was circulated about Obama was a scam. A government employee was arrested for originating that anti Obmama email. - did not match any documents.
So there is more than one layer of falsehood to this Urban Legend.

I must say I support Hillary Clinton. So, you do the research and decide for yourself and don't take my word for it!
But, as a Senator sworn to Preserve, Protect and Defend The Constitution...etc...etc...! When the need arises you must respect the fallen men and women that gave their lives for that flag. Therefore, all due respect including saluting or putting your right hand over your heart and looking at the flag, in my opinion, is a requirement of any American!
That picture showed when it was taken that he was being disrespectful of brave men and women that have died for our country!
You search find the picture and read about it from several sources and I believe you will come to the same conclusion I did!
BTW, I am a Democrat!

So there is more than one layer of falsehood to this Urban Legend. No offense, Para, but if I searched for the exact phrase of "the porcupine presses makeup onto the brown leaf" (a phrase I made up on the fly), I'm not going to get any hits on Google, either. Searching for an exact phrase (by enclosing it in quotation marks) tends to exclude most documents, simply because the exact words and the word order don't match a lot of documents. It's most useful for finding out where someone copy/pasted from, for instance.

To the original poster, I'd check anything in an email against snopes.com. I'd check any recent political news against fact-check.org.

Keeping in mind this was the singing of the National Anthem, (and a pretty butchered job of it at that), as opposed to the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, and he is standing,

A government employee was arrested for originating that anti Obmama email. - did not match any documents. Gee, if you spell his name correctly, it gets a lot more hits.
Now, was this a further attempt at disinformation? Were we intended to overlook that the name was misspelled and just take it at face value that the search "did not match any documents." If MD's forums were included in the search engine database, the fact that it had been stated in this forum should have shown up at the very least. . (I belong to an RC flying group that is like that. I Google questions about model aircraft and their forum discussions come up in the search results all the time. Although that does not in and of itself indicate any truth or falseness regarding the search results.)

NightOwl:
If you google that exact phrase, it turns up no results (or, it did when Para wrote the post). With the use of quotation marks around a phrase, Google searches for those exact words, in that particular order. Since no-one had ever written that exact phrase on a webpage that was indexed by Google before, of COURSE it turned up nothing.
Now, if he had left out the quotation marks, he would have found a lot more matches...

lol.. well, I left out the quotation marks but copied it exactly as above, with the name misspelled, and got no hits. So, I was led to wonder if this WAS some kind of disinformation campaign. Claim that something didn't get any hits, but be subtle about such a thing as the spelling so as to insure there are no hits and hope no one catches it. Actually, I have to wonder how many would have to try to Google anything with the name "Obama" in it (or as you say, to put it "exactly" in quotes so as to deliberately not get a return) without turning up hundreds, thousands, or even hundreds of thousands of hits. Either way, it sounds to my cynical mind like a deliberate attempt to get an answer one wants, rather than a true answer.
