It has been announced that a rural school district in Georgia is going to seperate students by sex beginning next year in an attempt to improve the quality of education, including the number of graduating students as well as the SAT scores.
What are your thoughts on this trail program. Link to thaearticle I read is listed below.

There are other school districts that have in part segregated students by sex; however, this is the first school district to do so and even some of the proponents of single sex education, which were quoted in the attached article, feel that the GA school district has gone to far.
Some children thrive in a single sex environment, some do not. While a choice might be acceptable, changing the entire district is not warranted.

I thought segregation was taken care of a few decades ago by that King guy.

I think it also runs a risk of compromising the socialization skills of the students.

Very good point, Silver. Frankly, I don't understand the logic behind some of the proponents of single sex education for girls who believe that leadership skills are better taught away from boys. If ultimately you must compete with men for jobs and you relegate boys at an early age as someone you only associate with on dates and in other social situations, how is it possible for girls to develop a competitive edge. Conversely, boys often behave better in school situations when girls are present.

No, You have a point as well. I was speaking to the fact that these are the year when we learn how to co-mingle and socialize with the other sex. These are also the years when when are suppose to learn that all good ideas dont only come from he/she. So you just raised another concern for which I share.

eastham - is this a fact or an opinion?

No! I think you are refering to two different things. Respect is taught in the home. We cant continue to blame development on schools while excusing the parents/parent who neglects to give their child the tools needed before turning them loose on the world. My parents taught me respect. Not school.

silver - this behavior is taught by the media - it is allowed to exist in schools. I remember reading that schools in Georgia have banned ass crack jeans! The schools have a responsibility to protect the students from good homes from those from the bitch ho culture.
Someone has to do something to create a culture of respect in schools.

You know I have neices and nephews who are currently growing up in this culture but my siblings take an active role in their lives. They dont suffer from which you have described. This is because they are given the tools at home to know the difference in what is veiwed on TV and what is expected of them.

To be clear, it is not the role of little girls to socialize boys; however, here's a link to one such piece (with additional links embedded within) to a study done in Britain that showed that little boys behave better and perform better in co-educational schools. From the Guardian.

Gray,
A good part of your link discusses mandatory single sex education that is the product of a society, Pakistan is one country, where the sexes are by in large segregated throughout life. This is true throughout the Third World where for cultural reasons rather than improved test scores, single sex education is de rigeur.

One more thing!
If the media is the main influence over your kids, you need to look at yourself.

read the entire article, don't just scan it, and if you want more studies I can provide you the links, or you can google them yourself, many of them from England which support the view that single sex schooling is better for all inviolved.

Silver, It was not me who brought up the British article but Eastham, I was merely [pointing out that there were many other articles and studies of British origin that opposed the article she provided. There are also many studies and articles published in this country which support the theory that single sex education is better for the students. It does not say that they be totally segregated but may inclued some co-ed activities as also mentioned int he original article that I posted.
I agree with you that respect must be taught in the home but also beleive that it must be re-enforced and supported in the schools. I know that I am from another generation but I can assure youthat when I was in school it was definitly supported int he school systems up to and including University study.

"I am outraged," said Tammi Freeman, who has two children at the high school. "I am disgusted. It's making our county look like our kids are trouble when they're not."
Really???
Greene County is set to become the first school district in the nation to go entirely single-sex, with boys and girls in separate classrooms — a move born of desperation over years of poor test scores, soaring dropout rates and high numbers of teenage pregnancies.
I have to say, I am for it. Matter of fact, I think separate schools would be better.
Plus uniforms. It really is bad in the schools. Unless you have had kids that have went through this mess, you might not understand. Girls compete agaianst each other in clothes, and who can get the boy's eye.
The poor young guys are just wondering what is going on,,lol.

If the media is the main influence over your kids, you need to look at yourself. I do not have kids -
Then where did this culture come from? No one in my generation went to school with pants falling down other than plumbers. I never called a woman a bitch or a ho - nor did anyone that I know.
SO where did this come from?
