Choose Your Heroes Wisely.....
In 2008 who are your chosen heroes and what
qualities do you require in your heroes
?

Definition of a hero :
a man distinguished by exceptional courage and nobility and strength; The literal meaning of the word is "protector", "defender" or "guardian

Heroes once were people who shone in a special talent or sphere ...
Celebrities are not the same thing as heroes. Heroes existed way before celebrities ever did.

Worshiping the cult of celebrity teaching our youth that no sacrifice, achievement or talent is needed to be a hero .... fame is the only objective /

What is a hero?

A hero needs to instruct & inspire people ... set a great example .. do something worthy of my admiration..... They have a vision, and the skill and charm to implement their vision.

*Is humanitarian- Cares for and respects people, generous,
fights injustice, wants to make the world a better place.

*Persistent- might make mistakes but keeps trying,
focuses on the job.

*Responsible, ,honest, trustworthy.

* Courageous and Brave- Is willing to take risks,
stands up for his/her beliefs.

*Intelligent- logical, sees the big picture,
identifies the problem and plans a solution.

*Selfless and humble-puts others first,
doesn't seek rewards or praises.

*Has a sense of humor.

*Mentally Strong and self confident- fear, mistakes, problems
don't stop him/her.

List your heroes and say why you admire them ( political past and present )

One question: if I list who I consider a "hero" politically, is that just going to be an avenue for the NeoCons on this site to start their usual ideological tomato lobbing? "Cause I wonder if it's worth the effort...

Allright then; here we go-I'll go into detail, to give our resident NeoCons and feeders of sound bites a good chance to load up for the prerequisite-and expected-potshots:

Frank P. Zeidler (September 20, 1912 – July 7, 2006)
Milwaukee mayor, 1948-1960; Socialist Party candidate for President of the United States of America, 1976

*Is humanitarian- Cares for and respects people, generous, fights injustice, wants to make the world a better place.
He outlined his driving motives succinctly in [his] inaugural address(to the mayor's office, in 1948): "I propose to offer vigorous leadership and action with only one purpose - the public welfare."--Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel
At the 1955 groundbreaking for the Hillside housing project, he decried the conditions that some Milwaukeeans lived in and defended public efforts to help them: "If it is the philosophy of any that the forces of government should not be used to overcome these conditions, which private enterprise did not overcome, that philosophy borders on the immoral," he said.--Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel

*Persistent- might make mistakes but keeps trying, focuses on the job.
On Oct. 6, 1959, he told supporters to look for someone else to run for mayor in 1960. He said: "This job is an awful drain on a guy's energy . . . I'm tired all the time. It's a hard thing to swim upstream all the time and carry the banner of progressive ideas."
Zeidler had had several serious illnesses as mayor, including a virus infection in 1949 that put him in the hospital for seven weeks; surgery to remove a fibrous tumor in his lungs, which took him out for five weeks in 1951, and two rounds of Asian flu in 1957.--MJS
He held tight to his political principles: He was elected as a Socialist when it was possible to be one and still be in the mainstream in Milwaukee, and he stayed one to the end, when it was a movement on the political margin.--MJS

*Responsible, honest, trustworthy.
He had impeccable integrity. He was just a giant in local government and was respected all over the country. He didnt have the good looks and the charm, but he didnt need it -- his depth, his sincerity, his intellectual ability, his devotion to all the good things. He was a peace person. He had it all.-- Vel Phillips, first African-American woman elected to the Milwaukee Common Council
In six decades in the public spotlight, he was never involved in a situation where the propriety of his conduct was called into question. Many disagreed with specific issues or philosophies he held, but few ever suggested he was not a man of deep commitment to principle.--MJS

* Courageous and Brave- Is willing to take risks, stands up for his/her beliefs.
Principle sometimes meant more than family to Zeidler. When Carl (Zeidler, Frank's older brother) ran for mayor, Frank endorsed (incumbent Mayor Dan)Hoan, who had been mayor since 1916, because Hoan was a Socialist and Carl was not.

*Selfless and humble-puts others first, doesn't seek rewards or praises.
Zeidler's three terms in office (1948 to 1960) were marked by the construction of public housing, the establishment of the first educational television station in Wisconsin, slum clearance and city beautification programs, and strong statements for civil rights.--WI Historical Society
He stayed active in the public dialogue. He had fierce idealism. He didnt have any mundane, selfish motives.-- John O. Norquist, former mayor

*Has a sense of humor.
He had a sense of humor, but the furrowed brow was much more his trademark than the broad smile.--MJS
In a 1948 interview, he said: "I am particularly proud of that debate in the September 1943 issue - the one between E.H. Johnson and W.W. Schmidt on the question, 'Will America Become More Nationalist?' I call your attention to the fact that in the first, under the name of Johnson, I conclusively proved that America would. And then, under the name of Schmidt, I showed, unanswerably, that she wouldn't. Very nice debating, if I say so myself."--MJS

*Mentally Strong and self confident- fear, mistakes, problems don't stop him/her.Frank Zeidler was a pivotal figure in Milwaukee who embodied honest and efficient government. A tireless advocate for social justice, Frank never relented in his struggle to give voice to those who had none. His inspiring leadership of Milwaukees postwar urban renewal efforts paved the way for improvements that we continue to build on today.-- Tom Barrett, Mayor
Zeidler was only 47 when he left office. In the following decades, Zeidler held only one major office - director of the state Department of Resource Development - under Gov. John W. Reynolds in 1963-'64. He worked as a teacher, labor arbitrator and mediator, and consultant. No Zeidler political machine carried any clout once he was out of office; no alliance or bond melded Zeidler and the powerful in the city's public and private circles. The man who had been elected mayor three times often found only a handful of people listening to what he had to say, and almost none of that handful had any power.

Nah: Soldiers
past or present that fought and fight for my freedoms....kudos gentlemen

...of which 20% are women.

...And certainly members of ParaRescue, Medical Corp, or any medical, rescue or fire team that continuously risk their lives to save others; anytime, anywhere.

===================

...To the OP, heroes are not limited to men, as many women were, are and will be heroes as well... including many Mothers, Mother Teresa, Helen Keller, Clara Barton, Eleanor Roosevelt, Joan of Arc, etc., all for their individual beliefs that many fought for and certainly all self sacrificed for.

...I am not going to post the bibliographies of all that made and make a huge difference in the world, as that would take pages upon pages...

Carry on...

PS: It "ain't" Obama or Clinton...

Just going to list one of mine, right now.

Cincinnatus.

A soldier-citizen who rose to the defense of his country in a time of crisis. And, when the crisis was over, put down the mantle of power and walked away.

Because of my strong believe that since both parties are equally worthless, polarized, and full of crap, the emergence of a viable centrist 3rd party is essential for the salvation of this nation...and soon!!!......................

Jesse Ventura....

He proved it IS possible to run for major office as an independent and win...of course with both sides pissed at him, despite his popularity and some really good ideas, effective governing proved to be all but impossible...

FDR, Churchill, and others...including but not limited to Eleanor Roosevelt, John Lennon, etc.

Each is a "hero" for a different reason. Some are "heroes" because they have shaped who I am and made me a better person.

Jesse Ventura....

Thank you for giving this great man credit. There are many who will not because of his past with the WWF/E (and he was a hell of a commentator). The truth is that just because he was a wrestler and a commentator does not mean he is not an intelligent human being (as some ignorant, idiotic people believe), and I honestly thank you for giving him credit that he so rightly deserves.

In order of the dates, in which they lived

George Washington - He worked to build a nation, conceived in liberty and turned down the chance to become king, when it was offered to him. He only sought to serve, not to profit from his public life. It is too bad that we do not have people like him running our government today.
Mahatma Ghandi - He changed an empire and built a nation, through his strength of will, his humanity and his decency.
Martin Luther King - He truly sought to improve the lives of millions, without trying seeking financial profits or personal power. He lived for his dream and tried to make others see society as it should be.
My father - He taught me to be honest in all of my dealings, to treat people with respect, that my word was my bond and that a man always put the needs of his family ahead of his own.

Unfortunately, all of the above are dead. I thought long, trying to come up with the name of a living hero. Unfortunately, none come to mind.

Mine were all dead too Say_Yes.
Other then the soldier the police officer or the fireman thats only doing the job they wanted to do for society the only hero I could think of that wasnt was Reggie White and it had nothing to do with football,it was his moral sincerity and the qualities he showed for our young athletes to follow.
Its sad that much of what one person has done in life isnt even realized until after theyre gone and they can do no more.

of course not ...... it was a definition I did not write ..

Celebrities are not the same thing as heroes. Heroes existed way before celebrities ever did.

Courageous and Brave- Is willing to take risks,
stands up for his/her beliefs.

I said people and used his/her ......

My heroes .. or some of them are below ....mostly strong women as its them that inspire me the most

Nelson Mandela . Mother Theresa. William Wallace. Tahmeena Faryal &; the Women of Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan( for improving the lives of women in Afghanistan, while documenting their suffering at the hands of the Taliban regime.) The Women of courage - Jennifer Louise Williams of Zimbabwe; Siti Musdah Mulia of Indonesia; Ilze Jaunalksne of Latvia; Samia al-Amoudi of Saudi Arabia; Mariya Ahmed Didi of Maldives; Susana Trimarco de Veron of Argentina; Mary Akrami of Afghanistan; Aziza Siddiqui of Afghanistan; Sundus Abbas of Iraq; and, Shatha Abdul Razzak Abbousi of Iraq.

The U.S. State Department recently honored women with the International Women of Courage Award. The winners are among ninety-five women who were nominated by American embassies worldwide. The awards are an opportunity, said U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, "to pay tribute to women from around the world who courageously champion equal rights in their communities."

A hero is a champion: someone who fights for a cause

I agree with some of the other responders that the term hero should not be limited to a man it can very well be a woman also.

My modern day hero's would be anyone who wears the uniform of any branch of the military, those who are firefighters, policemen and others who serve to protect.
