The city of San Francisco is battling a waste disposal problem. The Guardian UK reports that "4% of the city's residential waste -- some 6,500 tons a year -- is made up of animal byproducts, a scientific term for dog shit. The dog shit rivals disposable nappies for the space it takes up on landfill sites." The city has hired a company called Sunset Scavenger to do the dirty work. They will be scooping the poop in public places, storing and fermenting it, and then selling it back to the city's inhabitants in the form of methane gas. The plan is that the methane will power their appliances. What's next -- will human poop soon be going into a composter to fire up the gas stove or water heater? In twenty years will I be saying to Mr. Blaster, "Honey, eat extra beans today so I can have a hot bath?" If that's the case, I picked the right husband! All right, the head lines I used are a bit misleading but I thought there was a bit of humor to be found and you may like it.
So all of you give your best to the solid waste plant and bring down the price of gas in America.

You are sadly mistaken if you think this is anything new. People have been using animal dung as fuel for thousands of years. In fact, it is still used in isolated nations where gasoline and wood are not readily available. For that matter, manure is used as fertilizer on most of the crops we grow.

LOL, I was looking for the title of my antique gardening/farming book that has several different plans for methane recovery and use from (mostly) cow manure. I think this is still used on farms and ranches throughout the country and around the world to collect methane gas. As I recall, "Mother Earth News" also posted a number of articles on methane back in the 70's...related to composting toilets as well as composted animal dung.
Might as well use puppy poop. There's sure enough of it on the streets and in yards these days.

Actually, organic Gardening says NOT use to human or domesticated animal poop in the compost. We always used cow, pig, rabbit, and chicken.

The original composting toilets I remember seem to be off the market or have changed names (or I forget the spelling, lol), but there are several others on the market according to the net. I recall that it had to be a separate composting system -- not mixed with other compost material -- to develop the required heat in its process to kill all the germs.
Trapping methane and using it as fuel, whatever the source, just sounds practical -- and would do the world good not only in re-cycling, but for air quality and water quality (read about the awful problems they have with pig manure in one of the Carolinas ~sigh~...and they could be cashing in on their goldmine! )
---- I think the recent salmonella outbreaks are because the poop hasn't been composted thouroughly. "Live" manure is great, but it can also spread some diseases, unfortunately, if the produce isn't washed properly.
