My team and I went to hand out rice, beans, sugar, and oil to the local poor. I saw people living on uneven dirt floors in rickety wood homes which were more poorly build than some dog houses I've built. That night at dinner, I looked at my rice and beans and realized that I was eating in one night what they were eating in four days. I wept at devotional and prayed that God would remove my sin of glutony. Yes, we American are spoiled. In our land our sheetrock, hot showers, and fresh meat, few of us have seen poverty and can put a face on it. We are bombarded with advertisements constantly which teaches us to want and want and want instead of being happy with all that we have. The Costa Ricans I met were all content in their world with what little they owned. All they wanted was food for the day and knowing that some one cared about them. I'm proud to say that I was able to give them both if only for a little while. I left part of my heart in Costa Rica and I can't wait until next year to go back. I found the hard way that the biggest change I could make wasn't to the Costa Ricans, but to myself. What I saw on those muddy hills will be with me for a life time. God bless.
