Yeah right! The article written in Scientific American (The ethics of climate change. Scientific American, 2008) - warped back in time!
Your cut/paste without source is nothing more than vague observation of weather reports dating back years before "serious" study on climatic change began. Your "friends" are merely on the climatic non-change bandwagon to satisfy their government grants to keep their jobs!
Okay, the rest of the world understands most of the mechanisms that cause global warming. The US as always is digging in heels and selfishly trying to maintain and sustain its economy at the expense of the world.
Lets get to the US policies and start with science.....
Science
For over the past 200 years, the burning of fossil fuels, such as coal and oil, and deforestation have caused the concentrations of heat-trapping "greenhouse gases" to increase significantly in our atmosphere. These gases prevent heat from escaping to space, somewhat like the glass panels of a greenhouse.
Greenhouse gases are necessary to life as we know it, because they keep the planet's surface warmer than it otherwise would be. But, as the concentrations of these gases continue to increase in the atmosphere, the Earth's temperature is climbing above past levels. According to NOAA and NASA data, the Earth's average surface temperature has increased by about 1.2 to 1.4ºF in the last 100 years. The eight warmest years on record (since 1850) have all occurred since 1998, with the warmest year being 2005. Most of the warming in recent decades is very likely the result of human activities. Other aspects of the climate are also changing such as rainfall patterns, snow and ice cover, and sea level.
If greenhouse gases continue to increase, climate models predict that the average temperature at the Earth's surface could increase from 3.2 to 7.2ºF above 1990 levels by the end of this century. Scientists are certain that human activities are changing the composition of the atmosphere, and that increasing the concentration of greenhouse gases will change the planet's climate. But they are not sure by how much it will change, at what rate it will change, or what the exact effects will be. I clearly wrote that the article appeared in Newsweek Magazine in 1975. It espouses the same ignorant crap about the "UPCOMING ICE AGE" that never arrived as your present day article about "GLOBAL WARMING."
Scientists have an agenda and their claims of doom and gloom never seem to pan out.
You can choose to continue on your way picking up Al Gores droppings.

Damn, I start a thread and don't bother to post in it. Unlike alot of you computer geeks in here I don't know how to link to my sources. But my number one source is my common sense. The planet has been around for some 5 billion years and isn't going away.Temperatures have risen and fallen millions of years before man set foot on the earth. And to have the arrogance to think that in the past 20 years or so we can cause the destruction of this great planet is mind boggling. I remember in the 70's the EXACT same hysteria over a coming ice age. Weathermen can't even predict the weather a week from now. How the hell can they predict something years from now?

And of course there is the spiritual side to all of this. God created this planet and her resources, including oil!, for us to have dominion over. Christ himself said "men come and men go, but the Earth remains forever." I refuse to put the government in place of God
Remember after Katrina the global warming scammers were warning of the most violent hurricane season ever? As I recall, not a single hurricane hit the US until this year. And their predictions get more and more outrageous. Now they are saying maybe global warming won't happen but we have to do something because it MIGHT! This is junk science in it's purest form and it is beyond me how anyone could believe this crap.

Oh by the way, global temperatures FELL last year by 1 degree. (somebody help me with a link to this info. I don't know how to post it.) It took over 100 years for the temperature to rise 1 degree and one year to erase that gain.

August 15, 2008...the temperature in OKC is 81 degrees and this should be the hottest part of the summer.
The past two winters saw weeks of ice and snow. Last winter alone was one of the worst ice storms in Oklahoma history.

My area is having the coolest summer in years. I have had to use the AC less than 30 days. It has yet to reach 100 which is VERY unusual.
Mother nature is exactly that.

Summer here has been very unusual. We have had cold front after cold front pass through. It is certainly not the coolest summer I can remember but it is much cooler than usual and much cooler than it was last year.
I concur with michedkel. Climate changes over time whether we are here or not. The climate may be changing now, or it may not be, it has not been proven beyond all doubt. Although much evidence has been gathered there is a general consensus that temperatures related to climate are generally rising. But no one agrees on the cause. There is no evidence to prove that human activity has affected climate yet. There may be some proof one day but despite the loud clamoring of the few there is a heated debate among scientists about any casual effects of people on climate. If people actually do some honest research that is where it will lead them in their conclusions because that is just what the deal is.

What does this comment got to do with globel warming? This thing with the ice has been done before. Matter of fact if I am not mistaken, there have been at least 2 ice ages. Gee did we as humans cause those too?

Each Ice Age is cyclical, generally on timescales of 44,000 and 110,000 years, during which glacial ice rhythmically extends and recedes.
The precise causes of historical Ice Ages are unknown, but likely emerged due to a variety of factors, including: positions of the continents, atmospheric composition (greenhouse gases), volcanic activity, the Earth's albedo (reflectivity), variations in the Earth's distance from the Sun (Milankovitch cycles), variations in solar output, and asteroid impacts. When the right variables are in place, an Ice Age begins, and once it gets started, positive feedback effects come into play. The strongest is simply that ice is more reflective than land or forest, so large areas covered in ice sheets reflect away the Sun's rays, causing further drops in temperature and increased glaciation.

I definitely believe that the Earth will remain "forever" (as all matter does, in one form or another)...but "men come and men go" is kind sad, especially when the same source says it's going to be in 2012.  Might as well enjoy ourselves for the next 4 years and not worry about ice ages, melting ice caps, or oil.

You ever meet a Dinasour? Chrimeneee.. There is absolutely no scientific evidence that Man has had anything to do with natural global cycles... Fact is that the solar flairs have more to do with it than anything Man does... Yes solar flare activity has much to do with all the surges and down cycles of earth... No Not Man... For all of our arrogance we have not yet found a way to significantly affect nature to that point...
As for our affect on the trees and animals... well, thankfully there were fur bearing animals to help my ancestors survive so that I had the chance to take the tour... and if not for herding them cattle would have been extinct hundreds of years ago... for every species that goes extinct there are several new ones evolving... and our old planet will endure humans just like all the rest of'em and shake us off like the Dinasours when it gets tired of us... and by the way in the U.S. we have added more trees to our continent than we were taking some decades ago... look it up on a legit scientific resource instead of the pseudo science used to justify the Greenie and UN nonsense...
The two gentlemen who started Green Peace left that organization in the late 80's stating that it had become a political initiative more than a legitimate environmental issues organization. If you want me to list points and the insanity ... let's start with the New Ice Age crisis of little more than twenty years ago that was goiing to wipe mankind from the planet... on and on it goes ... the loonies screamed about the Ozone..
Want to send a Greenie or liberal nut into a coma? Just stick to facts and say...
"Isn't it wonderful how God takes care of us? Closing the Ozone hole so much over the last two decades..."
Or "Amazing how nature corrects itself! The global warming peaked in 1998 and we've been cooling down every since..."
It will send them into a frenzy. Just watch.
