ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Likely GOP presidential nominee John McCain and his running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, are traveling to Mississippi on Sunday to check on people getting prepared for Hurricane Gustav.

Their trip comes just as delegates are preparing for the Republican National Convention, which begins Monday.

Aides say McCain and his wife Cindy will join Palin in traveling to Jackson, Miss., Sunday at the invitation of Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour because of concerns about people threatened by the storm, which was heading into the Gulf of Mexico and menacing the same area ravaged by Hurricane Katrina three years ago. The storm could hit the United States as early as Monday afternoon.

This is the last word that I've heard. Now, the Mississippi region is in evacuation mode. McCain's visit means that they will have to divert much needed attention from the evacuation efforts to make sure that McCain and Palin have the proper security with all that entails. Meaning among other things, that the secret service will have to coordinate with Fema, the Governor, etc, in to make sure the Senator is safe. It means that State Trooper, that would have been assisting with the evacuation efforts would have to taken away from those efforts to protect McCain.
Senator Obama ,on the other hand, is staying away from the region so as not to cause a distraction from the evacuation efforts. That's what they were both advised to do, but McCain ignored that advise.

The storm could hit the United States as early as Monday afternoon.

The McCains and Palin will receive a briefing at the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency — a permanent operations center monitoring hurricane response.

Republicans are worried about holding their national convention during the storm.

If the storm's landfall is serious, McCain said he probably would rethink allowing the four-day political gathering to continue.

They were invited!!!! I am sure that if there was a problem with security, the Govenore of this state would not have invited them.
On the other hand, if this Hurricane hits hard, it looks like the Republican convention will either be delayed or maybe not have one at all. Kudo's for that huh?

That's a good point. I noticed that. But the question is whether he should have accepted the invitation given this is suppose to be the strongest, most deadly storm in history. I think the Governor of that state is a wacko for inviting McCain and all McCain wants to do is turn this tragic event into an opportunity for a photo op.

The weather channel is saying Cat 3 in the gulf...
postponing or cancelling convention would be smart, if this and the next 2 probables are going to hit...the fewer people in the area the better.

I was just going to post this. It's over open water now and that's usually when hurricanes increase in strength. This one seems to be weakening as we all can hope.

It's speeding over the water at 18mph, luckily it's not giving itself enough time to take advantage of that warm water...small consolation as this is going to hammer the gulf coast even as a Cat3 or 2.

Glad the residents of the gulf coast have taken this a lot more seriously than they did Katrina....and their government officials.

From this site, Gustav will increase in strength going through the warm gulf water.
Extremely Dangerous Gustav
Updated: Sunday, August 31, 2008 3:42 PM

Gustav remains a dangerous major hurricane as it travels over the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. The storm is speeding off to the northwest with the southeastern Louisiana coast as its target.

The warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico will allow Gustav to strengthen into a Category 4 hurricane by later today. The storm should maintain that intensity, with winds over 130 mph, through Monday morning.

Gustav is forecast to make landfall late Monday morning, but its effects will begin much sooner. Hurricane-force winds extend up to 50 miles away from Gustav's center, while tropical storm-force winds can be felt up to 200 miles away. Bands of torrential rain and thunderstorms are also circulating around Gustav well away from its center.

Category Three Hurricane:
Winds 111-130 mph (96-113 kt or 178-209 km/hr). Storm surge generally 9-12 ft above normal. Some structural damage to small residences and utility buildings with a minor amount of curtainwall failures. Damage to shrubbery and trees with foliage blown off trees and large trees blown down. Mobile homes and poorly constructed signs are destroyed. Low-lying escape routes are cut by rising water 3-5 hours before arrival of the center of the hurricane. Flooding near the coast destroys smaller structures with larger structures damaged by battering from floating debris. Terrain continuously lower than 5 ft above mean sea level may be flooded inland 8 miles (13 km) or more. Evacuation of low-lying residences with several blocks of the shoreline may be required. Hurricanes Jeanne and Ivan of 2004 were Category Three hurricanes when they made landfall in Florida and in Alabama, respectively.

Category Four Hurricane:
Winds 131-155 mph (114-135 kt or 210-249 km/hr). Storm surge generally 13-18 ft above normal. More extensive curtainwall failures with some complete roof structure failures on small residences. Shrubs, trees, and all signs are blown down. Complete destruction of mobile homes. Extensive damage to doors and windows. Low-lying escape routes may be cut by rising water 3-5 hours before arrival of the center of the hurricane. Major damage to lower floors of structures near the shore. Terrain lower than 10 ft above sea level may be flooded requiring massive evacuation of residential areas as far inland as 6 miles (10 km). Hurricane Charley of 2004 was a Category Four hurricane made landfall in Charlotte County, Florida with winds of 150 mph. Hurricane Dennis (pdf) of 2005 struck the island of Cuba as a Category Four hurricane.

Category Five Hurricane:
Winds greater than 155 mph (135 kt or 249 km/hr). Storm surge generally greater than 18 ft above normal. Complete roof failure on many residences and industrial buildings. Some complete building failures with small utility buildings blown over or away. All shrubs, trees, and signs blown down. Complete destruction of mobile homes. Severe and extensive window and door damage. Low-lying escape routes are cut by rising water 3-5 hours before arrival of the center of the hurricane. Major damage to lower floors of all structures located less than 15 ft above sea level and within 500 yards of the shoreline. Massive evacuation of residential areas on low ground within 5-10 miles (8-16 km) of the shoreline may be required. Only 3 Category Five Hurricanes have made landfall in the United States since records began: The Labor Day Hurricane of 1935, Hurricane Camille (1969), and Hurricane Andrew in August, 1992. The 1935 Labor Day Hurricane struck the Florida Keys with a minimum pressure of 892 mb--the lowest pressure ever observed in the United States. Hurricane Camille struck the Mississippi Gulf Coast causing a 25-foot storm surge, which inundated Pass Christian. Hurricane Katrina (pdf), a category 5 storm over the Gulf of Mexico, was still responsible for at least 81 billion dollars of property damage when it struck the U.S. Gulf Coast as a category 3. It is by far the costliest hurricane to ever strike the United States. In addition, Hurricane Wilma (pdf) of 2005 was a Category Five hurricane at peak intensity and is the strongest Atlantic tropical cyclone on record with a minimum pressure of 882 mb.

National Hurricane Center

which was the most costly and strongest in strenght are two different things ....

What's McCain going to do there ?
What's the real reason he is there ?
Why would any Governor in his right mind invite him to in with gust up to 145 mph ? Come on now. And I was repeating what Ray Nagin said this morning about the storm. He said that it was the "mother of all storms". And please let's not start with the attacks on Nagin's credibility. The topic here is whether McCain should be visiting Mississipi at a time when all the resources should be focused on dealing with the crisis at hand ?

And who says they're not going to be focusing on the crisis? Many time political figures are damned if they do and damned if they don't.

McCain gets Gustav prep briefing in Mississippi

PEARL, Miss. -- The Republicans' likely presidential nominee, Arizona Senator John McCain, and his running mate, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, are in Mississippi meeting with state officials about Hurricane Gustav.

McCain, Palin and McCain's wife, Cindy, arrived at the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency offices before noon Sunday. They were being briefed about preparations for the storm.

Their trip comes as delegates are preparing for the Republican National Convention, which begins Monday in St. Paul, Minnesota.

The McCains and Palin were invited to Mississippi by the state's Republican governor, Haley Barbour.

People in Mississippi are very worried about this storm and they are afraid because of what happened to them during Katrina, which they are still recovering from, and that Bush did not go when he was asked to during the storm.

Exactly my point. People want to see their leaders in times of crisis.

sorry, I added a sentance to my upper post. Yes, Bush was a real Jerk and was stubborn to interupt his calendar schedule to a catastrophy where people needed him most.
